Has there been any more information released about the Norwegian ops??

Last I heard they were hoping to begin flights using the MAX from June. Nothing seems to be on sale yet though??

Last I heard they were waiting for absolute certainty that the B738max will be delivered on time and available with ETOPS before making an announcement.

I imagine that they must also be worrying whether President Trump will cut up nasty.

No it's not. One signature of his on an Executive Order could at the least hold t/a ops up for a considerable while, not that I am suggesting that he will do so. However the lobbying of the US carriers along with his America First policy must be a worry.

They may delay or refuse to provide immigration services at the suggested airports, which I believe, do not currently have any international flights.

Norweigan increasing flights to Oslo, Stockholm and Copenhagen. Barcelona also returning twice weekly. They are also working on an announcement for the US routes.

More than S16?
What is more significant is that many services which might have been expected to be suspended through to end march are resuming over the next few weeks eg VY to Rome, TO to Orly, Eurowings to Cologne etc.

Re Norwegian US routes

Norwegian's end of year presentation is scheduled for Thursday the 16th if i recall ? I would expect an announcement around that time, they are actively interviewing crews for EDI and also for the USA base(s) MAX on track but questions over ETOPs with a new engine (LeapB)

The wording in the article is a bit confusing but it looks like 10 extra flights a week between the 3 cities. Also it looks like TO to Orly has already resumed.

Of course Ryanair has pulled out of Oslo, and ESY is cutting back to CPH from end June. But it will be interesting if/when the TA services are launched to see if transitting is available.

Not sure if Norwegian sell through tickets but Edinburgh currently and for the foreseeable future has no direct airside transit facilities. This is the draw back of a common departure lounge where Domestic & International flights aren't segregated. I know that EY, AA, UA & QR sell through tickets. Airport has a 1:15 transfer time but given Border Force has 45mins to deal with non EU (20 mins EU) a few missed connections with a 24hr delay till next flight or rerouted via LHR/LGW or GLA. Common Departure lounge allows access to the UK without passing Immigration or Customs. No secondary security area to screen pax to CAA rules. If you have travelled domestic from LGW & LHR that's why your picture is taken to make sure you have been seen by Border Force.

Is it not the case that the transiting issue will be resolved in the terminal expansion which kicks off later this year?

Definitely no plans, to make the lounge fit for purpose. This would mean all gates fitted with camera equipment, all pax going Domestic getting pictures taken ala LGW & LHR at security. All arriving Domestic Pax not allowed into the Common Departure lounge ala LGW & LHR. If Domestic to Domestic connection will need to be photographed and boarding card checked prior to entering the lounge. That's a huge infrastructure change of a very old terminal. Small sterile area may be created similar to DUB for the USA preclearence which you can enter but can't leave, this area will be used for CHN flight if Edinburgh is the first destination if not all the Chinese flight will go through Immigration & Customs then back through security. (They may get a small section for themselves). I'm not saying that eventually a two terminal solution will be in the offering but that's not the current expansion at the East End of the airport. This is why Aer Lingus (sorry Little Red) had its little corner of TN2 and BA has it little corner TN5 for Domestic flights. So doesn't matter what gate BA (apart A1-8) you get bussed to baggage reclaim. At LGW it's North Gates 55A-F haven't been to South but I suspect it'll have similar Domestic arrangements.

As far as I can see there is little/no increase over S16, the "extra 10 flights a week" are compared to the winter timetable and have all been on sale for months. It's a news article out of nothing... It's as if they are just trying to make random noise to stay relevant whilst the US route saga keeps dragging on... That's what we all want to see announced!

The other routes you mention are all year round anyway and have been operating during winter, although CGN is in the middle of a 6 week break.

I noticed on the Iberia express site that the EDI -MAD service, currently 'resting' until the clock change, is scheduled to operate Friday/Monday all W17. I would hope that more seasonal routes will become all year.
