Are they expecting to get this work completed in time for the start of the new routes? Major work going on when the summer schedules kick in would surely cause chaos. Do we know when it's likely to commence or how long it will take?

The application has to be approved first (by the 9/03/2017 latest) before any work can commence. I can't access the plans online at the moment, so I don't know just how big or small the job actually is. Resurfacing can be done in one night, however if it involves rebuilding a taxiway then that is a much larger task. Guessing the airport feels these works are required ahead of the additional traffic expected from May onwards.

I am not moaning Cumbrianboy I am just trying to be realistic. I have witnessed so many start-ups over the last 50 odd years and unfortunately only a few have survived but let us see what happens over the next few months and hope the latest idea at Southend succeeds.

I see VLM Slovenia are hoping to commence 11 new routes from Maribor this year, London being one of them (probably using an A320/Fokker 70). Interestingly they're another example of an airport and airline with the same owner. Anyhow it's another potential route to keep an eye on.

A small quarter-page ad for flybe / Southend Airport and the 12 new routes in the Southend Echo today- with an exclusive offer indicated for buyers of the paper next week.

They're certainly undertaking a real marketing push on the new routes at the moment; online/social media competitions, radio adverts and competitions, plus local and national newspaper adverts.

VLM Slovenia
Quite a bit about it here, but no mention of which London airport - keep hoping!

Stobart air have announced that the Embraer jets will be going onto its AOC and crew training currently taking place with Flybe at Exeter. Also there will be a major push on marketing the new routes from mid march.

In fact looking at the SHS Group presentation from yesterday it would appear SEN is the front runner! The planned network for Q1,2018 also shows a connection from London (LCY or SEN, more likely SEN assuming that a blue line = A320 operation) to Ostend which would be interesting.

Adria spoke quite positively about the route at the time, their problem was the additional expense of positioning an aircraft to MBX to operate the flights. Had they decided to create a base there from S16 the route would probably still be going.

I'm not sure what planet they're on with the China routes and all the A330s, but the European Maribor routes look entirely plausible and realistic. If they come to fruition SEN stands as good a chance as any of hosting them.
The 2018 map doesn't look very clear, but if you look closely the line from Ostend is just the Maribor route going over the top.
Antwerp-LCY is also plausible, given Cityjet's weakening position on own-brand flying and their current Antwerp route sticking out like a sore thunb

Maribo
I am a bit surprised that anybody would want to risk investing so much money into Maribor airport. I visited this boring non-descript town 2 years ago, and it alone would not attract so many Brits. It's not too far from Ljubljana, a far nicer city. Of course Slovenia on the whole is a beautiful country, and the Slovenians have proved already there is some sort support for a London service. But a regular A320 into SEN; are you sure? Surely a 70-80 seater would be sufficient. I love nice surprises but I have my doubts about this one.
By the way, what did you local guys think of the FlyBe advert in the Evening Echo yesterday? I thought it was a wishy-washy weak poorly designed advert. If I was paying for that I would have asked for a refund. Anyway, let's hope the advertising campaign will kick in now and bums will fill seats on all their routes from SEN.
