Just checked just now at 5am and the queue is past the roundabout at the Ibis and maybe another 150m down the hill. All that could change for the better or worse when the part opened new drop off zone opens that will replace the old zone soon.

I'm possibly missing something entirely, but given many people have smartphones with Google Maps and Internet access allowing them to see live traffic info, why do drivers not use Airport Way to go up the hill via the newspaper printing plant to the Ibis instead of the A1081 ?

Whenever I walk along Kimpton Road / Airport Way, even at 6 am, traffic always seems non existent until I reach the Ibis hotel roundabout.

I guess folk who do not know the area rely upon satnavs which may not give traffic info, or just road signs?

So how I see it is the Airport are working on the principle that visitors will use the new reduced drop off area , get out, then enter the perimeter road and pay at the MSCP.
This gives them some what 600-700 mtrs where cars can queue away from the drop off area( allowing better flow )
As the problem now seems to be the short drive from the current drop off area to the current exit barriers which creates the backing up of traffic in the CTA this MAY just work for summer peak.
Am I seeing this correctly?

Yep that is how I also see it but the problem could be the cars that park up in the drop off zone and wait for passengers. If too many do that the only place to drop off will be the middle of the drop off lane so blocking the traffic.

...oozing smarm and lies in equal proportions.

The nonsense spoken by Ms McCall on BBC R4's Today programme was straight from the Number Ten cribsheet.

Coppers everywhere. Everyday there is a surprise at Luton but I wasn't expecting this one.

The ILS has been downgraded to CAT3a until the end of the month for both ends.

The multistory car park is almost touching the fence now on its southern edge as it is 19 columns long and not the 18 shown on the plans. This might explain why the fences were moved to create more landside space. With 2 tall cranes now operating by the fence maybe the rumour about the car park should be about the temporary cranes?

Eerrr, 'could be the problem'??!!! I'm sure you know the punters better than me and getting them to, 'Move along there please sir.' is going to be a problem. Mgmt will have to have a person on duty 100% of the time, or accept blockages.

Even if you try and move them on - that will the very moment their pax arrives and they will jump out of the car and open the boot to load cases. AND then blame LTN.

At the moment there is a sliding scale of charges for up to 30 minutes parking in the drop off zone but staying with the vehicle. 30 minutes costs £9 but after that it is a pound a minute while Stansted charges a pound a minute after 10 minutes on top of their £3 charge.

We will have to see if the airport tightens up the time allowed in the zone but with the exit barriers disappearing from sight I wonder how many people will think they can get away with a long wait not knowing they will pick up a charge at the other end of the CTA.

As pointed out someone needs to keep the traffic moving but history tells us that it is unlikely to happen. Luton has always suffered from cars parking up even when they had traffic wardens who would turn a blind eye if the car contained the driver.

I have been reading about how large metallic buildings like hangars can affect ILS's.

I was speculating that the cranes building the car park might have something to do with the down grade but both ends of the runway were meant to have been flight tested today. With the multistory car park still under construction it has yet to reach its final size so would they flight test the ILS if they thought the car park was giving them problems before all the structure was put in place?

Might just have been a pre-planned regular flight inspection?

There is , according to FR24 , a Diamond twin star G-DGPS ( note the reg ) doing the checks.
Always thought this was carried out by something a bit bigger with more calibration equipment- obviously not!

The down grade is listed to come to an end on May 31st. We will have to see if it is extended but expect the car park cranes to still be on site into early June as work continues on the final corner
