What exactly is getting done airside? Wider taxiways and 3 new widebody stands? You'd imagine they might already have airlines in mind that will need those stands.

They are also strengthening some of the taxiways for larger aircraft. You would think something might be happening to require this investment, or they are sensibly future proofing. Who knows!

Development works
Which stands are being strengthened and prepared for widebody aircraft and where are the new ones going? Are going to have air bridge access to the terminal or are the designed for low cost operators (stairs and buses)?
A350Saltire any more info you can share on the plans? As a frequent user of the airport very interested.
Let's hope it's for new routes/ carriers....

As far as I know, three new stands capable of handling Code E aircraft - 777 / A350 will be constructed at the western end of the south east pier. Initially they will be remote stands but when the terminal extension is built , they will likely become contact stands with air bridges. I did see it mentioned that one of these stands could handle aircraft up to A380 size but dont know if that is still the case.
Existing stands 4 and 12 are having works done to accommodate aircraft up to 77W/A350 size.
I believe some of the substandard taxiways are also being strengthened to accommodate larger aircraft and improve operational flexibility.
I stand corrected if anyone has better info?
With regards new routes, there was a rumour of Air China this or next year but no idea how true that is. We may also see 787s from Norwegian for longer routes to the likes of Orlando etc once the 737Max routes are up and running.

Prior to that, an extension to the main apron was constructed adjacent to the junction of Taxiways Alpha and Echo.

In summary, stand 4 will become B773 sized and it appears, looking at the nature of the works, that the PCN is being improved. The new stand 106 will be B773 size. Stand 12 is being enlarged to B773 size. The new stands 15 and 16 will be B773 and A388 sized respectively.
Taxiways are being strengthened and widened where appropriate.
For the first time, EDI will soon be able to operate B773s and other high ACN aircraft on a regular basis with a decent payload / range.

Thank you A350Saltaire.
Any idea when this is scheduled to be completed?
Have not seen any signs on the start of the terminal expansion to date or the proposed new hotel either.

The stand works should be complete by July. With regards to the terminal expansion, the last I heard was that it was to start later this year.
On the UA increased frequencies, great news. I think DL to JFK has been a success so far this year and UA will want to strengthen their position particularly with Norwegian coming along shortly.

No change to AA that started end of March last year too. DL was a new route hence why it started in May, but otherwise isn't seasonal.
The main tx growth is going to come from Norwegian this year. Indeed there's a good chance that is why UA have applied these increases to pre-empt D8's routes going on sale.

So it looks like 5 daily flights to New York in the summer and probably one to the Boston area as well. It will be interesting to see if there's room for all the carriers, I also wonder if Norweigan will be seasonal or year round?.

I don't think DY will be daily to NYC, it'll probably be 4 weekly with Boston mixed in.

impressed to see how much lowcost budget travel there is to/from EDI to KEF with two carriers! Although WOW has an iffy punctuality reputation at least they offer a few connections on this service. Presumably EZY doing the p2p stuff. Will be interesting to see how this fares with FI increasing there UK presence.

UA increasing frequency on both EWR and ORD this summer. EWR is double daily until near the end of October and ORD is daily until the middle of October.
