Problem with FlyBe is that it is largely a domestic airline. Domestic flying is basically 'x' to London and FlyBe aren't really big at that because the big boys do it better.
So you're left with secondary or tertiary routes - many of which are barely viable.
The notion that the plane is faster than car or train is fine in theory but it's rarely true mainly because the K's airports are just awful places. By the time you've got to the airport, had to park a mile away, waited for a bus in the cold and rain to take you to the terminal, been shouted at and abused in a security queue and negotiated your way through a shopping centre, you could have already driven half way to where to you want to be. The trouble is even if the plane is faster than train or car it is rarely better as an overall experience - again because UK airports are just terrible places - and you have all the crappy baggage policies to deal with - none of which is an issue by train or car. Therefore even though people are traveling more than ever, non-London domestic flying appears not to have a bright future - therefore FlyBe does not have a bright future.

Just what would a buyer be buying? Could an established player like IAG or Easy (touted as interested) with lower aircraft lease costs, efficient management and systems not start the routes without an investment into a loss making company. The Flybe brand itself doesnt carry any more value than Monarch did.

EZY might be interested in cherry picking those core domestic routes from SOU as an example ie DUB, MAN, GLA, EDI, NCL, JER, BFD. They alone account for over 1m pas p/a, the big issue versus BE would be frequency!

That might have something to do with the chaos in parliament, the currency fluctuations & oil as well as the potential for a cluster of the highest order in recovering as pilots will now, by all accounts fleeing for the hills to all of the carriers desperado for crews... There can't be a truly successful operator of these types of routes while there is APD. But on top of this the problem with operating only smaller aircraft is that if you ever become successful at anything someone with a bigger aircraft will come and try and take it off you :-(

what exactly would easyjet purchase ?
why wouldnt they simply launch the route themselves without purchasing any part of flybe?

EasyJet could just start flying on Flybe's main routes from Southampton and finish Flybe off much cheaper than buying whole airline

I can see EasyJet and others be after the slots at Manchester for peak times and gate stands

could we see Flybe close a lot of unprofitable routes over the next few weeks to keep afloat

This report seems to read that Flybe called in KPMG yesterday to assess its books - the same adminstor that assisted Monarch in October 17 -

I really fail to see what easyJet would see in Flybe. If they did go ahead and purchase some or all it would just leave me with an overwhelming sense that the current CEO is not making smart moves.

Stobart Air has already lost £38m in six months. Do you really believe that they would want to lose even more? What management expertise would Stobart bring to Flybe?

Unfortunately I can only foresee BE being carved up and the vultures picking the premium slots on core profitable routes!

People spent months speculating that Monarch was going to be bought for slots, look what happened, airlines let it fail by itself, and then bought what they wanted from the administrators without the associated headache of a needless acquisition,
As KPMG are going in as they did with Monarch, I'm sure if it comes to pass, history will repeat itself

Christine was not best placed to take over after her poor performance at Cityjet. Laffin has not been inspirational either, pressing ahead with LHR ambitions when Hammad walked away. Still much a staff shuttle, a few connections and no real business uptake. The spat with Loganair was also a disastrous decision and has cost both parties a fortune.LSE and smal Ivestors trying to make a few thousand quid on day to day trading without regard to staff and their futures. Share price has tanked and KPMG now called in. Hope those jobs can be saved because of kids, mortgages and peoples future. People trying to make a quick buck on the market are disgusting.

I wouldn't be so quick to condemn anyone having a flutter on the electronic gee gees. If you have a pension then the odds are that there are a bevy of fund managers doing just that with your pension pot. You can always stuff it in a biscuit tin and keep it under your bed if you prefer. Anyone who was bold could have made 10% today.

Problem is that the FlyBe slots are in Terminal 3 and EZY are a Terminal 1 operator. There is no domestic facility in T1, only T3. EZY's MAN-BFS is handled as a special case not repeatable on a larger scale. MAN is terminal-constrained not runway constrained, so slots coming available have to be in the right terminal. This was an issue with back-filling Monarch at Terminal 2, and partially what led to Jet 2 having a split-terminal operation at MAN.

I still think that Flybe's petty, vindictive spat with Loganair indicates a company with no business acumen. Why they couldn't have agreed a code share is just bizarre.

I take your point, but if you need to fund your business from public funds there has to be a monetary motive for them to do so , it might seem like a flutter with people’s jobs, mortgages and their kids Christmas presents,but that is missing the point, the management of Flybe are responsible for the company, shareholders and employees, of course APD doesn’t help in that aim.

If the likes of bmi, Eastern & Logan can eek out a living then so should Flybe be capable of doing the same. The E jets was a huge but understable error of judgement, the bottom line is that with a cost base per km flown higher than SAS they can not survive, it’s not high wages, just short sectors with breakfast & tea time good loads and empty in terms of yield the rest of the days, I suspect it will be in administration before Xmas
