An A330-300 might not have the legs without a payload restriction to SFO

Can't believe that GRQ is on the cards, albeit 'proposed' and with a small Do238, am very puzzled that it is a proposed twice daily. Groningen is a beautiful little gem in the north of NL and not on the usual tourist trail and equal distance between AMS and BRE. Have to wait and see whether this will go ahead but will happily use it with my family for all kinds of private reasons, but whether it is sustainable?

As well if these routes do succeed from a major UK legacy carrier might BA actually start considering some routes possibly, like Virgin they could have a feed from both sides of the pond with AA and Flybe (if they were to restart the codeshare)

Let's hope it becomes year round and VS develop further at MAN...

Fantastic news about VS, Thomas Cook showed it could be done on long haul P2P leisure, I suspect Virgin may end up doing it better, coupled with Flying Club as an additional incentive. The flybe codeshare is cherry on the cake, this is primarily a local operation. Pre-emptive strike against Norwegian perhaps, much like BA at LGW?

As for "Gatwick Fleet Shackles", well come on, it's a summer holiday flight and not daily at that, but all the same I suspect will do really well. You need to serve the market you have, not the one you'd prefer. It's the A330-343E operating which rotate between LHR/LGW as one fleet. Delta coseshares at the US will really help this one, mind you that's what we all thought about BMI and United on IAD/ORD. Delta doing wonders for VS focus IMHO.

The newer, higher MTOW A333s can easily do UK-West Coast of USA.

VS to Boston

The updated M.E.N. article now confirms BOS at 2 x weekly, not 3. (Thanks for the timings Logohu)

It will be interesting to see how TCX react to the VS news. Have they simply called a halt to further expansion in S2017 while they re-think their plans, or is an additional leased A330 an issue? After all, by themselves, the new VS routes shouldn't have affected TCX's intentions to increase MIA, JFK and even LAX by 1 flight a week, but a/c utilisation is impacted.

It was mentioned to me a while ago they TCX were struggling to get an extra
A330 so this may be the problem.

According to Airlineroute Thomas Cook has reversed plans to add extra frequency on the routes from Manchester to Los Angeles, Miami and New York. In addition, it has withdrawn reservations for the Manchester to San Francisco service.

Have lunch and head West.

Good to see some more signs of peak-spreading at MAN, which is really needed in the terminals. The new Virgin BOS flights will be a mid afternoon departure, Delta's JFK is now 1345 and AA's ORD moves to around 1330, I think, in the summer. North Atlantic services still biased towards a morning departure but until recently it was all over by midday.

If aircraft / demand is not the issue with their SFO service, I would expect TCX to focus on CPT...

Ametyst1, Not sure why you are repeating this because post 4559 yesterday linked to
the routes online article and there has been discussion since on the possible reasons.

Thomas Cook

It's worth mentioning that the S2017 long haul schedules as they now stand still show 36 weekly departures from MAN. These include a daily MCO and 6 x weekly to LAS, so plenty of healthy competition there with VS.

roverman, excellent point about US schedules now being spread outside peak period.

I know before the IAG takeover EI were really struggling to source additional A330 on lease, the only reason they're taking 2 more this year is because IAG activated 2 A333 options they had, so the halt on TCX expansion due lack of aircraft availability is very plausible. Low fuel prices combined with high demand I guess. As an interesting aside, apparently at current fuel prices it's more profitable to lease a B744 than a B772 at the moment even with identical loads purely due difference in leasing costs. Of course doing so would be very risky

The MTOW would be able to easily, but Virgin don't have any of those nor do they plan to get any

CAPA: BHX vs MAN

A CAPA report linked from the Birmingham thread is suggesting that BHX will grow faster then MAN from now on owing in part to what it portrays as a saturation of European destinations at MAN. I'm not sure about that, there are still places which have either no direct service or only a seasonal/ad hoc. Lyon, Valencia, Moscow, St. Petersburg, Eastern Europe generally. Luxembourg is coming back after a long break, Vienna only recently back.
Let's not forget domestically within the UK we have lost Gatwick and Stansted, which are probably not viable from BHX but maybe from MAN as point to point in competition with rail for non-central London areas. Even where we have service to a European city, frequency-building is important, especially to the business traveller. Business destinations need a minimum of a morning and evening flight in each direction, daily. Europe will always be the UKs biggest market. Plus feed to MAN's growing long-haul network.

Virgin's A333s are pretty new, circa 2011/12, which I guess makes them 235 ton versions. You're right that it is a long sector for it, but not the longest for that variant. Note that VS is planning on operating the A333 to LAS this summer (IIRC) which is only some 200mi shorter.

Besides, it's a whole year off, who knows what will end up operating it?

FlyBe codeshare of course crucial as witnessed here!

The Flybe codeshare for a growing number of airlines at MAN (I think it now includes VS, CX and EY - are there any others? I wonder why SQ don't use it?) in effect acts as a smaller version of BA's LHR shuttle.

It is a great idea that makes accesses to long haul flights from relatively remote parts of the UK and Europe that have minimal acess to a hub like LHR/AMS/CDG.

I hope that the forthcoming infrastructure improvements will make airside connections for the Flybe feed smoother than at present.

That's San Francisco, Beijing, Boston and (we think) Shanghai sorted. Where next?
