My wife's hairdresser told her yesterday that the Duty Free shop at SEN is her favourite among the UK airports that she uses. She's one of those people who has to buy a whole load of new 'stuff' at the airport for her holiday (my wife seems to be keeping dangerous company) and I was surprised to hear of her praise for SEN in that regard.

Adria

The Adria booking engine seems to show a number of sold out flight for the coming 10 days on MBX-SEN although it looks pretty certain the route will not continue through the winter this year.

Adria

Hopefully they will continue the service next year if the flights have been pretty well used this summer. I wonder to what extent the lack of decisive action on where to base their aircraft next year (with Lodz, Tirana and/or Maribor all being considered) has prevented a MBX-SEN winter schedule?

Express flight

Very useful information you described there, I am sure we can all appreciate what your wife's hairdresser mentioned 'not'.

Have you any other serious comments to add!

Donīt worry Expressflight Canberra posted on three different airport sites last night regarding what he might have called superflous comments in his mind. He probably had crocodile sandwiches for his supper. I for one, like odd and different comments. As for Canberra chill out love!

For your info, our member Expressflight is one of the top contributors to the Southend forum because he has around 50 years of experience in the field, and still is involved, whilst takes the time to share facts with us. His unusual "lighter mood" entry does not deserve your stupid comments. Stay away from this forum. We dont want you here, troublemaker.

Frequent fliers keep flocking to London airports | City A.M.

Story reports how well all of London's airports are doing. No mention of Southend bucking the trend with its sliding totals.

Is it time to start panicking yet because if Southend can't grow in a thriving market what is going to happen when the next downturn takes place?

I don't know if the Stobart management team are in panic mode, but I am sure they are going through frustration mode, especially when SEN has nearly all its eggs in one basket with EZY who seem reluctant to expand the number of flights. Stobart Air have been brave to have a go themselves with one aircraft operating to 4 destinations, but whilst I have no figures I feel only Rennes is a success story (I flew with them two weeks ago; 54 pax to Rennes, and 43 back two days later). I have a feeling that the runway length is still not long enough to attract any of the "big boys", and that will never get any better. If Stobart are in panic mode, perhaps they will consider basing a second ATR72 at SEN for 4 new destinations, and then keep fingers tightly crossed.

The obvious must be staring Stobart in the face. Re-introduce the SEN DUB service using another ATR 72 3 times daily ideally with or without Aer Lingus . I think it was about 60000 pax handled last year before Flybe took it over and ruined a good thing

I enjoy reading the rumours about Wizz Air looking at SEN on the Luton thread, all because they're not happy with Swissport's handling. Would be good if they did come to SEN, but on the other hand pigs may fly...

Are we witnessing a repeat of Thompson's Coventry adventure here? That started off with multiple destinations &, I think, 3 based a/c; & ended up with the abandonment of the whole venture !

I think easyJet would expand their SEN operations if the whole package available to them was sufficiently attractive and obviously much of that is within Stobart's control. I believe there are a number of routes which would be under consideration but it remains to be seen whether easyJet find SEN attractive enough set against other options.

I've banged on about SEN-DUB ever since it was misguidedly transferred to Flybe who appeared to have an altogether different agenda for the route. In this instance Stobart have the reintroduction of the route totally within their control yet show no signs of doing so. I really cannot believe that a 60,000 ppa route cannot achieve profitability, especially bearing in mind the kudos to SEN of being able to offer through bookings to US destinations.

I should imagine that the Skywork service to Bern will be discontinued at some stage once their service from LCY via Basle becomes double-daily from September and Stobart do need to either find new operators or secure additional easyJet business; ideally both of course. Whether their tactics to achieve that aim meet with success remains to be seen.

I would of thought that the SEN-DUB stands a good chance of being re-introduced under EIr as now that EI are being sucked into IAG, IAG have stated the desire to expand longhaul ex DUB and as part of that increase connectivity from the UK regions.

I also feel that SEN need to look to an airline to operate domestic UK services, or should I actually say Scottish domestic services, the obvious choice being flybe, however they won't want to do that and damage the LCY routes.

Thomson's (no P!) CVT operation was curtailed at the same time flights were also heavily cut back at DSA and BOH (the other low cost scheduled flight bases) This was a commercial decision made after the merger with First Choice to concentrate on charter flying.

Wizz Air would be a good fit for Southend with its A320s. I can't see it happening on any large scale, but a couple of routes might be introduced. The success of the Krakow route in terms of passenger numbers shows the demand is there at SEN.

I imagine that, if there is any truth in the rumour at all, it could be simply a bargaining move by Wizz Air. Or, just possibly, they could be seeking to expand and see SEN as a useful airport for their 320s when they start flying A321s into Luton.

It's a nice thought, but most likely nothing will happen.

Why Stobart don't develop the SEN-DUB service though is a real mystery.....
