Looks like Aena is going to be sold off by the Spanish state.

Luton Airport?s new operators pledge to upgrade its services | City A.M.

LUTON’S new operators pledged to transform the airport yesterday as their deal for the right to run the Bedfordshire site was completed.

Spanish airport group Aena revealed in July its plan to team up with private equity firm Ardian to buy the 49 per cent of Luton’s concession it did not already own for £394.4m.

The pair have bought out Spanish infrastructure group Abertis from the venture.

“The joint venture partners will now look to work with the airport management and all stakeholders to deliver a planned programme of changes to London Luton Airport which will transform the airport and deliver an enhanced customer experience,” the firms said yesterday.

Luton, the fifth-busiest airport in Britain, carries 9.6m passengers a year and hosts mainly low-cost airlines. It is also home to EasyJet’s headquarters.

The two companies have taken over a concession, granted by Luton Borough Council, to operate the airport until 2031.

The council postponed a decision earlier this month on whether to allow the airport to expand its operations to carry up to 18m passengers a year.

Positive news compared to the price MAG paid for Stansted. Should MAG wish to create Runway 2, going to cost them loads for the land that BAA acquired, then sold off!
Yes, but MAG actually bought an airport. AENA have paid money to be allowed to run an airport, but they don't own the asset.

wow, glad they made it down safely.. Didnt even hear anything about it anywhere.

Little inquiry, How come so much stuff is being ferried through Luton nowdays. The Flydubai planes, Elal, I read on a flickr picture that Saudi Arabian Military planes are also being ferried through Luton. Is there any specific reason or its just convenience.

Good news that the airport sale is finally completed, I hope we will get some new airlines or routes pretty swiftly, Not to mention a plan to re-organize and expand the current layout. With Heathrow still nowhere near expansion we need to capitalize on the airlines who just cant get in there or dont want to pay the high fees anymore. I look forward to the new year and what news it brings.

The Fly Dubai's went to MON Engineering for IFE work although the next one's are rumored to be going to the shiney new MON hangar at BHX

EL AL...probably because they have a Station at LTN with appropriate security etc and no slot issues

As for the Saudi King Airs....Possibly to allow a night out or two in London!

El Al?s new jets prompt talk of budget flights | The Jewish Chronicle

Aside from the extra short-haul capacity, an El Al spokesman said that the airline is considering a new service between London Luton and New York “to connect the two Jewish communities”.

El Al

Wow, this is very interesting. El Al are obviously doing well from Luton as it is with their full service offering but a low cost operation at LTN that complements the full service offering at LHR does make a lot of sense & will further increase competition with easyJet. Perhaps they could even decide to offer low cost & full service flights at LTN?

The New York route idea is very interesting. Presumably it would be 767 operated? But is their that much demand for a service to link the Jewish communities of the 2 cities, especially given the intense competition already on flights between London & New York?

Would be a brave and courageous decision for an airline which has been privatised, is not a member of one of the 3 airline groupings, and is losing money to go up against BA, Virgin, American, Delta and United, all of which have their loyal frequent flier card holders. There would need to be some very strong marketing agreements for this to have even a slim chance of profitability.

I am still hearing the word 'Norwegian'! Cannot get the slots they want at Gatwick to grow at the rate they wish.

AENA, Norwegian and El Al

The sale of a major stake in the airport operating company will in itself have no immediate impact on flights or routes. In a few months, depending on how the business is structured, the relationships AENA have in Spain may be used to leverage additional business for LTN. I can't see that resulting in new flights starting until W14.

Norwegian may be the subject of rumours, but they are well entrenched at Gatters, and IMHO unlikely to split their London operation. Gatwick are doing everything they can to maximise their efficiency and sweat their assets, like pricing operators of smaller aircraft out to create space for the likes of NAS.

In the past, El Al operated TLV-STN-NYC, so it's possible they could revive the routing but through LTN. As a result El Al will be best placed to understand the economics of such a service. Runway performance may be an issue.

Well, with Norwegian having 6 bases in Spain soon, could a different deal be done with Luton's new operators?
The press release about LGW talks alot about Long haul & second runway and Long term growth but what about the medium term?
