Believe you me, any new route from SEN is quickly picked up on this thread, since it's such a rarity nowadays...

Luxair charters today operated by a 186 seater B737-800. No idea how many onboard, but I can't remeber seeing a pax flight before with this type. There have been questions asked about the capability of 737-800s from SEN's runway.

I don't know if they still do but Ryanair's 737-800 fleet had de-rated engines so they needed longer runways.

I'm sure than SEN will always be a relatively minor player in respect of charters for big sporting events etc. in the London area, not least due to its runway limitations.

However, yesterday saw two Luxair B738 departures to Pau with French rugby fans and I believe these were the first ATMs at SEN for the type. It also probably breaks the record for the number of pax carried out of SEN; 186 pax (plus 154 hold bags) on the first and similar on the second.

With the right marketing approach to airlines and charter brokers I see no reason why SEN cannot pick up more of this type of work in the future.

I see that Southend comes tops once again in the Which passenger survey with an increased score of 86%. Have to say well done Southend

While that is an enviable position it was no doubt achieved by it being somewhat underused to say the least. I am sure that there are a few here that would prefer to see Southend join the bottom club with STN and LTN and be stuffed with passengers than the position it finds itself in today but today is a day that we celebrate Southend's achievement. Southend, the UK's number one favorite airport

GRQ increase

Service increase on the SEN-GRQ route, eff. 25 October 2015. Increase from 6 to 8 weekly, with flights operating 1x daily Mon, Wed, Fri, Sun, and 2x daily Tuesday and Thursday. No flights scheduled on Saturdays.

New flights depart Tuesday and Thursday mornings.

BE6034 SEN 7:15 -> GRQ 9:35
BE6035 GRQ 10:00 -> SEN 10:20

This is confirmed with a simple search on the Flybe booking system.

RNS Increase

There is a service increase on SEN-RNS also with an early morning rotation on Wednesdays and Fridays, giving a double-daily for both days, making the route 9 x weekly from the end of October.

Wouldn't it be better to base the aircraft at RNS or GRQ to facilitate an early morning arrival into SEN?

It also looks as if CFR gets an additional flight following its suspension between 3 January and (now) 17 February with a Wednesday departure in addition to the existing Friday and Sunday. The flight timings are also better with mid-morning rather than the current 07:45.

Edit: I see this additional flight and the better timings also applies wef the start of the winter timetable at the end of next month as well.

Any reason for the CFR suspension in January/February?

Are the double daily flights on the two weakest days, Tuesday and Wednesday, purely to add more flights to the departure board which until now was looking pretty empty (5 on Tuesday, 3 on Wednesday - now 6 and 4)?

I see no other logic when Mon, Thu and Sun would surely be better choices. Also, pulling forward the early departures to 07:15 instead of 08:00 is a risk as arrival by train becomes more problematic.

Another possibility is that these changes facilitate a new route which could be operated Mon, Tue, Thu, Sat, Sun, though I'm not entirely convinced by that theory.

I agree that an 07:15 departure seems needlessly early given that the first train from London arrives at SEN at 06:31. I cannot imagine why they have done that.

I also don't understand why the second GRQ departure on Tuesday and Thursday departs SEN at 14:45 as the aircraft appears to sit idle after its return to SEN at 17:50. Surely delaying this until, say, an 18:20 SEN departure would increase its appeal as this is what they have done with the second RNS departures on Wednesday and Friday. It almost (but only almost) makes me wish I was still involved with SEN and able to ask that question of them.

Basing the aircraft at RNS or GRQ would make sense if either route was double-daily each day but for just two days a week positioning would be involved each time.

I think the CFR suspension period is due to it being a very quiet period for leisure travel.

A reason for 07:15 I've thought of is that less staff are needed, as the same people can handle all flights. Previously, the RNS flight and EZY am flight(s) left close together. If that is the reason though, given the gaps in the schedule pushing the departure backwards to 09:15 and not forwards would seem more sensible.

Transun - Lapland

Surprise surprise it looks like the Lapland day trip flight in December is not going ahead, as it has now been removed from the SEN website and no longer bookable on the Transun website.

Unless of course it sold out, but at that price...

Also SEN's runway numbers are being re-designated from 06-24 to 05-23 from the 28th October 2015.
