I would have thought a provisional booking with the coach company that brought the evening passengers from Stansted to Southend might have been a good plan after all the weather was forecast so hardly a surprise.

Hello

Evenin all,
I am a long time reader but fairly new poster so please bear with me! Despite my inexperience in making my voice heard I like to think I have some knowledge of Southend and the industry, so here are my views on the day!

Easyjet cancelling the first wave: yes possible poor show, however to say EGSS Is only 50 min drive away does not tell the story as watiing for check in to close, transferring pax to a bus, completing the journey (50 min in a bus and fog is optimistic in my opinion) and then on arrival all pax need to clear security and check in bags...the result a significant delay. This of course does not mean it is not doable, but it does mean there is a huge knock on for the day. I would think I the decision was taken in good faith to protect the rest of the programme, of course that didn't work out but best laid plans...

CAT 2 ILS:
Southern dual, your posts are mostly extremely negative and as a general trend tend to take a pop at Southend at every chance, I wonder if there is an agenda in your posts?! For a chap that sounds well informed you do have some funny ideas. The chances of the CAA changing guidelines in this case are non existant, unless you fancy widening the runway and knocking down some hangars, and that's just for starters. In this case I think Stobarts finances would be chasing a lost cause!

Anyway back to today, it is of course extremely annoying but before commencing ops EZY were aware of the risks and factored that into their viability studies, as express flight pointed out this is actually extremely rare so let's keep today's and probably tomorrow's delays/cancellations in context. However I feel the cat 1 issue may always restrict EZY's winter ops!

Finally can everyone please listen: Southend does NOT close at night. Southend does NOT have a curfew! Both ATC and fire (cat 6) are h24 and have regular freight flights overnight. For those that have trouble sleeping, if you look at the section 106 agreement you will see that EZY cannot schedule arrivals or departures after 2330, however if flights were scheduled previous and are delayed due tech or weather.. they can, and have, departed at any hour. If they do choose not to this is an operational decision rather than the airport being 'closed'. LTN man and co please take note as there seems to be common reference to the 'curfew'! It does not exist!

Thanks for listening!

I don't think Southern Duel is being negative, he is just saying it could be possible with some forward thinking and investment. He never said it would be Easy !!!

Perhaps people like to hide behind rose tinted glasses and think everything is hunky dory at Southend !

Personally I believe that if Southend want to still be Europe's fastest growing regional airport as was a couple of years ago they need to do something about it otherwise they will soon become the biggest declining Airport in Europe .

There are restrictions for late running aircraft landing overnight but in reality as this occurs infrequently easyjet would never hit that quota imposed by the council.

Certainly in the recent past late running aircraft have diverted away from Southend rather than land in the early hours so while chesna152 mentions that there is no official curfew for whatever reason there might as well be.

The airport does levy a night surcharge rate and extra fees for fire cover but whether that is enough to put airlines like easyjet off from landing in the early hours I haven't a clue but it is a fact that while some aircraft have landed just past midnight those arriving at say around 2am go somewhere else.

Looking at the departure board it looks like another frustrating day. Not just for Southend but other airports as well but sometimes it seems that Southend feels the pain more with its frustrated supporters here.

Air Traffic Control

Does anyone know? Has something changed again? Over the last few days ATIS has reverted to runways 06 and 24. They were quite happily referring to 05/23 last week.

Excellent first post chesna152 and welcome to the forum.

The plan was to change the 'numbers' on the runway several nights ago from 06/24 to 05/23 but wet weather has delayed that. Meanwhile the taxiway marker boards had been changed to 05/23 so there was some apparent confusion as to what the ATIS should transmit.

As far as I understand the situation regarding delayed evening arrivals at SEN it has been a matter of the Operations department not being able/not feeling it cost effective to handle them much later than midnight. This year RFF cover was increased to Category 6 so that helped and I believe Operations are now more inclined to ensure that handling is available much later into the early hours. SEN always has been H24 from an ATC point of view so no problem there.

I am not sure why there would have been confusion just because they didnt paint the runway designators !

They could have kept it at 05/23 and just put a NOTAM out to say the runway is still showing the old designator. easy really ! smacks of inexperience

I presume the AIP is showing as 05/23 in which case a NOTAM is the solution

I believe the AIP shows 06/24 and I understand that won't be amended until January. I don't know if there was any reason the physical change couldn't wait until then so that the AIP and physical changes coincided.

I think there is a lead time for inclusion of the aip of my memory serves me right it's 3 months however if it's planned correctly you should be able to coincide any airfield works with an aip update !

Sounds like everyone is confused

At the risk of sounding negative again perhaps the last couple of posts prove that my posts are on the right track !

Anyway re the designators I heard B&Q had rune out of paint that night !

It's a shame that easyjet have still cancelled the majority of today's flights. Maybe Southend will now start to pick up some City diverts?

Diverts

I see that Aurigny Air Services flights GR650 and GR651 are operating out of SEN instead of LCY today.

Due for delivery today is A320-214-S G-EZOW fresh from the factory at Hamburg. Presumably this will fly the SEN-ACE route (plus others) when that commences later this week. The Aurigny GCI-LCY diverted into SEN a little while ago plus a couple of heavy bizjets.
