In pre Stobart/ pre easyjet days was Southend kept busy with light aircraft? Has there been a downturn in light aircraft and flying club activity in the last few years?

Apologies if anyone has already mentioned this - but it looks like SEN - Barcelona with Easyjet is now back on the schedule beyond the previously indicated ending date of 17/03/2017. Continues into late March in line with other destinations. Let's hope it is back for good!

Southend used to be busy with Stapleford trainees but that has declined over the past few years.
Don't know whether that's due to SEN under Stobart or perhaps Stapleford not so busy lately?

Can't remember any details but I believe that a couple of clubs moved out of SEN as they didn't like the idea of controlled airspace. I think (not certain) that one went to North Weald. Someone will no doubt correct me if I've got it wrong.

Currently there are only two flying clubs at SEN, Seawing and Southend, based at the western end of the airfield, outside what I seem to remember from many years ago was the BKS hangar. Between them there are 12 to 15 aircraft on the aprons, not all of which are regularly flown.
There are further light aircraft housed to the north of the runway.
The CAA stats for April 2016 show there were 855 club/private movements, which equates to 28.5 per day, which probably amounts to one take off and landing per hour over a 14 hour period. I would imagine these figures also include visiting aircraft. There is also a reasonable amount of ILS and procedural training but I'm not sure if these show up in the CAA stats.
Unfortunately, long gone are the days when 4 or 5 trainers would be in the circuit at the same time and at home, hours go by without seeing a light aircraft going to or from SEN when in the past there would have been many.

Hopefully no one has put this video on this thread before.
Really good promotional video that has been out for a while now about the benefits of using Southend. I really can't see what there is to dislike about the airport and struggle to see why it is not busier in a world of crowded airports.

CityJet Stobart Air purchase
With CityJet about to purchase Stobart Air for 80 million euros, looks as though CityJet will be coming to SEN in the near future according to this article. Maybe an official announcement will come after the deal is completed.

Lets hope that the article does mean that Cityjet will indeed base aircraft at SEN, or could it just mean that once the takeover of Stobart Air is complete they will just continue with the present ATR routes?

With the jets they could take the Stobart model of trying smaller unserved markets, but extend it to places a bit too far for the ATR - such as Kristiansand, Tampere, Maribor, Clermont Ferrand. I'm sure there are lots out there.

Yes, it's what I hoped would be the August announcement.
I soft peddled a bit recently as it doesn't do to speculate too much when things are nearing fruition. I would stress though that I've no idea what the details may be of SEN's role within the new entity's operations.
