78 FO is 170 (give or take) spots from the bottom of the list, and not so many spots above that is the most junior captain, I think you’re timelines a little out but shave a few years off each and you would probably be on the money.

with 46 ish new frames “penciled” in for the passionately orange team, and not so many moving to network, the sheer pilot numbers required is staggering, they will be understaffed for years to come. I can’t see the 2 year commands ever coming back and nor should anyone want that, 3-4 is definitely possible with where this company is going.

With maxed out Bali bogan bullets happening daily from every major port and a guy full of freight on those 78’s, those leprechauns are ******* jealous little bastards with the amount of money old AJ is printing off them. As long as they can keep them flying and not racing into stationary hangers. 🤣🤣

Exactly, as stated above.

there maybe close to 46 aircraft coming and there’s a lot that’s being moved through to network and EFA, there’s still a more staying around than not.

Generally get a pause on those things when a business cycles out a CEO. Then another 6 months while the next CEO ‘listens and learns’ or what I heard the other day ‘deep dives’ into the teams feedback. By the time all those shenanigans take place, it’s 2024.

As much as they would love to freeze remuneration forever and ever, how long can it drag on? 2024 seems likely when looking ahead. My wife has had 6 pay increases since I got my last one.

The roadshow I went to in 2016 had FO basic at $97k and CP basic at $185k. Sector pay on top of that circa 10-15k pa. Obviously things may have improved since then 👍🏼

Hi all,

Interested to know thought processes for choosing between JQ and VA? i.e. base options, time to command, conditions, ties to Qantas group - ease of transferring to mainline from JQ, vs being an external hire if I chose VA.

What would you all consider?

Thanks in advanced!

Many positives and negatives for both. Do you want to live in the city or regional. Jetstar if you want the option with regional bases.

Virgin will be cut up again later this decade so the future is as unknown as it is today.

Forget about transferring to mainline, and command upgrades at both are probably 10 years, pending what happens with the mix later this decade. A whole lot of growth at Virgin mid this decade, which should push the commands along if the foreign players start throwing cash around. However, is many Virgin FOs waiting, and waiting, so would still take considerable time.

Management at both carry the same blood type.

From October 1 this year,

- $107k base, once ZQN Qualified $110k
- 2% pay rise October 2023
- $145 per hour overtime for every hour flown over 65 hours
- $5.05 per duty hour for sign on at home base to sign off at home base
- NO overnight allowances over and above the $5.05
- 4.5% Company contribution into KiwiSaver if Pilot contributes

That is the basics.

Good question. As someone who is still on the hold file, I am considering the exact same thing.

Why bother with an airline? If your on the hold file you’ll get your chance to fly the Shiney jet eventually.

RFDS for a few years will pay much better then any regional airline and is a very rewarding job.

Because what everyone wants out of life is different. Not everyone wants to work overnights in the middle of nowhere, regardless of whether the pay is good.

Any idea on how many NZ positions they are looking for or is it just expressions of interest?

What seems to be the current wait between being advised you're on hold and receiving your start date, and how far in advanced are people actually receiving their start dates? I received an email two weeks ago advising I'm on hold.

And thanks PoppaJo for your thoughts
