evansb's challenge

Portlaoise is correct:ok: It is Wellington Airport, New Zealand.

Portlaoise 21st Aug 2007 15:51

Thanks EvansB and East Mids is correct. Thought afterwards it was a little on the easy side. Next time I get one I will make sure I have the international airport of mongolia or something.:D

ThreadBaron 21st Aug 2007 18:14

'tas been quiet for a couple of hours now, so 'Open House' is assumed. This is hard.

Right well Manfred I can't figure it out at the moment except that my instinct suggests that it is probably mid-western US, dry-lake field and has perhaps appeared in a video for the corrs (just kidding) or has at least some connection with something historic in aviation. There are no aircraft that I can see, the surfaced runway tapers (starter extension) and there are clearly two other runways at the classic 60 degrees from each other. I have searched http://www.airfields-freeman.com/ as it has plenty of airfields of similar type but nothing seems to resemble it.

For the sake of a hint could you answer one of the following:

Is there a larger airfield today or is it more or less the same?
Is it famous or was it once famous (I thought at one point something like Longreach perhaps)
Could you show another image of it or perhaps (being cheeky now) a photo clue e.g. an aircraft that would be typical of the field then and now.

I shall continue the search off and on anyway in the meantime.

Churchill MB (YYQ). :p

ThreadBaron 22nd Aug 2007 07:16

Correct continent Portlaiose, butnot quite Midwest.

Started as 80 acres, but another 400 acres added later. The local rag ran a competition to name the airport, offering a prize of $35!! Its first name was not one of the competition entries. The name has changed twice since then, in 1960 and 1972.

Its is small but has quite an interesting history.

Portlaoise 22nd Aug 2007 08:16

Aerodrome

Well those dates were in fact too much information as this led to me finding the website with the photo concerned. It is Bert Mooney airport in Butte and it indeed had several interesting events including a visit from Lindbergh and was a destination for America's oldest airline Western Airlines. I will post a new photo in a few minutes.

Portlaoise 22nd Aug 2007 08:29

Mystery Aerodrome

Ok well here is the new challenge. This airfield plays a significant role today but is not a major airport.

Edited so as not to be telling lies: Today it is a regional airport.

Portlaoise's challenge

Tulsa, Oklahoma?

Portlaoise 22nd Aug 2007 21:20

mystery aerodrome

Sorry EvansB not Tulsa but not too bad a guess. It is within 1000km of Tulsa. I will post another couple of pictures.

http://img204.imageshack.us/img204/2553/untitledws0.png
This view was taken shortly after WWII

http://img441.imageshack.us/img441/9...showxy1.th.jpg

This is an older photo taken during the 30s while an airshow was taking place. The airfield underwent some fairly rapid expansion then in the 50s and was renamed after a local pilot who once owned the field in the 70s. If people are still stumped tomorrow I will post a photo shortly after it expanded in the 50s.

Portlaoise 23rd Aug 2007 12:44

Another Hint

Well since it is all quiet at the moment perhaps this will move things on a bit.

http://img444.imageshack.us/img444/6...portcr9.th.jpg

Another hint is it hosts a major aviation show today.

pigboat 23rd Aug 2007 12:57

Whitman Field, OSH?

Portlaoise 23rd Aug 2007 13:09

Yes you are correct pigboat.:ok: Wittman field (home of airventure - oshkosh the largest general aviation event in the world) It is also home to the EAA Museum and a more modern picture of it can be found here. You have control

Err, no. Giving the identity of the airfield when posting the picture sort of defeats the err, challenge aspect.

but if you really need a challenge...well coming soon..!!

Please read the originating post for the thread first. ;)

Tiger_mate 23rd Aug 2007 22:37

Paddyboys challenge is British Military / ex RAF Bomber base / almost certainly used as either fighter or trainer base during 60/70s. Not developed enough to be a modern mil base despite looking operational. Therefore nowadays disused/GA or Army Air Corps helicopter base. Which one? Not a scooby, but very similar to Linton-on-Ouse, but will try Watton

Edit: RAF West Raynham

Spot on Tiger_mate.

Unfortunatley they've started removing the runways. Another sad end to a very historic site.

Tiger_mate 24th Aug 2007 06:36

I enjoyed that challenge, especially when I thought thatall 'expansion period' airfields shared a common layout only to find that West Raynham was the exception to the rule. Anyone know if my WWII Bomber > 60s Fighter-Trainer theory was correct?

Tiger_mate 24th Aug 2007 09:04

At a risk of thread drift, almost every town of any size in Germany has an airfield be it powered or a glider field. Thus aviation is a major part of german culture. Why mention this? ...because the UK is not overwhelmed with airfield assets and even if limited to weekends, this airfield could have served the recreation flying community.

Especially as rural airfields do not suffer with noise complaints in the way urban ones do. The more flying clubs there are, the less of a monopoly for the clubs, the cheaper it is the learn to fly, especially if the overheads are low.

Tiger_mate 24th Aug 2007 16:22

What Aerodrome...

Seems to me to be, Marathon in the Florida Keys.

If right the floor is open.

Tiger_mate 24th Aug 2007 19:52

The floor is not open, because nobody is anywhere near, well ish as in within 1000 miles I suppose.

Postcard, we had an 'open floor' for 10 hours at which time you could have jumped in. Running more than 1 is to say the least, confusing.

Fellers, you are on the right lines, so I will give 'tomorrows clue' early. The most exclusive airline in the world is Tiger Taxi's, although there are many that would say that 'Loyalty' counts for more. Like I said: Tiger Mate has been there and done it.

If you really want to scrape the barrel, this is a clue as to the 'airline'.

but possibly not the country.

How about San Pedro on Ambergris Cay Belize? This would have been that exclusive airline perhaps!
http://i25.photobucket.com/albums/c6...craft/puma.jpg

Tiger_mate 25th Aug 2007 05:18

Doh, I forgot Mel was about...........

1563 Flight, The most exclusive airline in the world.

Belize Intl > San Pedro R&R shuttle for Army/RAF & MOD civilians based in Belize, by RAF Puma helicopter.

The crews were made up (on 2 month rotation) from 230 (Tiger) Sqn, and 33 (Loyalty) Sqn, and the badge which Mel has shown is based upon the local Fir-de-Lance snake, a partiiculary nasty, and unusually territorial snake.

To miss the shuttle was to pay for 'white knuckle airlines' instead, and I will keep 'liable' off Pprune, buthasten to say that there is a story there.

Next Challenge

Thanks Tiger_mate. Those were the days, I remember the Customs Inspectors at Belize International Airport in the 1980 still used to mark one's case with a chalked cross to show it had been checked. Once flew in a TACA BAC111 to Miami and asked for a Scotch and the hostess brought a bottle and glass from the trolley and it was a case of "Say when"
I am sure this will not last long.

seacue 26th Aug 2007 11:50
