There are certainly various pockets of land that are still available for Biz jets including between south of Harrods and north of new Taxiway Foxtrot even if they left the long term car park alone.

Local Variation Most of the traffic congestion is cause by the existing drop off area and the short term car park. This should all be fixed later in the year when the new duel carriageway, drop off zone and road layout is complete and the new entrance to the short term car park opens together with the multistory car park.

There are no issues with the Ibis roundabout except when the tailback from the terminal reaches it and then blocks it.

AvGeek1 Reference the installing of the bridge over the road. Yes I don't know how they will install it without causing problems for passengers. As you say at 4 in the morning the approach road is really busy and flights are landing throughout the night. When the first bridge was put in it took hours from when the crane was first put into position.

As for terminal plans I will email them to you

Neos

runway08

Confirmed Saracens v Racing 92 yesterday afternoon in Lyon.

The team I presume arrived back on the 733 9H-MTF.

58000 crowd but Saracens were outnumbered 10 to 1 (fan wise) per the TV report and it certainly sounded like that on the TV.

I couldn't see any other supporters flights but given Saracens fan-base and ground capacity there were never going to be many flights from the UK.

My Opinion

LTNman,

The eastern side of the airfield is the key to growth in terms of both Biz jets and a satellite building to handle between 16 and 24 commercial aircraft stands!

I for-see three multi-story car parks to be built behind the current Harrods hangers and enough area / aprons to take LTN to the next level!

18 million pax by 2020 is on target, but the next level has to be 25?

Time will tell. I still recall the words of a current Director of the airport who stated the airport does not need to exceed 5 million passengers. Naive and lacking inspiration comes to mind!

As a passenger

Travelled through LTN yesterday. Arrived as Ibis H. Roundabout from Percival way direction about 8.30. 10 cars and a coach in our queue, traffic back down dual carriageway. Took about 10 mins to get to set down area. 5 mins check in at EJ. 5 mins through security. Having first cup of coffee before nine. All temporary signage and layout in terminal very clear. All staff we met polite and very efficient. Delays are starting in set down area due to 1) at drivers eye level you cannot see empty bays, 2) pedestrians crossing in centre is uncontrolled and 3) spaces are being blocked by picking up vehicles. Solution:some very pro active traffic management in the form of big people in high vis orange suits directing cars to empty bays, acting as Lolly Pop Man or Women at the pedestrian crossing and checking cars at the split for short term parking or set down. Cars with only a driver are not setting down! As to the Ibis roundabout 4 lanes into 1 will always struggle at peak times. I stick with my opinion, that I have posted before, that when the road is dualled into the CTA the bus lane should be extended from its current position all the way to the CTA. This bus lane will give clear access for the rail link buses, car park buses, staff buses, car hire buses plus all the other bus routes into the CTA. Vital link. All things considered all looked good.

2) pedestrians crossing in centre is uncontrolled
That could well be the Achilles heal of the new drop off area as all traffic will have to cross a total of 4 pedestrian crossings if the plans are correct.

Fun and games for me at 4am when I tackled the drop off area today. For less than a minute in the drop off zone I was presented with the barrier demanding £7. After depositing £2.50 the barrier demanded another £4.50. Pressing the help button resulted in no reply but I saw a man sitting in his hut oblivious to me hooting my horn.

After exiting the car and walking over to him he told me he was on his break. On my walk back the barrier was raised. Total time for just my car to pass the barrier from when I dropped the money into the shoot I would say was around 90 seconds. Easy to see how to block an entire lane and the CTA!

I will start to agree that LTN traffic jams are not just in the morning. This weekend many times I have been caught out by the traffic.

Another thing the airport need to sort out is the buses. When the bus leaves the terminal is leaves full with the bus saying "SORRY BUS FULL" and not everyone can even get on the bus.

Nice one Oltonpete.

I know I have asked before but does anyone have any info on when the ELAL 777 flights start to kick in. I assumed this was the time of year that beast starts arriving.

Future of the Waterford Route?

I am only speculating here, but could appear the Waterford route might be in question (again), along with VLM as a company...

I was just reading the below article and the airline has entered the Belgian equivalent of Bankruptcy Protection, very similar to Chapter 11 protection in the US...

This will last six months and give the airline time to restructure.

I was quite shocked to read the airlines load factor last October was only 37%! This has however been improving and April this year stood at 50% load factor.

The airline has quite an old fleet and does seem to fly a rather random set of routes. It does make you wonder what their business plan is like and are they in a position to look at renewing the fleet anytime soon?

Reports: VLM Airlines files for creditor protection | Airlines content from ATWOnline

Thanks david On another note for the heavies a Thomson 787 departed to LGW yesterday after mx.

Giles I think the route would be picked up again by another carrier if VLM did dissappear. They do seem to be a rather erratic airline in need of new aircraft.

Nice one buster, It does seem they are hinting at more ops. .

Very good article about Wizz:
Wizz Air reaches 20 million passengers per annum milestone
Good to see LTN in still increasing and at the top of the table.

Pretty good for LTN then, with 334 weekly Wizz departures for S16. Getting close to nearly 50 a day!!!

Seems that the airport is fast running out of car park spaces.

Limited car park spaces available on-site.

Car parking

Due to record numbers of passengers and construction works taking place at the airport car parking space is limited. Customers are advised to pre-book in advance and allow extra time to locate a space. Passengers who do not pre-book may be directed to alternative car parks off site. For further information or to book, please visit LLA's website The Official Website for London Luton Airport
I noticed this week that cars trying to enter the mid term were being intercepted. The short term and long term also seem to have a lack of spare spaces. Reading the above info from the airport it seems that cars are being re-directed to off airport companies.

Yes I wonder why the airport even publishes the info, as the whole world knows it including a clever arse here who has made a pointless post.

Weekly redevelopment update

Work has taken place this week on replacing the mid term car park perimeter track lost during the drainage work. Also today work is just starting on the duel carriageway.

The framework of the 3rd core has been started.

Work has finally started tarmacking the first part of the new drop off zone and the section of the associated approach road. With a temporary loop being installed this first section of drop off has parking for around 63% of the existing 4 lane zone and around a third of what was available this time last year. Also new lamp posts and railings are being installed. Looks like this new reduced area will be opening for the summer peak with the pay barriers by the multistory car park.

What are traffic conditions into the airport like at, say, 0500 weekdays just now? Is the Percival way route still open?

Yes Percival Way is open. Best to get up at 5am before you travel and select traffic on Google map from the left hand drop down list and make your own judgment. Here is a link to a screen shot taken at 5:50 (4:50GMT PPrune time) on Monday 9th and as can be seen the tail back was substantial. http://www.pprune.org/airlines-airpo...ml#post9370358. I did a drop off at 3:40 last Monday for a 6am departure and there was next to no traffic. For 5am you will be somewhere between the two.
