I was reading a November 1997 edition of easyjet's inflight magazine where Stelios was complaining about the council refusing his offer to buy the airport. I wonder what sort of Luton we would have today in terms of infrastructure and passengers numbers if the airport had been sold to him?

LTNman raises an interesting question and subsequently I found this piece from an article dated 5th September 2000 in The Telegraph.

"He has threatened to base the 32 planes he has on order elsewhere unless he gets his way, but he could hardly send them to Speke and win as much business from Liverpudlians as he could from Londoners flying from Luton".

With the potential new 32 planes, plus the 10 Stellios already had based at Luton in 2000 would have resulted in approximately 13 million passengers per year back then?

Who knows maybe Luton would be on 18 million plus today had he have got his way?

Little did we know then just how dominant easyJet would become at Gatwick and to a lesser extent Luton. Out of interest, does anyone know what easyJet's share of slots at Luton is these days?

Using August peak weeks, Easy have 42.6% of slots at LTN. They have 44.8% of LGW slots for the same period.

Easy should give us a Luton or Luton Town logojet. Orange wouldnt have to be manipulated at all. Home base, they sponsor the team.. would be pretty cool.

Is the new signature hangar fully running? Been around there 3 times over the last week or so and its always been all locked up.

If the airport had become "Luton easyPort", they may have fixed the leaking roofs - people have been tripping over the buckets in the arrivals hall and old departure areas all week.

Grrr

easyJet did actually consider the purchase of Hatfield after it closed, had the runway length been longer, who knows what might have happened!

Hatfield's runway was 6000ft which is the same length from the intersection of 26 which all easyjet aircraft seem to use these days.

I remember the Easyjet plan included a new terminal behind the fire station that would have resembled a bus station and would have had no creature comforts not that the main terminal now is exactly luxurious.

If there are flying out of Luton what plane would it be. Maybe the Titan 767 or maybe even a BA777

I also see that the handling agencies have changed

Does the 777 have the performance to take off from a 2100m runway with perhaps 70 tonnes of fuel on board and 100 passengers?

The England team flew out of Luton when they went to a pre world cup training camp in Dubai, (before the World Cup in Japan if I remember right.)

That time they flew out in a BA 777, and it departed from the Alpha intersection.

If they do the same to Miami I can't see it being a problem as I should imagine it would be quite light, as it probably not a have a full load.

Does no-one remember Silverjet going to Dubai in a 767, a 777 to Miami should be no problem!
