That's interesting, thanks Compton. By the way I'm sorry about the apple pie faux pas - I'll know better next time.

Another Glyn Jones piece about SEN in 2017 and the importance of the 12 new routes: Southend Airport: 2017 as a stepping stone - Airport Technology

Fill the planes at a profitable yield and they will stay. Chasing the market at huge discounts, spells disaster.
With Gatwick, Stansted, City, Luton and Heathrow mostly maxed out at peak times, if Southend cannot encourage growth, then the aviation folk are clearly not doing their jobs properly.

If Southend was truly and attractive proposition then I'd imagine the airlines would be flocking there.
Perhaps give it a few years until the airports really max out?
I can't help but think that Southend is struggling due to lack of market, you can blaim management all you like but if it's not producing the yields for the routes that are established then you know the problem.

Just to put it in context, what Glyn Jones says at the very end of that interesting article is that if you try flying from SEN and don't find it a more pleasurable experience than from any of the other LON airports then he "will give you your next flight for free".

Your phrase "Fill the planes at a profitable yield and they will stay" is obviously true. It's how you get to that situation that requires careful strategies and discounting fares when launching routes can be an effective and legitimate strategy. At SEN they currently suffer a lack of customer perception as to what destinations are available. One of the best ways of solving that problem is to try to ensure that their new routes appear at, or near, the top of the major online booking portals when searching LON as a departure point. You can achieve this by discounting fares in the first few months and you've then increased your market exposure considerably. You cannot simply go into the launch of new routes at the fares that you hope will ensure you achieve good yields from day one; that phase comes later on in the process.

I think what doesn't help Southend is that everyone knows Southend is on the coast and that they associate the coast as being a long way from London without looking into the facts.

I think most people in Essex, Suffolk and east London know where SEN is by now. Also the pax filling 3x AMS inbound most days of the week have also learnt the geography. It just needed time.

I have followed the Figari posts - one should always wait and see! I am a little puzzled why Flybe still show it as a destination on their website - indeed are promoting the route (I know SEN website still shows it as a new route but we know how slow they are to update).
They pulled the plug a little early for me if it was just poor sales. Does anyone know if there are other issues? Is it totally dead? Or going orange?

Forget the websites for a moment. All one has to do there in the UK is to pick up the phone and ask. I am sure it's a dead duck now. I can only assume poor sales.
I am still amazed there aren't 2x weekly flights to Malta all the year round.
All the old biddies in Essex used to fill Air Malta B737s 40 years ago.

Maybe a certain lack of proof-reading on the Echo pullout - Figari is still listed on the introductory page (inside cover). Oops!! Other than that - a jolly good supplement about the new destinations.
