Would not say the government has come to their aid at all. There are not putting any money into the airline. Just yesterday they remortgaged a Dash to a German Bank for 5 million pounds to help their cash flow to help them get through the winter. Cannot keep selling the family silver.

"An agreement has been reached between Flybe , Heathrow and the government"

A statement from the Government on the announcement.

It is a PSO route so in that respect of course it is supported by the Government, The Government can barely support itself at the moment and I suspect this is ministerial speak to gain a few brownie points.

I admire your optimism Brigantee!

Given the wording of the poster I was querying, I’d assumed it was another piece of news with regards to the Govt bailing out Flybe, not just about agreeing to a regional route.

So, as far as I can see the government is hardly coming to the aid of Flybe as implied would happen by a few posters.

Yes. I think Flybe will find this is as close to help as it will get from the Gov.

Some decent utilisation rates on that Newquay Heathrow service, good news and goood effort by Flybe on this one

There's a difference between Flybe surviving and Flybe surviving because the Government intervenes and saves them. Given other companies and industries which have gone under - like Monarch, I doubt the Gov is going to intervene and help Flybe and so far have seen nothing to say otherwise.

Being projected that each passenger round trip NQY/LHR/NQY will cost the UK taxpayer £10.

SEN are still hoping for their own service from NQY,if it now happens why is it expected to be self supporting & cash generating when ops into one of the World`s premier airports evidently is not.

Many regional airports around the UK are looking askance at this BEE/LHR/CG cobble up after their own services have been withdrawn or reduced.

BEE & CG & to a lessor extent LHR are all at sea...

You're comparing apples and oranges - Southend doesn't have the worldwide connections that LHR has, and it is that access that is being paid for by the PSO. If other regional airlines are looking askance, it's because they haven't done as good a job as NQY and Cornwall Council

True Blue 22nd Nov 2018 15:31

How would moving 1 route save them? Surely this is just peanuts in terms the whole operation?

southside bobby 22nd Nov 2018 16:07

Whatever happened to poetic license?...Yes I do actually comprehend all the fundamentals involved but use license to draw attention to the two main parties involved both BEE & CG who do not inspire confidence & who both have clarity of vision deficit.
Tory seats in the West Country anyone with possible elections threatening.

It's no different than Inverness not having APD on it's flights. Cornwall isn't easy to get to and the PSO is an investment in the area.

Slight difference is that INV has 4 trains a day and they are more than likely to go tech due to landslides etc.

Anyone think any airline is going to touch the with TUPE etc then they are sadly mistaken. Government sub not going to happen either due to being highly illegal.

Honestly flybe's management are utter heads up their own arse by buying the setup and AoC your taking on all the redundancy payments and more importantly all the baggage and useless management. Operating crew and gingers no an issue with the rest of the dead wood nobody will touch.

EastMids 22nd Nov 2018 17:21

So what we have with the transfer of the route to Heathrow is:

* The existing PSO subsidy was about to run out and has been renewed. That's the government involvement explained.
* Heathrow offers £15 / pax discount on handling charges for new UK routes. That's Heathrow's involvement explained.
* Flybe was able to obtain remedy slots at LHR from the IAG/bmi takeover. That's the airline's involvement explained.

I really can't see anything more substantive for the airline than this - other than that it might be able to sell its existing slots at LGW.

Inverness has far more than 4 trains per day - unless you are talking about connections to London, which is a peak of the Highland Chieftain and Caledonian Sleeper once a day in each direction on top of the peak air links of 8 A320 flights to London each day. There is also many opportunities to connect in Edinburgh to London services. Also landslides are only really common on the Far North Line and are rare on the Highland Mainline.

Virgin & Flybe:

https://news.sky.com/story/virgin-at...flybe-11560548

BA318 22nd Nov 2018 17:40

Sky News are reporting Virgin Atlantic are in talks to buy Flybe.

tescoapp 22nd Nov 2018 17:49

i was born north of Dundee and connections to London other than Air are utterly pants. Sleeper is a nice option though which i do pay the extra for on occasion.

Virgin trains I might understand an interest in the operation.... but then again they have similar issues as flybe….

Atlantic more than likely operates with a couple of ops controllers one tech guy 24H to take on the flybe fleet would blow the ops model out the water. Can't see it myself...
