OK maybe I DO have a challenge - rather hard I think. Pics taken 55 years ago.

seacue's challenge
Second photograph, is that a tail-fin from a B24 Liberator?
|
No, Mel, from a B-25, taken by me in an earlier life.
|
I was guessing at a B24 too, no idea of the field...
Somewhere in Canada? |
Not Canada. It's in the USA, New England state.
|
seacue's challenge
Westover Air Force Base, MA perhaps?
|
Mel, You are much closer. Right state. Mixed civilian / military now, I think. Certainly at least partly civilian these days.
|
seacue's challenge
Laurence G Hanscom Field Bedford-Hanscom MA perhaps?
|
Bingo! Mel has it. KBED it is. My ultimate hint would have been "The British are coming!" since KBED is between Lexington and Concord, close to the route Paul Revere took some years ago. The towns of Lincoln and the namesake Bedford are also close.
The floor is Mel's. |
Next Challenge
Thanks seacue, did you fly the Mitchell B25 from there or from some other location?
I am sure this one will not be a problem. http://i25.photobucket.com/albums/c6...ortquiz011.jpg Mel |
Mel, I was a passenger. I was assigned to the USAF Cambridge Research Center and we had the B25 on our project. The plane was based at Bedford.
My assignment to AFCRC was a wonderful experience for a new BS in EE and 2nd Lt since I didn't expect to make the service my career. My direct boss was one of "our" Germans who later became Comsat's VP of Engineering. seacue |
Mel's Challenge
No takers, this one is not that far from seacue's last "which airport".
Mel |
Mel,
Read your PM. I won't reveal the answer, thus others can participate in your challenge. BTW, there is a very good image of the field on Google Earth. seacue |
Mel's Challenge
Seacue
That is the one. Mel |
No Other Players
No other players so I will reveal all.
Mel's challenge is KBDL, Bradley International serving Hartford and Springfield. Since Mel tells me I am correct, here is the next challenge, rather wetter than most: http://users.erols.com/rcarpen/239B0233.JPG |
Foynes seaplane base?
|
Foynes was my immediate thought, but then it looks a little too warm for Ireland?
|
Looks a little too warm for Botwood also. :)
|
Not the seaplane bases guessed so far.
You are not close. |
The Azores someplace?
If that's correct, open the floor. I'm going beddy-bye. |
Not the Azores. Harbour borders the same ocean.
Beddy-bye calls me too. |
Lake Maracaibo?
|
Possibly Darrel's Island 1937; Hamilton Harbour? The aircraft possibly the Short Empire C Class G ADDU and the Clipper S42 NC 16735. The lady with her hand on her hip was Mary Bentwhistle and the ketch in the background Yknot I. Occasion: the inauguation Imperial's and Pan Am's flights to/from New York.
|
Sorry for the delay. I'm on GMT-4 time so it's only 6:30AM here.
larssnowpharter has the answer and a lot more info. The floor is his. My source says PanAm "Bermuda Clipper" and Imperial Airways "Cavalier". |
Thank you Seacue. I recall reading that the S42 was shipped either to NY or Hamilton in crates and that it was its first trip to the Atlantic.
Here is your next challenge: http://i163.photobucket.com/albums/t...tairfield1.jpg |
RAF Takali, Malta, where Canada's leading World War II ace George 'Buzz' Beurling was based. The airfield was one of the most heavily bombed Allied bases during World War II.
|
you have it in one, Sir!:D Well done. :ok: It is RAF Ta Kali (or Ta' Qali - the 'Q' is supposed to be silent) As you rightly point out it was one of the most heavily bombed pieces of real estate in the World. The last time I saw it, it was being used for motor racing.
You have control. |
|
It is a shame that the image is not a little better, for this one interests me. It would appear to be a Pan-Am DC4 taxi-ing out with an Avro York and another unidentified 4 prop at dispersal in a country that would not obviously support the need for such airliners. This and the tropical-colonial appearance of the buildings make me believe that it is a Commonwealth country used as a refuel stopover, and probably an Atlantic or Pacific Island.
Am I anywhere near? |
evansb's challenge
It is indeed a Pacific Ocean locale.
|
Could it be Whenuapai?
|
Sorry Lars, not in New Zealand.
|
Honolulu...?
|
Sorry, not Honolulu.
|
Perhaps it is Guam? Mountains look familiar in any case.
|
Sorry, not Guam.
|
Time for a WAG. Port Moresby PNG. :p
|
Not Port Morseby, but you are getting closer. i.e. PNG is closer than Guam. The Avro York on the tarmac is a good clue.
|
Somewhere in Queensland?
|
Australia - thats an island isnt it?
