HNA Group now own Swissport Ground and Cargo handling. Maybe something to do with that?

According to several Chinese news sources, the HNA group are indeed buying large amounts of MAN stocks.

Is also reported to be the reason why the T2 re development has gone slightly quiet, as the HNA group are willing to add funding so means the way in which the terminal looks could be changed.

I'm hearing the same LAX. They think our plans for redevelopment of terminal are modest, and they can help make them grand...turning MAN into a worldclass airport to rival anywhere, and a more than viable alternative to LHR / CDG / FRA etc ! This all seems a little too good to be true.

I would have thought stock rights were "shares" ?

Either diluting the council holding OR maybe those from our friends in Australia?

Personally I still see it as good news..... providing we stay friends !

Just an idle thought. If it does prove to be 2 flights, is there a possibility one could be a joint service with EDI. Wasn't that a rumour a while back re Hainan?

As regards acquiring stock or shares, I'm a bit out of touch with high finance, but could it be a means of increasing the capital base rather than diluting the holding of existing share holders?

The Chinese know a bit about building airports, having opened about 100 of them at home over the last five years. Meanwhile, back in the UK.... zzzzzz

On another matter, still nothing showing for Egyptair beyond next weekend. Have they gone again ??

Surely it would be unlikely that any sale of shares would be limited to an interest in Manchester Airport but rather the wider Manchester Airports Group (i.e. including Stansted, East Midlands and Bournemouth). Also, do people really see a scenario where the GM Authorities would give up their majority stake in the Manchester Airport Group?

I do wonder if it might perhaps be shares in MAG Property (i.e. the sub-division which is responsible for Airport City, among other things) given there is already Chinese money being used in the project?

I did say all the Hainan infrastructure remained in place when the previous "chatter" went cold.

News that the group are hoovering up MAG stock and consider the expansion plans as only modest is, to my mind, the most exciting part of this news. The Chinese regard their airports not merely as transportation hubs, but as showcases, and on a grand scale. The potential could be enormous (subject to our ever anal, backward, parochial planning rules. :roll eyes: )

I agree Stoneybridge. We thought a new route was good news, then it became two routes...even better, but even this could be fairly insignificant if talk of what the Chinese plan comes to fruition. Very exciting times at MAN for sure.

I suspect it was Birmingham's business and civic leaders that were keen for Xi to go to Birmingham. Rather less of a positive slant if it was China that wanted him to go there rather than to Manchester, but why would they if there are such positive announcements for Manchester. Well done George anyway.

Nothing more than a short sharp dose of sour grapes.
In any case why wouldn't Brum's business leaders and it's local paper want such a prestigious visit? There'd be something wrong if they didn't bother!

I'm sure there's plenty for both places in all of this.

Got to say though that George Osbourne is starting to make a powerful case for an alternative to London.
I guess it helps that his constituency starts and ends at the boundary fence of Runway 2

I'm not sure there is any political mileage for GO "locally " but fair play to the man certainly upping Manchester's profile nationally and internationally. Not something he needed to do but has done.....

Never misses an opportunity to promote Manchester. ..

I never thought I would see the day !

Take note Graham Stringer and Graham Brady.

Sure start dates and times will be public Friday. Routes / frequency believed to be 4 weekly to PEK (A330) plus 3 weekly PVG (787), but again will feel a better when official.

do we know if the much rumoured EDI tag-on for at least one of the routes via MAN part of the deal?

Hainan have said no such thing about the start date.

When they are going to the expense of flying a B787 into MAN just to announce a route, I highly doubt the social media team would 'leak' the news to a stranger.

Plus, looking on the Facebook and likes, the social media team know 'nothing' about a MAN route.....

Just speculating, but could the Hainan flight on Friday be to take the 'unofficial' party of 150 or so Chinese business men that are here on the visit alongside the Presidental and 'official' government parties?
