That photograph of "P" Peter is fantastic Warmtoast and one that I would like to use on my desktop.

Check your PM's |
sycamore, yes, it is indeed Merryfield!
Dec 31st 2007! |
I think that may well have been derived from the earlier collateral you presented some weeks ago Beags
|
Beags favourite haunt `when `e were a lad` ? Open House ...
|
|
Easy peasy.
That would be RAF Beyond the Back of Beyond. A popular hangout for those denied the pleasure of MPA. Somewhere in Malaysia? BTW the Tprop when my turn comes you will pay for this ;);) |
hint #1: There is a P38 in the water just off the end of the runway.
No, not Malaysia. |
Seghe Field, Solomon Islands.
|
Spot on! I thought this one would be hard.
Over to you. |
Hi tprop - it was hard! I was lucky. When I saw the photo and 'not Malaysia' I took a wild guess at Guadalcanal/Solomon Islands. Then it was only a matter of time on Google. This photo did it...
http://home.st.net.au/%7Edunn/airfields/si54.jpg I'll have to dig out a photo and get back to you. Bear with me a while... |
Here's a piece of Seghe trivia: When Air Sols doesn't have a flight - which is most of the time - the field doubles a soccer/football pitch.
|
Blimey - I wouldn't fancy playing midfield much - a lot of ground to cover!
OK - on to the next challenge. Sorry it is a bit home-made... http://i282.photobucket.com/albums/k.../airfield1.jpg |
What the airfield is home made?? Looks like a place in Holland I saw once from an airliner; never did identify it.
|
Ho ho! Yes, we have a big back garden!! What I meant was it is not a camera photograph. It's a Google Earth 'still' - as you can probably tell.
And no - not Holland. I will hazard a guess that you were possibly looking at Deelen? |
Time for a clue?
It is east of Holland. Northern hemisphere... I thought the hard-standing patterns might give away the nationality. |
I thought either Polish, who have a plethora of single strip airfields or East German, again influenced by their Moscovite association.
|
You're heading in the right direction...
|
This is one of my favourite threads - been away for 2wks - coming back to catch up on recent postings has had me in absolute stitches!!! :O ;) I havn't laughed so much in ages - thank you chaps!! The exasperated post of JW411 was priceless - 'shambles'!!!! It reads like a comedy script - hope we have another soon......................;) :ok: Anyway, back to the mysterious eastern european military drome..................
|
Don't tell Ryanair about this thread or they'll probably start flights to airports even more obscure than Hahn-Mosel once the location of the old East European highway strips is revealed....
|
OK - Keep going east... :ok:
|
Helluva displacement on the thresholds just like Elvington was.
|
Another clue:
You will notice the QRA-style standings are all at one end, i.e. launch would be towards the 'camera' end. The clue is that this end points East (ish), not West... |
Sorry to be obtuse bur you're saying the QR aircraft take off heading East, right?
|
Yes - that is correct.
|
Perceived threat from east so if Russian, perhaps siberia nr coast opposite Alaska ........?
|
Not wishing to hijack the thread, but having looked at `google` as far as Vladivostok, and not found it, for those spotters interested, there are a couple of interesting Mil airfields just N of Vldk,at Artem, with loads of Migs/Sukhois?An/Tu etc;however ,at a place called Galenki about 60 miles N of Vdvk, on the western taxiway is a small jet, appears to have almost delta wing shape, with a straight tailplane, and tandem cockpit;possibly looks like the Mig/MBtrainer,or....and why are the runway numbers the same at both ends ??,or 180 out?Send a PM if you don`t want to clutter the thread...
|
not same, 02 and 20
|
We're getting pretty warm...
By the way - sycamore is right - the runway IDs are 'upside down' at Galenki. 02 is the south-facing threshold, and 20 is north facing. That can't be right. Good spot!! Anyway, the mystery 'drome is not Galenki, so keep going! |
Any further clues to stop this hunt dying?
Russia or China? |
Russia. North east.
In the interests of keeping everyone happy, I will administer the coup-de-grace (i.e. the give-away) this afternoon if no takers... |
OK - final clue:
Kamchatka peninsula. Interceptor airfield for local-ish missile test range. Answer later tonight if no takers... |
Ukinskly or Palana?
|
Klyuchi air base, in Kamchatka Krai.
|
Thanks, Brian - spot on!
For a moment there I feared you had all given up. Was it too hard, or just uninteresting? |
This aerodrome has a bit of history and is a bit nostalgic:
http://i141.photobucket.com/albums/r.../WAD091018.jpg |
Dunno about you lot, but very interesting scanning Russian and Chinese airfields; several with over 50 SU 27/Mig29,Su24,An124,hordes of helos,Russian Dak,Mig19, 3 `nuc.subs(>400ft long),and 3 Lightnings(in Kuwait)...Oh,and a couple of Backfires,..no Bears though..
|
Sorry, not in Cumbria.
|
I wonder if this is outside the UK? I first thought of Lossie/Kinloss area given the coastline, but it doesn't look as agricultural and populated as the UK usually does.
Looks as if the aerodrome might be in the process of being dismantled - a lack of buildings, and plant working along the far runway. Abandoned after WW2? It's the classic 3 runways pattern. The b+w photo might be 1950-60's vintage, any later more likely to be colour. Is that the line of perhaps an original grass strip at the upper left? A road and possibly a settlement towards the sea. The near landscape looks to be vegetated sand dunes so maybe not the channel coast, which is usually shingle. Is that a VOR below the intersection? Off to google earth.... |
Is it Pembrey?
