Does anyone actually have O and D figures showing what traffic actually exists between China and EDI (or all of Scotland) via all the various routings possible (Gulf, London, AMS etc etc) plus how much of that traffic is European multi centre (so wouldn't benefit from a direct Scottish link) plus how many various Chinese cities this traffic originates from. If you have, please post it and we can all then see how realistic a Chinese link is.

According to routesonline Sabre estimates both GLA and EDI were circa 20k Chinese O and D passengers.

I am grateful to you for directing me to the EDI route shop page which I had not seen before. Given that a direct China flight would capture maybe 25% of the market, it is difficult to see any business case for one (but I will happily eat my proverbial hat if proved wrong). I could however certainly see the case for a short summer season of charters, maybe like the KE charters at GLA. On the other hand, I am surprised there is not more Orlando flying from EDI when you look at the potential market size.

EDI is a funny beast, Air Transat kept EDI-YYZ at once per week for years then simply gave up and concentrated on GLA. Air Canada took the opposite decision, they returned to the Scottish market not via their old West Coast stomping ground(s) but via EDI and it remains at a higher frequency than the re-started GLA.
I agree Florida and long haul summer sun remains comparably under-served but GLA currently has the better facilities for long haul hands down.

The increase in number of routes seems much larger than the predicted increase in PAX. I wonder if some other routes have been dropped for W17? Not surprisingly, MOL won't be trumpeting that - we'll have to wait until everything is loaded.

BZR, BRE, CFU, GOT, HHN, KUN, MRS, PSA and PIS are all seasonal already. That leaves 4 other routes not operating in W17 to be confirmed. I'd say most likely to be IBZ and GRO, plus perhaps OPO and VGO. That would leave BGY as the only new S17 route to continue into winter. But we shall see once everything is loaded and on sale...

I wonder how long it will take EDI to take the Vueling flights off their website....
Even Vueling still lists Orly as having direct flights. It just that if you call up a date, you only get indirect ones.

Code:
TO presumably use their flights to feed into their longhaul services, especially to W Africa
No offers of connections to anywhere on a single docket.
Transavia France tap the heavy Maroccan Diaspora of Paris itself and the only West African city served is Dakar another point of VFR traffic from Paris - Little if any connecting traffic is necessary to fill these flights out of Paris.
African connections are most certainly NOT a deciding factor of these services.
Regards Vueling and a few others I think there is a need to be careful as a trend of cancelation/delay and some withdrawals seems to be going on across the UK industry right now.
We need to be watchful because there may well be consolidations if booking are weak in the run up to easter.
The weakened pounds (buying power) could see significant slow down in growth towards the middle and in Q4 imho.
BTW parent AirFrance long haul offering from Orly is one flight a day to JFK and high density flights to the overseas territories (effectively domestic) in the Caribbean and Indian Ocean along side the internal domestic operations.
The transit and connecting opportunities remain with AirFance/Hop on the three daily flights to/from CDG.

You're quite right. When the route was launched by both airlines last year I thought that I had found lots of useful onwards connections, but I should have checked before I posted.
I think you are also right about the likelihood of consolidations. I think that Vueling have put on sale many more routes and flights than they had the resources to fly, just to test the market. Or their bosses at IAG have put their foot down on flying at a loss.

The evening schedule is interesting. Will suit FR connections if/when they get that sorted. The early departures of the existing carriers makes them inconvenient for anyone who doesn't live near EDI.
