Who would fly EI regional at fares of €100-€200 return to an airport MILES outside London, when they can fly to LHR for the same price or LTN with Ryanair from €40-€80 return.
Absolutely no-one. Loads would be awful and it would be canned before it starts.

AerRyan I am with you on that one.
While exciting events are taking place at Luton the same can't be said regarding some of the drivel and fantasy thoughts that is starting to appear here. It is starting to remind me of the Southend thread just after easyjet moved in when speculation was at fever pitch who was going to be next.

It was just a proposal, Aer Lingus compete with Ryanair at LGW, what's stopping them from Luton. Your saying that people wouldn't travel through LTN with EI because they already operate LGW and LHR, but people fly FR from/to DUB from LGW, STN & LTN and passengers numbers are quite high. I know they are different types of carries but some similar carriers do operate to secondary and even tertiary airports. Although their is a huge market for passengers from Dublin to London, not ALL the traffic is destined for London.
Passengers could also travel though DUB for connections onto the US & other destinations.
Has EZY ever had interest in operating into DUB? I think they could operate to DUB from some of their bases like LTN, GVA etc.
There are no rules stating what can be talked about just things related to Luton since it's a 'Luton' thread, people are just curious and want to know
people's thoughts. If you don't want us to contribute to thread just say so instead of moaning.

LGW is so different for so many reasons. EI actually carry a lot of connecting pax, its far closer to the city, just to name a few.
I've already stated why EI won't fly to LTN, you can try and convince yourself that they will, but don't be surprised when the flights don't come. The market just doesn't work.

Kind of agree with both viewpoints to be honest. Luton could sustain a Dublin route with locals. However Lingus would be trashed with an ATR vs FR737.
Regarding "fantasy" Who would have ever thought we would have had Swedish 767's operating Luton to Pakistan. A french executive airline operating to the USA. Most people didnt think Ezy would ever succeed. Crazy things happen in this industry every single day. Whether they are successfull or not is another thing. I rule nothing out anymore other then a daily PA31 flight to Sydney.

As for EI competing with Ryanair at Luton on the Dublin route there is more chance that BA will come to Luton and compete with Easyjet on its core Luton routes

I agree that there is not a great chance they will operate from LTN, I'm just proposing that if they did if it would work. You obviously thought not which is fine. I wasn't trying to convince it's just we had different opinions.
As its already been said you cannot say anything is unlikely or impossible in aviation, I mean who would have thought that easyJet would be flying to Essaouria from Luton (year-round!) for example!
Can't wait for the weekly redevelopment update, I wait for it every Friday! I like to see the progress being made.

Was thinking about the 'future' and what other routes Vueling and Transavia could operate to/from Luton. These came to mind;
MUC-LTN (Transavia)
EIN-LTN (Transavia)
RTM-LTN (Transavia)
PMI-LTN (Vueling)
MAD-LTN (Vueling)
ALC-LTN (Vueling)
FCO-LTN (Vueling)
I'm not saying these would be successful or would ever operate but it just seems logical since these airlines are based in these places and could potentially take on a route to Luton. What are your thoughts?

I speculated a few weeks back, that now Vueling and Iberia Regional were associated with Luton, it would seem logical for Aer Lingus to operate to link into their growing long-haul and pre-border clearance from Luton?

Anyway, the fact that Luton airport becomes part of an Enterprise Zone is a massive boost, something those involved with the airport a few years back could only have dreamed about!

Sorry for the confusion however I would never rule out EI coming to LTN, if Ryanair are not careful or get complacent they could give it ago. FR tried to cut LPL and now they are operating at 50% more capacity than planned since EI arrived.
Peak morning slots however could be an issue at LTN.

Luton Enterprise Zone
These Enterprise Zones, can be exciting news, if the local authorites get behind them and are managed successfully...
I live near to Northampton, and they have had the Waterside Enterprise Zone for about the last 3-4 years, and is publicised as the most successful zone in the country.
For example Carlsburg, Avon, Cosworth and Barclaycard have opened new offices in the area, the University of Northampton is building a new campus and a new railway station has been built. Along with a new Marina and skate park.
Northampton Alive - Regeneration projects
While the zone should definately benefit Luton and be a catalyst for new things, I am not sure how the airport will benefit directly. Other than maybe airport related offices opening in that area.

At Luton they have Ryanair who could up their service at the drop of a hat and with Heathrow just a few miles away I could not see demand being that great for connecting flights because that is the only business they would have.

I honestly can't win with people on this forum, I just like to speculate about what could happen to the airport in the future, in my eyes there is nothing wrong with that. Some people are so unkind and sarcastic.
Anyway, I was looking into all of the routes that EZY launched in October 2014 and April-May 2015. Some of these routes had been operated already from the airport and some were brand new destinations. These included Copenhagen, Rome, Basel, Munich, Naples & Lyon. Hear are the provisional passengers numbers in 2015 (using CAA data);
Copenhagen - 408,868 (easyJet, Ryanair)
Rome - 110,956 (easyJet, Monarch)
Lyon - 86,499 (easyJet)
Basel/Mulhouse - 82,803 (easyJet)
Naples - 68,080 (easyJet, Monarch, Thomson)
Munich - 61,615 (easyJet)
These numbers look quite promising for a first full year of EZY ops (in conjunction with other airlines in some cases) and EZY could definitely expand and add frequencies on all of these routes. What surprised me was that Munich did quite well considering they also operate to MUC from STN & LGW.

I did not calculate the Budapest numbers so I don't have a specific number, but I think it will be behind Budapest as the number for 2014 were 428,056 and knowing most Eastern European routes from Luton it would have grown bigger in 2015.
I just calculated Budapest 2015 number using December provisional numbers and it was 468,107

I thought Aer Lingus tried that at Southend and it wasn't long before they scrapped the idea and the route. They had Southend to themselves and Heathrow is a slog from the Essex coast yet it failed.
Doubt they would make it work from Luton though.
