it’s not as though Ryanair haven’t had recent, well publicised disruption due to crew shortages.

given the choice I’d rather travel on a small Dash, with the ease of embarkation/disembarkation associated with flying with 70 pax, than with 180 pushing and shoving on a 738 or an A320.

over the last ten years I’ve probably taken 600 flights with Flybe, 70 Ryanair and 30 with easyJet. Flybe has proven to be by far the fastest from arriving at departure airport to exiting destination airport, most reliable, most punctual and by far the most pleasant experience.

With that experience of Flybe, who in their right mind would choose Ryanair or easyJet?

How many routes do they compete on?

True ryanair have canx flights however they did i seem to recall give plenty of notice to the punters , For some reason flymaybe choose to give virtually no notice and are now suffering for that by way of the beasting they are receiving on social media and the press , This has now resulted in serious consequences on bookings as one would expect
Ryanair are also AFAIK not tetering on the edge of financial meltdown .......

It's not that easy at many of the airports that BE serve. From my local airport, FR and EZY don't fly to any of the destinations that BE do, or indeed go anywhere close to them, apart from MXP (BE) and VRN (FR) at a push. Jet2 now also serve BHX-EGC and of course BE have competition on AMS, CDG and DUS. So flying BE from BHX is not actually a choice (as it isn't for pax at most of their other bases), the only 'choice' I have to go TXL (a regular route for me) is BE, take FR from EMA (a 1 hour drive and a service which is now only 2 x weekly, or certainly was when I last looked) or trek to LHR, MAN or BRS.....

I for one hope this route doesn't go but as many are at BHX, I am fearing that BE will eventually mostly forget Europe from BHX and reduce to AMS/CDG plus domestics

Literally way more people than wouldn't. LITERALLY, this is why flybe remains niche and contracting, parking jets and flying ageing turboprops whereas easyJet are re-equipping with new A320 NEOs.

All very true , TBH your average punter is going to run a mile from Flybe if they have the choice of using the likes of Easyjet with their ultra modern fleet and reliable service

I can only see anyone using flybe in cases where they simply have no choice , Sadly they now have such a bad rep i cannot see any way out for them

So sad given the way things used to be not so long ago

davidjohnson6 8th Apr 2019 19:33

Much as I hate to say it, I'm with Skipness on this. Assuming everything works, going with Flybe for flights under 1h30 is a more pleasant experience by far compared to Ryanair.

However when I buy a ticket, my absolute number one priority is for the flight to actually go according to plan - i.e. no cancellation, I don't get bumped, flight departs roughly at the time stated when I buy the ticket (i.e. within 1 hour either side), and flight arrives at destination airport within 1 hour of the time advertised at the time of ticket purchase; everything else really is secondary. When Google Flights says "flight often late" based on delay/cancellation statistics it makes me think carefully about maybe choosing either alternate flight for a similiar price or not flying at all

If the flight goes significantly wrong, it messes up my plans and will likely mean my having to spend cash to fix it - eg a hotel room or not being in the office when I said I would be. I am simply not interested in having three rounds of back-and-forth with some clerk who's paid minimum wage and instructed by their boss to be difficult as to whether EU261 does or doesn't apply

The news on places like the BBC has been screaming out that Flybe is perhaps not too reliable right now; plenty of regular pax will have got the same message

So Flybe subcontracting out Regional jet to do BHD-GLA
is that Nordica ?

davidjpowell 9th Apr 2019 18:31

I was in a position yesterday where I needed to book. Normally I book a first thing flight out of Doncaster to Dublin and an evening flight with aer lingus a day or two later to Manchester then get the train home. Ironically this time I am having an extra night in Dublin to get the Flybe flight home. If they cancel out, at least I can change the return flight...

V12 9th Apr 2019 19:30

I fly 30-40 sectors on Flybe a year; if it isn't going to run it screws my whole trip as it is tightly planned. Last 2 trips have had cancelled sectors. Im now starting by thinking how else can I get there. And if I take a longer road journey and I go easyjet not only is it faster, cheaper, more space and more cabin baggage, but I don't have to put up with the stress of the Flybe hand baggage police. And their CEO clearly failed her first exam on corporate PR -

Could someone explain what skills she has to be a competent airline CEO?

WHEN ARE THEY GOING TO REALISE THEY ARE SERIOUSLY PUTTING THEIR REGULAR BIZ TRAVELLERS OFF THEM??

Reversethrustset 9th Apr 2019 20:06

Surely it's a win/win. Book a ticket, if it gets cancelled then claim EU261 compensation. I'd be booking with them as much as I could, one could have quite a Merry Christmas by the end of the year.

Only problem with that plan Baldrick is if one has to be a certain location at a certain time and the flight is canx hours before you travel as flymaybe seem to do then you might find yourself in a bit of a pickle .....However if you have endless time to play with it’s a extremely cunning plan ....

Flybe is far, far less punctual than its main rivals, including the road and rail alternatives against which it markets itself. Its cancellation rate is sky-high and its reputation for poor reliability is well-deserved. Even Flybe does not contest this. (Contrast bmi regional and its long-running marketing campaign based on being “on time, time and time again.” There’s more money in being late it seems...)

Ryanair has excellent punctuality and reliability, even with its recent operational SNAFUs.

Flybe is a last-resort carrier and the fact it has a monopoly in most places makes it even harder to understand how it has lost money.

Any evidence to support these comments? While there have been high profile problems in recent weeks, what proportion of flights over an extended period are actually cancelled or delayed?

PDXCWL45 10th Apr 2019 08:28

Does anyone know when Flybe will release winter 2019/20?

Expressflight 10th Apr 2019 08:33

I asked this of them a couple of weeks ago and they said it could be as late as some time in May, although they hoped it would be by the end of April.

Well she clearly doesn't have personal charisma within her skill set. She does however have considerable experience, UK and Ireland Managing Director for Air France, then CEO of Cityjet and a member of the board of directors of IATA. So she probably enjoys sitting in meetings.

In a previous life I helped with a few techy problems Cityjet had with their comms. She got involved, and I could never understand why a CEO of a company would get involved with something like this, something so far down the foodchain.
Surely she had better things to do ?
