I recall that we no longer mention diversions into SEN on this thread.

Understandable, but a pity nonetheless during this quiet period for the airport.

Oh, all right then, there were nine this morning.

STOBART NEWS

Stobart Aviation comprises the operations of London Southend Airport, Carlisle Lake District Airport and the investment in Stobart Air. Our target is to achieve 2.5 million passengers annually by 2018 at London Southend Airport. As expected, passenger numbers were lower than prior year, as we worked with easyJet under a new long term contract to improve load factors and yields with a view to growing volumes again in the near future. We are in talks with a number of major operators regarding sustainable new routes to achieve our growth plans by 2018.

Andrew Tinkler, Chief Executive Officer, said

"We have a stable platform for growth in our Energy and Aviation divisions, complemented by profitable realisations from our infrastructure portfolio. The Board is focussed on fulfilling the long-term biomass fuel supply agreements that are already in place in the Energy Division and on attracting new operators and passengers through our award-winning London Southend Airport over the next two years. Achieving these targets will create significant value for shareholders.

We have realised net cash of over £24m from asset disposals in the year. Cash generation from these assets will assist the Group in the payment of dividends whilst the growth divisions mature. The Board will consider further distributions of surplus cash generated on future asset realisations."

In plain English that sounds like Easyjet holds all the cards and wants a further discount because Southend has had a taste of what the airline can do if they don't get their own way.

If they do get an agreement I wonder if they would rob Stansted of more frames to put Stansted under pressure to cut their fees?

I did mention the diversion before all I get my head bit off and being rude at me. That why I couldn't bothered to put bring-up-to-date.

I enjoyed a lovely breakfast this morning on the 5th floor of the Holiday Inn which was enhanced by watching all nine diversions arrive. They arrived over about a 75 minute period and the handling seemed very efficient with the pax from three of the flights having to be coached to the terminal.

It is a grand view from there, isn't it? I also like the large images of the Bristol Superfreighters in the rooms.

You weren't on business with Stobart I suppose, Expressflight?

I too went with my brother to the Holiday Inn upstairs to see an almost full apron. I had read many times about the diversion days, but was never here to look. Everything had arrived by the time we ordered coffee and the fog had lifted at LCY, but a well spent one hour and £4.50 for two drinks. I did notice large areas of apron and taxiways which are obviously unusable. Do Stobart ever plan to repair these things?

That was probably courtesy of me.......

Obviously the number of diversions into SEN is of commercial interest. And days like today with an unusual number of diversions are definitely newsworthy. Can we just avoid posting each and every single diversion as and when it happens?

Please?

I post an RNS statement that clearly shows that the original sweetheart deal offered to Easyjet has now expired and that as a result the pax numbers (and by extension revenue) is down. The statement also states that the Air division is not making money and that the selling of assets is the only way to pay shareholders by way of a dividend. All dire news for the airport.

And what do most people concentrate on in this forum? The spotter's glee of seeing diverted aircraft whilst drinking economy priced coffee.

Maybe the mods should rename the thread "SEN spotters corner" as there seems to be a total lack of informed discussion here.

Southend is clearly stuck between a rock and a hard place. As I already stated a few posts back easyjet is in a strong position to drive hard bargain while Southend is in an incredibly weak position to even maintain its old discounts and may be forced to cut fees to even keep easyjet's reduced fleet at Southend.

While all the other London Airports have economies of scale and large income streams from retail outlets Southend does not nor does it have airlines queuing up to use Southend which must be a worry for the airport.

I am surprised that Southend does not charge a drop off fee which is becoming increasingly popular at other airports as a way to raise money. Both Stansted and Luton charge £2.50. While drivers and passengers hate it and call it a rip off it has zero impact on passenger numbers.

The RNS statement that you posted was interesting and useful information and can certainly help to stimulate "informed discussion".

I don't see however that it obliges other posters to "concentrate" on this to the exclusion of other topics. The growing number of airlines which choose SEN as their primary LCY diversion does indicate its increasing acceptance as a LON airport and the latest addition to that list previously hadn't considered SEN. The ability of SEN to efficiently handle a large number of unexpected diversions is also of interest and a positive to comment on.

I'm sure I'm not alone on this forum in having knowledge of much that is going on in the background but not being able to post that information. Sometimes confidentiality precludes the ability to enter into "informed discussion here".

To answer Barling Manga, no I wasn't on Stobart business as I severed all official connections with them in January of last year.

At risk of stirring up a hornet's nest, I feel miffed that somebody should try to dictate to others what we should or should not write about on this forum. Each separate forum should be allowed to cover the business/investment discussions, rumours/news, exchange of interesting sightings (I don't mean a list of aircraft registrations), and generally more relaxed chat like recently. When I go over to Southend airport to see how things are going, I am not there to collect aircraft registrations and I do not write them into this forum. I certainly do not enter into all the other forums and start telling people what I like and don't like to read. So if you don't enjoy reading the locals exchanging the occasional banter, either don't enter our forum again, or read and stay silent. Thank you.

I doubt if Stobarts can cut back any more on the discounts currently available to EZY. They get almost everything already for free, and I support Stobart in wanting to make a profit in order to get a return for their investment money. This is one of the problems when having a low cost carrier like EZY or RYR with a knife held at the jugular of airport bosses. I do not see any new airlines coming to SEN in the next 18 months, so of course I hope EZY can be persuaded to add a few new routes or increase on present routes to Spain and Portugal now that tourism is down in risky countries.

If that is the case, then its a very poor business plan by Stobarts. Reminds me of Blackpool.

Well said Tophat. Some people are all to quick to push their opinion on what should and shouldn't be posted. This is an open forum for people to post all elements of airport news and activity. As you said if you don't like it no one is forcing you to read the thread!

Might be a tad unfair comment.

Stobart can dangle carrots but it does not mean they will always find a herd of donkeys who might prefer another section of beach no matter how tasty the meal might be.

Is that reason why the LCY fly path had to change over head of Southend Area noises? Order by ?
I think it was more to do with routing south-bound LCY traffic over the top of the new LAMP 1a Point Merge arrival route between GAPGI and LCE 07, en-route to EKNIV. The LCY SIDs are restricted procedurally to 3000 initially (presumably, and inter alia, under the APTEV hold, which holds to the south at 4/5000). The direction of the hold is, I suspect, to allow the LCY SIDs a little more track distance to get to get some altitude on as, once initial 2-way RT is established with the departure, immediate climb clearance can be issued above 3000ft; you may recall that 'designed-in' stepped climbs on LCY SIDs were withdrawn as a result of level busts. Climb clearance has to be given quickly anyway as the LCY SID can run out of Controlled Airspace.

This seems to fit with the LSA consultation doc that has to explain to the public as to why their proposed SIDs are also procedurally restricted to 3000ft (and subject to ‘release’ against the LCY SIDs as they share the same initial altitude) as they don’t have the track distance available to ‘jump’ the LCY Point Merge design. However, why the Point Merge descent profile can’t have a technical intermediate stop off of 5000ft (consistent with a CDFA and that can be ‘turned off’ when LCY/LSA SIDS aren’t pending) in the vicinity of APTEV to allow LSA SIDs to go to 4000ft is a mystery to me, although I’m quite sure that there is a phenomenally good reason for not doing so buried in there!

Stobart Air Routes

The Flybe website indicates that the SEN routes to CFR, GRQ and RNS will revert to being operated by AT43 equipment with effect from 29 March 2016.
