Tiger Airways has flagged establishing a new Australian base for aircraft and crew, as the low-cost carrier expands its operations.

Tiger Airways group chief executive Tony Davis said the airline would "inevitably" base airplanes and crews beyond its current base of Adelaide and Melbourne's Tullamarine and Avalon airports.

"We are talking to airports and state governments right now with a view to announcing some more bases in the coming year," Mr Davis said from Singapore during a conference call on Wednesday.

The Singapore-headquartered Tiger began flying in Australia in November 2007 from bases at Tullamarine Airport and Adelaide.

It was due to begin operations from Melbourne's Avalon Airport later this month, where two aircraft will be based.

It announced recently that Brisbane-Sydney flights would start in February next year.

Mr Davis said Tiger's policy was for its crews and aircraft to return to their home base at the end of each day in a bid to reduce costs.

The airline will have 12 aircraft flying in Australia by the end of fiscal 2011.

Tiger recorded a net profit of $S16 million ($A12.5 million) in the six months to September 30, as revenue growth outpaced increases in passenger volumes.

The result was a turnaround from a $S8.3 million loss in the prior corresponding period, Tiger said on Tuesday.

Revenue for the half rose 39.4 per cent to $S229.8 million, of which roughly a quarter was from ancillary revenue, or fees paid for items such as checking in bags, seat selection or food on board.

Mr Davis said the airline was always looking for ways of increasing ancillary revenue to somewhere closer to 35 per cent of total revenue.

Asked what further initiatives could be introduced in a bid to increase ancillary revenue, Mr Davis said: "The honest answer is I don't know, but we are not going to stop looking."

Tiger ranks fifth among all airlines in terms of the percentage of revenue derived from ancillary services.

Mr Davis said forward bookings were strong for the peak travel period between December and February.

Tiger said it was focused on "ramping up services on existing routes as well as introducing new routes, in particular to Greater China and India from Singapore, and domestically in Australia".

Mr Davis also reiterated the airline's desire for rules to be changed to allow Tiger to begin international operations from Australia, particularly to New Zealand.

He said adding Tiger to the sector would help mitigate any competition issues in relation to the proposed alliance between Virgin Blue and Air New Zealand on trans-Tasman routes, adding that it was "absolutely nonsensical" that Tiger is currently excluded.
Hope it lasts longer than the Adelaide base.

Bases with LCC's should be considered temporary. They open and close them like I change underwear.

Then all the hopefuls are disappointed when one shuts. Helloooo they have all those clauses in your individual working contract (I won't call it an EBA) for a reason.

Adding to that Mr Hat. The reason they are so shortsighted with bases is mainly due to the incompetence of the people running these LCCs.

When the various financial incentives thrown at them to get them in, start running out, these managers do the only thing they know best and that is run away from their f@*k ups and blame someone else.

The incompetence of these guys is taking management ideology to lows we have never seen before.

(SINGAPORE) Tiger Airways Singapore would neither confirm nor deny talk yesterday that its managing director Rosalynn Tay had quit.

Sources close to the company told The Business Times that Ms Tay had tendered her resignation. But Tiger Holdings chief executive Tony Davis said she was still at her post. 'She's still the MD,' he said. 'If there is something to comment on, we will announce it.'

Asked again specifically if she had resigned, Mr Davis would only repeat 'She's still the MD.'

There have been recent management changes at Tiger. Several people have been hired from Britain's BMI group, where Mr Davis came from. Some have been elevated to senior posts.

Dave Perring was promoted to commercial director not long ago. And operations director Daniel Wong is said to be making way for two incoming managers.

Meanwhile, Mike Coltman, Tiger's former operations director from Australia, has moved north to oversee the establishment of Tiger's Thai unit with Thai Airways.

And former pilot Christopher Ward has been lured back to Tiger to head a partnership with Philippines- based SeaAir.

'Many of the local staff, especially at management level, are upset,' said a source.

BT understands that unhappiness boiled over several months ago when Tiger suffered an exodus of pilots following a wage dispute. This affected services, forcing Tiger to cancel up to a third of its flights during some weeks in September and October.

The airline insisted it had enough pilots to meet its needs and said it had recruited new pilots from regional carriers.

But passengers complained bitterly about cancelled flights. 'There was a lot of finger-pointing during that time,' a source said.

Tiger's arch-rival AirAsia started taking potshots at the Singapore Airlines associate, with its outspoken CEO Tony Fernandes calling the Tiger team a 'bunch of white guys' who didn't understand the Asian budget carrier market.

Some within the company say Mr Davis is purely bottomline-focused and cost-driven. 'He is the emperor here and he makes all the key decisions,' said a source. 'But the frustration is growing.'

Ms Tay joined Tiger five years ago as its head of marketing and was promoted to managing director of Tiger Singapore after the budget carrier set up an Australian sister airline almost two years ago.

From abc news:

Vanessa Regan from Tiger Airways says there was not enough demand for the flights.
But she says Tiger is not pulling out of Darwin completely.
"This is kind of common business practice for all airlines at the moment," she said.
"I think you'll find a number of airlines are adapting their schedule for that period."
Ms Regan says all passengers who made bookings during the affected period will be offered a full refund.
She says she hopes Territorians will understand Tiger's decision.
"It is a commercial reality that we do operate on the most profitable routes.
"So we don't go into a market with the intention to pull out and suspend.
"We want to continue, we want to ramp up services.
"So, it is based on demand, we have to have full planes to continue to offer such low fares."
Tiger Airways pulled out of Darwin in October 2008 and only returned in June.
Meanwhile, Jetstar has launched a new service between Darwin and the Philippines.
Flights to Manilla will begin in February next year.

2) If the above is true, how the HELL does that fly with immigration, with plenty of qualified Aussies available ( inc people inside Tiger Oz )

Affirm but I take it they were set straight by CASA i.e the CP actually needs to be qualified (type rating, check and training/flight examiner) and therefore, obviously experienced on type.

Oh and it wasn't "management" it was the managing director saving one of his friends from the sinking ship that is BMI baby.

Got a feeling there will be plenty more of that happening. :hmm:

Over at Cobahm the CP doesn't have 1 jet hour, he has spent some time on Dash 8's is all, or so I understand. Any Cobham pilots like to comment?

Anyone who thought the previous MD of TT was a little behind the ball will be amazed at the level of apparent incompetence of the imports.
This is a company that believes that endless disdain towards its staff and its customers is ok. That type of attitude went out with the ark.
This is a seriously under resourced and under equipped outfit in need of a kick in the goolies by the regulator.

They constantly have people applying and have built up a bit of a holding pool from what i've been told.. With a couple of new aircraft coming at the start of the year, upgrades and (surely) more aircraft later in the year they will be looking for plenty of F/O's..
