Redhill perchance?

RAF Manston from a Cadet TXIII

Tiger_mate scores again. I see from Google Earth a few minor changes have taken place between photographs.

OK then - this one is slightly different:

Belfast Aldergrove?
SD |
Not Belfast.
It was Naval and is now closed. |
Is that Valkenberg in Holland?
|
Background noise: Correct.
|
As A-Floor said, it's Valkenberg. It used to have P-3's but has now closed. I'm told the locals have started a campaign to reopen it to avoid the enevitable new housing estate.
Ryanair to Amsterdam(Leiden) anyone!:rolleyes::rolleyes::rolleyes: |
Fortunately for me I've landed there. This is the last one I can lay my hands on right now:
http://i13.photobucket.com/albums/a2...haker/crop.jpg |
...and I've landed at this one:ok:
|
I guess a lot of us have - its cropped to stop it being ridiculously easy but probably still pretty well known.
|
I landed here too - on my QXC.
It was 04 / 22 with 14 / 32 then. They've even got an ILS now! SD |
It would seem we are in need of a review of the fundamentals of posting a 'Challenge' photo. Many folks are willing to identify the aerodrome, but they won't stick around to post a challenge, perhaps because they are reluctant to monitor the replies. A gentle reminder to all, please try to post an older photo of an aerodrome that is still extant. Remember, this is 'Aviation History and Nostalgia'.
..and remember, if you think you have a correct answer, have a photo ready to post. Check this forum to learn how to post photos. Regards, from a guy who has done plenty.. |
Why art thou folkes being so coy about this aerodrome?
I have a couple of old photos to post if you have none. Now off to the county dump / tip. Will return within two hours. seacue |
Okay Seacue.... It's Lydd. You have the floor.
|
Next challenge. Today this is a very major commercial airport.
Pardons for being 20 minutes late from my estimated two-hour excursion. http://users.erols.com/rcarpen/airp589.jpg http://users.erols.com/rcarpen/airp592.jpg |
First hint:
There is a major motorway alongside the railway line from the center left to upper right. It lies between the railway and the hangars which are on the aerodrome - yet I can't find the hangars in the present Google Earth image. The hangars were still there when I drove past maybe 20 years ago. [Sounds a little like my instruction to "Turn left where the E J Korvetes store used to be".] |
Boston Logan?
|
Not Logan. Correct continent, correct coast.
Maybe it's easier that I thought |
Blimey!!! I'll admit, the gate gave me the continent.
Newark Liberty? |
GASP!! The Baron hit it in two. Newark is was. It really was easier than I thought. Once one got the continent and coast correct, there were relatively few possibilities.
How did the gate give you the continent? The 1933 caption says the American Airways Ford was part of a once-an-hour service to Washington, DC. That would have been to the old Washington airport where part of the Pentagon lies today. ThreadBaron, you have control. |
Less of the 'GASP!!', please. I'll do that myself.:\
How continent? Greeters/Farewellers, or even travellers, outside, airside at gate that says 'Gate ....'. I've watched too many films, I know. Now this is easy! http://i10.photobucket.com/albums/a1...ron/AeroD7.jpg and from 1969. http://i10.photobucket.com/albums/a1...n/AeroD10A.jpg By the way, who else does as I do? That is click on 'Properties' ... j u s t in case?:p |
Simply to bring the thread back to the top,
" Anyone there?" |
ThreadBaron's challenge
KBFI Boeing Field/King County International Airport.
|
And you didn't need the mountain in the background! You have control bri.
I was lonely for a while.. 21 hrs 59 min |
Thanks Baron. Several of my colleagues go to BFI for sim-training. This next one should be easy:

evansb's challenge
Broward County International Airport later renamed Fort Lauderdale Hollywood International Airport perhaps.
|
The parking area in the background looks very like Santos Dumont in Rio (SBRJ).
If it is then the floor is open as I shall be away for the next few days. |
Flap40 is correct.:ok: It is Santos Dumont in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. As he mentioned, the floor is open.
|
Picture from 1950.
http://i10.photobucket.com/albums/a1...on/AeroD11.jpg Although the buildings do not remain, the positions of some are still identifiable on the ground today via Google Earth. The airfield is active today. |
ThreadBaron's challenge
R.A.F. Changi Singapore.
|
Mine are just too easy it seems.:bored:
Correct! Here's the matching Google Earth image to compare. And there are the old building footprints. http://i10.photobucket.com/albums/a1...hangiToday.jpg All yours Bri. |
Thanks Baron. Here is an easy one.

Dunno where it is...Winnipeg? but I've flown the DC-3 in the middle (CF-TDT).:8

Sorry, not Winnipeg.
