I am a regular user of Man at least once a week and live in West Yorkshire on a rail line with direct links to the airport. If I use the train I would have to either get taxi to nearest mainline station - there is no parking or none that is safe anyway and then get train. Other option again taxi to local halt again no parking then change trains on route. Bus to station you say - well we have 2 a day which come within in 2 miles of my house to coincide with schools. Car journey is 45min park in short haul, or when long haul airline sends driver and car, simples. Therefore the only time I would set out to deliberately take transport would be if there was some totally unforeseen event which for the life of me I can not think off.
However I also have a flat in Central London where I happily use public transport (there is so much of it !!)to and from airports, and on a day to day, as little point in having a full time car there, which may explain the high use of public transport to gain access to SE airports by others. If in London you already have the best public transport in the country even if the population of that city do not believe you.

Not Manchester news as such BUT just an observation.
£344m to expand London City.
A modest new terminal and 7...yes 7 new stands. Creating a storm of media interest for the "national good".
It does make the MAN £1bn expansion and the mega increase in capacity appear excellent value for money by comparison ...

a) there is more to LCY's expansion than you pick out in your comment hence understating what the investment will deliver, or
b) MAG is delivering the T2 expansion on the cheap (so overstating what the investment will deliver) or
c) somewhere in between...
The expanded terminal at LCY will have a capacity of 6.5 million pax a year which I believe is greater than that of T3 at MAN. The work also includes a new parallel taxiway (oh for such a thing for 23L/5R). Also, seven additional stands is six more than the Manchester development programme will deliver...(tongue firmly planted in cheek...!)

They are encouraging government investment. MAN / MAG would not benefit from government investment would it ?
No....but if they came forward with an offer of infastructure re link roads, rail etc I'm sure MAG would snatch their hand off.
It is of course highly unlikely given previous levels of meagre investment up here.
That said, if of course HAL are told that they have to fund the relative aspect of growth in road /rail/ tunnels around Heathrow it would set a precedent whereby MAG would also need to fund its own supporting infastructure, interestingly LCY has funded their own local transport improvement re DLR etc !
HAL would of course still place the begging bowl on the doorstep of Westminster against the back stop of HS2 investment heading our way, ooh lets see circa 2050 ?
...along with the return of that mythical creature the Unicorn.

Flybe-SQ code share builds on MAN hub
Great news and 'the bleedin' obvious' really. Not sure how passengers using Flybe can connect with SQ at Heathrow though, as the press release suggests. Manchester is the key connecting point, with its massive Flybe feed and soon to be SQ flights going both east and west. High yielding oil-related traffic from Aberdeen will have a great connection on to Houston, arriving MAN around 0800 and departing 10.15. Great connections to Singapore (non-stop ex MAN) too. No-one can now deny that MAN is becoming a significant hub, and doing so without a major based airline. MAN is, and always has been, a fairly unique airport. LHR Runway 3 good for the North?, Thanks but we don't need it.

Shed, history is against you. A parallel taxiway will be built sooner or later. Why? Because that runway will be used more frequently as the airport grows and will eventually have ILS at both ends. History has shown that every restriction the airport has had imposed or imposed on itself has eventually been overturned.
There will also come a time when parallel approaches and take offs will become routine as they are at many airports in the US, for example, with distances between centre lines less than the 1035 metres which has been the UK norm, SFO for instance operating with 750 feet centre line separation in VFR conditions, not to mention its parallel approach, parallel departure system being at 90 degrees to each other.

So, we now have SQ code sharing to 8 USA domestic destinations beyond IAH operated by UA, and on Flybe's extensive network beyond MAN.
So the bit in the middle we are missing is a UA codeshare on SQ's SIN-MAN-IAH service. According to an article published in Aviation Week yesterday that could soon be fixed, as it states that SQ/UA have applied to the US DoT for the approval of blanket code share rights on all Singapore/USA services operated by either carrier, including via intermediate points. Unfortunately I can't post the link.

The utilisation of 23L as a departure-only R/W is pathetic. No arrivals, and very often there are 8 at the 23L hold and no-one taking off. Due, largely, to the fact that the majority of 23L deps' turn right........Requiring a 2 min departure separation, to provide the radar controllers in Jockistan with the requisite 5nm minimum separation.

All segments of the new SIN-MAN-IAH flights are now fully bookable.
Fares for MAN-IAH-MAN are actually pretty reasonable.
The HiFly A340-500 was bringing Manchester City back, they seem to have this aircraft on regular call out.

Just going back to public transport and MAN. Because MAN still has a big outbound leisure orientated pax mix, it will always find it difficult to get more to use train/bus to the airport. The once or twice a year bunch (of which there are many) look forward to their holiday and they will be damned if they are going to use public transport for the start of their well earned break. No, they splash out on a taxi or they drive and park. It's in a similar vein as to why onboard sales on MAN based aircraft are the best on any given airlines network.
