Are internals going to be left out in the wind and on the back burner? Like QF?

JQ will have to maintain continued direct entry recruitment and get ahead of it before other airlines start recruitment, JQ are very short and are crewing a lot of services off WDO or asking crew to come in outside of reserve or RAS. The cadet program won’t suffice due to time from zero to checked to line. I suspect the same short staffed issues would be in HR also, it may take time to let you know. As they say, no news is good news.

Upside,

I wouldnt think so. With the critically low numbers of crew currently I think everyone will get a gig.

MCD.

Biggest constraint at the moment is training capacity, new FO's are having to go to Singapore for simulator training as the simulators in Australia are at capacity.

Anyone have any idea of how many are on the hold file? I've been on since pre-covid and haven't heard anything yet.

Interviews have been going for a couple of months. Not sure about start dates though.

Anyone know if there are any restrictions on interviewing with more than one company within the QF group? Are they allowing it this year?

It is only possible to facilitate one interview at a time. Other applications are put on hold until the outcome of the interview.

Unsure about the 12 month stand down. May only apply to the online testing step as that counts for each entity.

I know of 3 people that have interviewed in the last few weeks.

With expansion and people moving over to mainline, it should be a good time to get in and possibly get a quick(er) command.

Quick command is now 10+yrs in the most junior base at JQ, depending on what becomes of the 78 the added neo could bring this in over the next 4 or so yrs. If the 78 goes as is the rumor then you will be looking at the same 10+.

The 787s are making money, why get rid of them?

I also think it's a bit premature to put a number on time to command, given expansion and pilots leaving.

the 78 isn’t going anywhere anytime soon, the more relevant rumour is the expansion of the 78 fleet on the back of QF 350 deliveries, not to mention the infrastructure purchased in a specific European nation for Jetstar, the crew rest pods to be retrofitted into the 78-8 that are sitting in Melbourne hangar - but like anything in aviation, until you see it, don’t believe it.

just for prospective with people who are asking about starts - the current people who are on their type rating have been on the hold for 4 years, obviously Covid was the main issue, however 2 people per type rating course and large hold will cause delays for starts unless they can find more sim slots.

Thank you very much for the insight! Are you able to expand a little more on the European thing? Also any word on what time period a command is worth these days?

Based on conversion"s I've had the days of quick upgrades at JQ are over. 5-6+ years for 78 FO and 9-10+ years for 320 command. You'd probably be in a pine box before a 787 command comes Up. The big unknown question is how the LR and XLR impacts the 787. It's either dead as many believe, (XLR can do everything apart from HNL) or perhaps it's not. It may even be expanded with QF 787s or a new type all together. Who knows. Always thought they'd fill a 78 to Vegas, Athens or India but the brain's trust paid extra to remove the crew rest

The 787s will be around for the remainder of this decade unless they can get a buyer, which considering age, configuration, no crew rest, will be a very hard task. Don’t forget this was already attempted prior pandemic, nothing eventuated. They are not overly economical on the domestic triangle when compared to the A332. Sort of stuck with them for the moment, plenty of pent up demand in the coming years to push them to longer haul new routes.

Commands will be delayed across many places for the first half of this decade, Virgin also impacted on that front with some FOs who might reach retirement before the offer arrives, or only get a few years in the golden seat.

The likes of 2-4 year commands probably won’t arrive until the back end of this decade. Looking at numbers, retirements, expected global growth later this decade, it will be a challenge entering the 2030s as we are today. Those who are getting first GA jobs in the coming years will have good careers with no shortage of options by the time they reach the big turbine stuff. Those ‘in’ at the moment, will just need to be patient sadly.

Cool

The 787 will remain with JQ in some form. Dash 8 or Dash 9.

With 54+ type ratings underway and continued recruitment onto the 787 you would have to wonder about the naysayers street cred.

As for the XLR 320s. Same wing, heavier load. Forget about the MORAs on the current PNG escape routes. For the XLR its simply not achievable.

60 min wx reqs in most destinations outside AUS will be a stretch. Looks great for the bean counters but thats where it stops.

Two isles is where its at.

MCD
