First it was the inability to deliver the £124m access road for a second terminal but now it is looking a tad worse for airport expansion.
Boris Johnson will be announcing in the coming days a new pledge to reduce emissions by 78% by 2035 compared to 1990 levels. For the first time emissions from aviation and shipping are likely to be included in the new UK target so what does this mean for Luton’s DCO application?
Even before the news broke about this new revised emissions pledge LLAL had already abandoned its plans to submit its £50m DCO to government this year to expand the airport to 32m. It would have been tough getting it passed in the same year as the climate change conference in Glasgow but now it might well be impossible with the governments new targets.
LLAL are also now planning to put the DCO back out for a further consultation. During the last consultation LLAL had to bring in outside consultants for a series of expensive road shows to tick the boxes that they could show a consultation had indeed been carried out even though they didn’t listen as nothing was changed. Will the new consultation involve another set of road shows around Herts, Beds and Bucks?

I spotted a complete Dart train crossing at a walking pace the Gateway bridge over the A505 half an hour ago. It did look rather futuristic so I expect to see some publicity photos being released soon of the train on the bridge.

....Possibly.
So which airport are they actually flying to?
Releases suggest both KBP & IEV notwithstanding the London airport heralded as STN originally with KBP.

They will play each airport off with each other and go to the one with the lowest or no fees. So who will be using these potential flights as Ukraine is not exactly a holiday destination and Ukraine was never in the EU so how many Ukrainians live in the UK?

Why is that relevant? There are plenty of of Ukrainians with plenty of money but I doubt this service is aimed at them. SkyUp are a solid airline not a flash in the pan startup.

I wonder if that is the sound of a Brexit penny dropping. Probably not
On the holiday point, it hasn’t been in a big way but it could be. It’s just slightly off-radar and until Ryanair turned up options were few and expensive

In 2019, I flew with Wizz from Kyiv to Luton on Wizzair. I was not the only Brit on the aircraft - the people sitting next to me were telling me how they usually go to Florida every other year.
You can live well in Ukraine on quite a modest amount of cash. It's a big city with a long history and a lot of cultural interest. Many a Brit will happily go there for a long weekend if they think they are getting a bargain.
Think Prague in the 1990s as a comparison

I let three friends know, well they are English with Ukrainian heritage. All descended from Nazi PoWs. Many Ukrainians were forced to fight for the German army. Quite a number were held in UK camps after surrender and stayed post war, just like the large Italian communities in Bedfordshire.

Luton airport hits the headlines due to the super rich Indians arriving just before red-list restrictions started!

Luton has one of the highest Covid case rates in the country. From the local paper quoting Luton public health
Just need to look at the arrivals board to see Luton has a problem which the towns airport is making worse. No social distancing with the amount of kissing and cuddling in arrivals. Virus what virus. Plenty of people going home at weekends to virus hotspots. Go one mile away to the tidy tip and it takes 2 hours due to the strong enforcement of social distancing while at the same time hundreds of people are bunched up to pass through border force yet both are owned by the same people.
“We're seeing an impact from international travel now we can track it through, and we're working with the government to understand that data more.
We've seen a lot of travel from south Asian countries and from eastern European countries.
As a town, we've significant populations from those areas," she added.

Social distancing or the lack of it is not exclusive to Luton Airport, this photograph was the arrivals at TFS 17/4.....
