I suspect that northwestern 'finger of stands' is to be provided early and for bussing pax to give a 'hit' of stand capacity at the start of the programme of works. Much quicker to provide like shown than to build the pier.
Other stands will be taken out whilst the new piers are built and each is probably only a small increase in gates over now once complete.
So it's probably sensible to do it this way and perhaps, just perhaps, try and get a small number of airlines to use that area at a discount. I'm thinking Monarch, Jet2, Easy maybe. Airlines with an all narrow body fleet. Getting Jet2 to move to T2 early in the programme would surely also help relieve capacity issues at T1 and maybe T3 if passengers can move through from T3 to T1 airside.

As it stands T1 is getting completely demolished (save for pier B). That creates a huge amount of space to eventually increase airside facilities if the need arises.
I have seen plans for an expanded T3, which predominately involves an extended pier to the north east (I hope that is the right direction!) with the car park being built upon to provide additional stands.
That may be a solution, but those plans (I think) pre date the MAN-TP and I would be surprised if MAN did not have an ambition to also demolish the T3 site and construct a new, larger terminal somewhere around where the existing roundabouts/crowne plaza is now situated. This would entail a huge amount of demolition but would provide expanded airside facilities (including the possibility of more finger piers) as well as a possible double taxiway for runway 1. It would also being the terminal much closer to the existing classic rail station and closer to the new HS2 station.

Next winter will see an increased presence from Vueling.
This winter saw just a 2 weekly BCN, but, next winter will see a 5 weekly BCN, 2 weekly FCO and 3 weekly ALC.
Still just a tiny bit less than summer, but, a big increase compared to this winter.

Just wonder if the Flybe plan is for a MAN-LUX-BHX-LUX-MAN operation with it being a misinterpretation of 2 single one-way flights being published as 'twice daily' when it is just a routine daily return.

2 flaws in that plan David
BHX starts on 5th but MAN on 1st so the timetables don't match.
Secondly 12 weekly is fully bookable with 2 flights in each direction, so, is a full 2 daily mon-fri.

only because saw the business desk article quote 7.30am deptarure "allowing a full 10 hours in Luxembourg" before arriving back at 8.35pm, Bus ride was too bumpy to attempt to look at the timetable!
