Surely the root of the problem is that airports are no longer state or local authority owned and operated, but are now profit centres for multinational businesses, controlled by accountants and answerable to shareholders. The merits of public or private ownership can be argued, but the consequences of private owners, on the debit side are that they are likely to take a view on how and where to cut costs / increase profits to satisfy shareholders. On the credit side they may be more prepared to "speculate to accumulate" or invest for the future.

Yes, 100% agree. They're all short term shareholder focussed, which in this particular sector of owning major (public) infrastructure isn't the best model.

Bring back BAA, make LHR a 6 runway mega airport and let LGW & STN rot.
Perhaps NYC is the way forward where a 'Port Authority' run it in the interest of UK Plc?

During lockdown many experienced people left GAL, in many cases not of their own accord. Hence a high degree of knowledge, experience and expertise has gone and probably not been replaced to the same level. Such skills cannot be learnt for a good few years and perhaps this has compounded snow clearance troubles?

The status quo ie occasional meltdowns is mutually acceptable while they are relatively rare. The airlines will be willing to pay higher fees only if the cost of compensation is greater. Same goes for the airport.

Were LHR not where it is geographically that would be a good plan.

If such a plan were being considered then best location would probably be STN and turn LHR and LTN over to housing and commerce.

Not going to happen though!

Completely agree. Flying now has become a lottery. Never sure the flight will operate, if it does what time, where you might be literally dumped if diverted, will the bags arrive or the wheelchair make it?. It is time the regulator got a grip with these airports & airlines. Flying should not be a lottery.
The focus has indeed shifted to shareholders and these CEOs are paying themselves 6 figure salaries to do it.

Can you back those comments up with facts, or are you assuming random social media posts reflect real life?

Neither should anything else. But that’s what it’s become. That’s just the UK in 2022. You can’t guarantee your train will be operating, whether they’re on strike or not. You can’t bank on the supermarket having the food you want (cream crackers at Tesco sold out due in 26/12
own brand and branded, I kid you not). You can’t bank on cafes and restaurants being open when they should be, no staff.

Current weather aside, flying is no worse than anything else.

Lufthansa are to start a twice daily service to Frankfurt from 23rd April. They tried similar a few years ago, hopefully it will be more successful this time.

WestJet have gone until next summer? Vancouver and Toronto both dropped with only Calgary currently offered daily to Heathrow? I know YYZ is going but thought YVR was staying.

Their app currently shows non-stop flights Calgary - Gatwick for a summer season from May to October, arriving LGW 09.00 and dep 11.00. This is in keeping with their previously announced strategy of flying their Dreamliners only from their Calgary home base.

It's a shame to see Vancouver being abandoned by WestJet but inevitable considering there focus is on their main hub at Calgary.

This means that Vancouver will no longer be served by a Canadian carrier from London Gatwick. Vancouver has been continuously served from London Gatwick by various Canadian carriers over the years on scheduled and charter flights. First direct non stop flights between Vancouver to London Gatwick started in 1968 with a ABC flight on a CP Air DC8.

I'm aware of the fact that British Airways are starting London Gatwick to Vancouver for summer 2023 but I wonder if Air Transat will at some point resurrect their own Vancouver to London Gatwick flights.

I very much doubt it. In fact Air Transat in recent years had non stops Vancouver to Gatwick, to Manchester and to Glasgow. They have pulled back all operations to Toronto and Montreal bases with only daily connections to Vancouver.
