With STN thinking there have got Jet2, I have heard different. Could 2 737-8 possibly work here at LTN???
The airport has no room, for the additional aircraft or the passengers!
Also we don't need another load of duplicated routes to chavvy destinations, which already exist from the airport and flown by multiple airlines!

For most people heading for the airport the first view of the actual airport they see is the roundabout by the Holiday Inn. For as long as I can remember it has never been seeded with grass and just contains one metre high thistles and weeds that die back each winter. For me that sums up the airport quite well that it never goes that extra mile to try and improve its perception.
The mid term car park that has just been altered with a new parking area by 08 last winter is still a gravel wasteland with the odd bit of Tarmac.
The airport might well be spending £110 million on increasing its capacity but maybe an extra million would go a long way if it was spent on the things that passengers notice like not getting wet when it rains and glass windows for the passenger footbridges instead of cheap opaque plastic that offers no views.

LTN should cut back on based aircraft until the current mess is sorted out (landside & airside) Naturally, its not going to happen but some of the ongoing chaos could have been minimised by some realistic planning rather than the current cram 'em in and see what happens mentality!

Just listened to the Three Counties recording about Luton, yes it was all rather depressing and all very predictable. It was a real shame that the public relations manager was too gutless to appear on the show to try and defend the airport as not everything that was being said was true. Maybe it is time he or she was replaced as there is no excuse for the airport not to produce a spokesman particularity when the airport knew in advance about the show.
I think the disruption which is both inside the terminal and outside in the CTA and approach roads is peaking now as the building work is now in everyone's face but can't be avoided.
I hope that the £110 million being spent is more about just increasing capacity but also about providing real improvements to the customers experience. I fear that is not going to happen so I hope I am wrong.

When do stands 16 & 17 come back in use, i.e. given up by Signature - perhaps we will see a little rush when these come back on-line?
Stands 16 & 17 have already been marked up as stands 16-19 and are due to see some physical expansion soon. Between the actual stands and the fence there is a chunk of apron that has been designated as mixed commercial use and FBO use so business jets could well still be parked there but I would think that any parking fees would go the the airport.

Thought I would share these before the start of my shift.
Directly in front of the first photo and heading into the distance is the route of the old airside/landside boundary fence. To the left of it is the eastern apron. To the right of the yellow fence is the old drop off zone and in the distance where it ends is the new drop off zone. The metal sheeting that is being driven into the ground from left to right and along by the yellow fencing will be the drop for the new service road when it is dug out.
In the second photo the extension to the drop off zone is taking shape.

Maybe I am being Captain Obvious, but no wonder the chaos at the airport in the mornings...
Just looked on the departures board, between 5.30am and 9am this Saturday and there are exactly 50 flights departing from the airport and 21 arriving, using the existing infrastructure.
Using some rather crude calculations and basing each flight carrying 180 passengers, that 9000 passengers departing and 3780 passengers arriving!
That just puts things into perspective, for me!
While those figures are just an estimate, I have based it on the vast majority of flights being the A320 carrying this number of passengers. I appreciate there are a number of A319's operating from the airport that carry fewer passengers, but you also have an increasing number of A321's, also the 757's and 737-800's which hold more passengers. Also at this time of year on a summer Saturday, nearly all these flights will be flying out full.
Does anyone know what the existing infrastructure is designed to handle on an hourly basis, I assume it is far less than this!

Capacity Analysis 2012 report
2012 capacity figures but nothing much would have changed since then apart from Security where new equipment has boosted capacity despite there being no more lanes until next year.
Departures
2,350 Check-in per hour
2,630 Central Security
With the increasing up-take of on-line check-in and decline in hold baggage (both driven by low cost carriers prevalent at the airport), typically 33% of passengers (and over 50% at certain times of the year) of passengers proceed directly to security without requiring airport check-in. The check-in facility therefore only handles, at maximum, 67% of departing passengers.
Arrivals
1,810 Immigration
1,370 Baggage reclaim international
250 Baggage reclaim domestic
As with check-in above the stated capacity relates to the capacity of the reclaim infrastructure and excludes the proportion of passengers without hold luggage. Based upon the observed proportion, the effective capacities of the reclaim facilities increase to 1,960 for international arrivals and 700 for domestic.
Highway Capacity
Around 1,000 one-way vehicles per hour.
URS observed that the capacity of the road network serving the central terminal zone is approximately 1,000 one-way vehicles per hour. This equates to approximately 850 passenger vehicle movements excluding staff and other non-passenger vehicle movements.
Runway 30-34 ATM's per hour
Apron 30+ ATM's per hour
Runway-Taxiway-Apron Network
The modelling of runway capacity established that 30 to 34 two-way peak hour aircraft movements could be achieved. This single peak hour however could not be sustained. A longer busy period would not enable accumulated delay to dissipate before breaching the 10 minute average delay criterion across this period.

Looking at the above photos the new much reduced drop off zone was opened on the first day of the school holidays on July 22nd and looks like it will be expanded around the end of the school holidays. Impeccable timing comes to mind

I always thought that Luton was under utilised by the airlines and thus passengers. It proves that if the flights are available folk will fly from Luton. Remains to be seen to what detriment, the massive development will have on the popularity during 2017.
With passenger loads looking good to Newark, an additional B757 and a second daily service might be in order even though it is now more expensive for the Brits to fly £ vs $.

I assume the airlines with operations through Luton we informed of the chaos before the commencement of works, if it is cheap enough, the passengers will still travel.
Having flown out of Gatwick very recently, the delay on the taxiways prior to departure was more than 20 min at the hold. Not too sure if Luton has matched that figure recently?

I've managed in the last few months with no slots....
- 55 Minutes from requesting start to airbourne
- 37 Minute taxi
- Taxi time in excess of 20 minutes occurs about 2/16 flights
Maybe I'm just un-lucky but I doubt it...

When the departure lounge was built there was a corridor put in that was reserved for pier B. This corridor has always offered superb views of the eastern apron but has always had restricted access. The good news is that Smithfield, which is a pub, will be offering views of the apron from its lounge later on this year when the corridor is taken out
