Just seen that planning permission has been granted to the airport to build an extension to the transport interchange including erection of entrance canopy and covered walkway.

Any news on this from anyone at airport

Regards

Stu

almost professional 19th Dec 2007 10:54

there will be some changes to this area over the winter to take account of problems encountered after build-my understanding is that this will include a walkway so that ATCO's no longer get wet when visiting the Spar for essential supplies!

bmibaby.com 19th Dec 2007 11:48

Is the covered walkway from the main arrivals building to the transport interchange, or are we thinking of a covered walkway like between T1 and T2 at BHX all the way down to departures?

almost professional 19th Dec 2007 11:53

the way it was described to me was a walkway between the departures hall and the interchange

Little Blue 19th Dec 2007 12:30

I'm sure that it'll fit in nicely with the rest of the architectural mess that makes up airside at EMA !:ugh:

bmibabyfc 19th Dec 2007 12:36

Well said LB... :ugh:

finding_nema 19th Dec 2007 12:59

To be honest, who really cares about nice architecture? EMA is a low-cost airport, attracting low-cost airlines and simple, easy to manage extensions are more cost-effective than building some expensive terminal that no airlines want to use. Ryanair as the airport's biggest operator, are known for their fickle nature in this respect, look at their kicking off to the proposed "Taj Mahal" second terminal that STN wanted to build.

Little Blue 19th Dec 2007 13:13

Well, you don't have to look at it anymore, do you.
In 5-10 years time, when the low-cost bubble has well and truly burst, then the airport will be left looking like a meccano/lego-type disaster and then, maybe, the owners will wish that they hadn't gone for all of those 'quick-fix' solutions, after all.
Bring back the Crockpot !

Hi All
Covered walkways !! Asubject thats been discussed many times in the ramp cabin after yet another passenger has given you earache after getting soaked/frozen/blown away now that it has been decided that Stand 12 is now a walking stand. If the passengers are going to be walked all the way from Stand 12 to the arrivals hall surely a bit of perspex and a few supports to make a covered walkway would not break the bank especially as there is a major risk that halfway along this trek you will be help up around gates 5 down to gate 1 as a Baby or Ryanair are being boarded and the inbound passengers will be held (in all weathers) until the boarding is complete.Similerly when the passengers get off the coaches at arrivals although not very far it is far enough to get soaked or frozen if the arrivals hall ia full and the queue strecthes outside.Passengers should be telling thier frinds what a nice and positive experience it was using E.M.A not how they got half drowned or nearly froze to death on their long trek to arrivals.

befree 19th Dec 2007 14:40

Ryanair are trying to kill off the expansion at stansted by withdrawing a large amount of flights. BAA stats show stansted is down around 7% last month overall. Without overall growth the planning applications will fail and BAA will have to come up with a cheaper plan.

Ryanair could move away from EMA very quickly if is spat with BAA ends.

HeliCraig 19th Dec 2007 14:50

Bringing together the last two posts...

... I flew with Easy from STN earlier this year. Won't go back unless the price is substantially cheaper than EMA / BHX / CVT (would even rather Gatwick); because I got drenched / blown away when we landed and I had to walk to the terminal; and my bags were broken!

It really doesn't take much to move fickle pax between airports!

OliWW 19th Dec 2007 15:08

If stand 12 is walking, im guessing it will be used more by the low cost operators... instead of the charters which use / used it in the summer / winter.

finding_nema 19th Dec 2007 16:28

I don't have to look at it at the moment, instead I'm at BHX, which is an airport which embarked on expensive terminals and as a result has a cost structure which isn't flexible to real LCCs like easyJet and Ryanair. Although the bubble is at breaking point for the LCC market, more people are flying airlines like easyJet and Ryanair for shorthaul journeys, it will be smaller, poorly-managed LCCs which will be swept away ...

Stand 12 was being used predominantly by LCCs this summer anyway, though it was walking only when there weren't flights from the eastern lounge boarding and it was in good weather. I agree that some form of shelter would be appreciated by pax and staff alike airside.

dumdumbrain 19th Dec 2007 17:00

I agree alot of the smaller low cost airlines will go in the next few years if not by the summer, ie Sky Europe. Which is why EMA needs to bring in and work with airlines with huge cash funds who can ride out any down turn. And I think EMA is working well with Ryanair, could do better but still, and the likes of easyJet. I'm still not sure what will happen or when with bmi baby, but either way when these smaller airlines go, another bigger airline will take the better routes. I wouldn't mind popping up and down to EDI.

All in all, EMA was done a great job this summer, although the domestic pax numbers is alittle concerning, even with the added numbers from INV, LDY, and BHD.

Also with Ryanair adding AGP from LPL, how long will it be till AGP is added to the growing route network from EMA. With 6th a/c coming soon, i wonder what routes if any will be added.

But im sure 2008 will be another good year of growth for EMA.

Lee

finding_nema 19th Dec 2007 17:25

bmibaby will be around for a while yet, at the end of the day, the British Midland Group has been around for decades thanks to a fairly shrewd exec at the very top, and the current Lufthansa situation will either see money pumped into them to make them more competitive, or sold off to another airline who will further recognise the good competitive position they have at EMA and BHX. Presumably Ryanair's 6th a/c will either open up more brand new markets not currently served from EMA like Fez, or more routes into France, Spain and Poland which seem to be working out very nicely at the moment. EZY seem to be content pottering along with 3 a/c.

ATNotts 19th Dec 2007 17:26

Quote: "But im sure 2008 will be another good year of growth for EMA"

May well be in PAX figures, but how about profits? Already it seems that the airport cannot afford the new baggage screening equipment to permit passengers to take two carry on bags.

Sooner or later airports such as EMA will wake up to the fact the reliance on Ryanair and other LoCo carriers but bums on seats but doesn't necessarily produce the revenue to operate as a proper airport should.

I suppose the EMA's saving grace is the revenue it earns from cargo and mail - unless of course DHL and UPS are also paying next to nothing for use of the airport.

dumdumbrain 19th Dec 2007 17:48

Well times are changing, airports need to look at how it charges and makes it money. More pax the more it can charge shops, make money from car parks. .. . MAG does make a good profit from EMA, but it doesn't need to spend money on things that are not really needed.

As I say time will tell.

Lee

ATNotts 20th Dec 2007 18:13

Whilst the new security screening equipment may not be needed, I think you will find that passengers will prefer to take as much carry on baggage as they can, and when they realise that the airport down the road (BHX vs EMA or MAN vs LPL) allows them that facility some will vote with their feet.

I agree there are a number of dodgy scams, such as EMA's car parking that can help to make up for money the airports don't make from the airlines, again, passengers and also their friends and relative who get ripped off by the EMA shortstay car parking charges will ultimately make their decision - a slightly higher fare, versus extra costs for car parks, food, and more creature comforts. Not everyone is a cheap skate.

You can't treat passengers like sh*t for ever and not expect to lose a few.

Stand 12

As far as stand 12 is concerned, until relatively recently it was a coaching only stand, but earlier in the year handling agents were given the choice of either walking or coaching from this stand, as this avoided unnecessary delays in the busy summer period when coach drivers were at a premium.

However, what seems to be happening more often is that handling agents are using their discretion and not providing coaches at all, thus leading to the increasing number of conflicts between inbound and outbound flights. This fact struck home most memorably last weekend, when an FCA Santa flight from Finland arrived back around 21:30, the temperature was just above freezing with a cold wind blowing, and because Servisair did not provide a coach, parents were forced to carry their tired and emotional young children from stand 12 to international arrivals. I'm not singling out Servisair for criticism here, on several occasions I have seen pax on Menzies flights walk through the rain to arrivals.

We would all like to see every flight have its own warm and dry airbridge, but realistically this isn't going to happen, and we just have to make the best of what we have.

Screening

It's the screening that's such a pain more than the actual flying these days, you never know what to expect from one airport to the next, it's what puts me off flying more than anything and EMA certainly isn't the worst in this respect, I've had some nightmares at security and not just overseas, STN for example!

Our outbound security last week EMA to VLC was belts and shoes off but leave laptop in it's case in rucksack.

Coming back this Wednesday at VLC it was keep belt and shoes on but take laptop out of rucksack, out of it's case and open it up for inspection.

That's only 100% different security wise with those 3 items. As someone who flies quite a bit it just  me off to the extent that I get the train if I can, why should the rules be so different?

Most effecient baggage reclaim I've ever experienced at EMA by the way, bags on the belt waiting as soon as we appeared in the hall!

egnxema 21st Dec 2007 07:54

Crusher1

Seems you experienced a very confused guard/officer.

DfT rules are that all laptops should be screened seperately, belts only need be removed if they cannot be searched in situ. But a tip - if you make the archway alarm, you will have to be searched. So if you have a metal belt buckle - always take it off even if not asked to.

One-in-three of those that do not trigger the archway are searched. So to ease your way through security - either dont wear a big buckle, or take it off while in the queue.

If you carryon is packed tight and cannot be clearly penetrated by the Xray machine it will be pulled and hand searched.

I agree that the DfT current security measures are not easy to live with, but having been in LHR T3 for a while I have seen a few "irritated" passengers who could have saled through security if they had packed a little less, not tried to hide 3 cans of Pepsi in the bottom of a bag, and just taken their cowboy belt off and put it in the tray.

They shouldn't be moaning at those temperatures when they have just spent the day at Lapland at probably -20/-30

Almost happened/considered

There is a picture posted on airliners of a Qantas 747 on the apron at EMA in the 80's.

The commentor states that QF considered an EMA-LHR-SYD service, later became MAN-LHR-SYD.

WW actually announced EMA-CPH, but never started it.

As this is a quiet week for news - how about we review some things that almost happened or were considered. Anyone know of any others?:)

OliWW 23rd Dec 2007 09:02

I heard that WW were planning on starting a Budapest flight from EMA in 04-05 but never did...

Would have been a profitable route for them, before Ryanair moved in...

SAM-EMA 23rd Dec 2007 16:56

Anyone know why Ryanair flight FR702 diverted in from Kerry, originally bound for Stansted?

Thanks

finding_nema 23rd Dec 2007 17:15

Does anybody know who has the Manx2 and XL handling contracts yet?

egnxema, baby have launched and dropped, or announced but never flown; MJV, CPH, MAD, NCE (though this is returning), BGY, PSA, TLS, BCN, LYS, BOD, BUD, DUB, ORK and NOC from what I can remember. bmi regional did ABZ for a season once daily, and I'd heard that if baby added a 6th a/c or regional based a 2nd one that ABZ might be a new route.

Does anybody know if the second a/c for UKIA is being based at EMA to launch more routes?

LGS6753 23rd Dec 2007 17:28

Sam-ema

Fog around in the northern home counties is the most likely reason for the FR Kerry flight diverting to EMA (unless FR just wanted to avoid a positioning flight:})

egnxema 23rd Dec 2007 18:16

what's caused all the delays this afternoon/evening at EMA?

cornishsimon 23rd Dec 2007 18:21

just noticed from another site that Stansted was shut for 45 mins due to ils failure and in visibility of 500metres or less meant either lots of holding or diverting. im just guessing but this would probably account for FR702 diverting into EMA.

owenkirk2005 23rd Dec 2007 18:25
