So thats how you artifically stimulate an oversupply of seats between Luton and Copenhagen...

Sell the tickets from £11 return!

Cheap flights from London Luton to Copenhagen at Skyscanner

Correct me if I am wrong, but isn't Air Passenger Duty for departing flights within the EU £10 per seat?!

Seems that Biz Jet movements at Luton are still out performing those at Farnborough. Luton is ranked 3rd busiest in Europe.

That's good news re Inverness. I think some of the Scottish routes which we're of course the original footprint for the airline have withered a little. Great to see INV getting more flights, hopefully ABZ might get a similar increase - after all it used to be twice daily and with Little Red gone there could be scope to increase?
GLA too could do with a bigger and better schedule. Some days GLA only has 2 flights which seems way less than it could reasonably handle.

Vigo

Buster
Based on two flights a week in Aug and a CRJ900 (90 seats)
Total pax was 1399 for 9 return flights so 1620 seats available
If my maths is correct then L/F was 86.3% so pretty good!
Not sure if the CRJ1000 was used at all, maybe others know!

Blue Air Turin?

I don´t think so, you can fly from several destinations on the Blue Air network to Turin in summer 2016 but not Luton according to the latest flight schedule. I see Iasi goes up to three weekly from two weekly next summer.

I wonder if their foray into Italy will stop with Turin or they will grow elsewhere too?

Turin is not yet in Blue Air's booking engine, but Bucharest flights increase from the current 5 per week to 10 next October. Iasi is up to 3 (2pw starts later in October) and Bacau is up from 5 to 6.

All in all, quite a significant growth from a small airline.

Weekly redevelopment update

Signature

The kerbing for the first five nose-in bus bays have been part laid. The bus station plan differs from the original plans as the manoeuvring area is now much smaller while the pavement area is now much larger. This covered area will have outside seating and tables with kiosks servicing snacks.

The bollards mark the boundary on the original plans for the edge of the bus bays but now this whole massive area will be pedestrianised and covered in a canopy. One could speculate that with the bus station now further way this large area could accommodate a further terminal extension.

A temporary materials lift has been installed by the side of the old first floor security hall to allow materials for the new shops to get to site.

Thanks for the photo update, really interesting to see how they are developing on such a small footprint.
Blue Air Turin flight times are good

They obviously don't seem to be put off by Wizz on their destinations either.

Luton-Copenhagen route has probably generated a whole new market that simply did not exist north of the Thames.

When you have university students living in Poland and commuting to lectures in London via Wizz and Luton as they cannot afford to live in London, air travel really is for everyone! Madness when they originally lived in the north of England and Scotland!

Cheaper to rent a room in Wroclaw, fly to lectures and stay in London hostels overnight once a week, than rent a room in London!

Did it not exist or was it just suppressed/locked? - discuss..

Two factors are normally in play on routes like this:

1. a "like for like" (fares not meaningfully cheaper) new route nornally stimulates a market to grow (lots of theories about why - mostly involving the surface access part of the "total trip cost" reducing the "travel decision threshold")

2. when prices suddenly nose dive to a destination loads of people rush to go because they have not been before - but then when everybody's been traffic stabilises at a new level.

Copenhagen Route Analysis/Views

On the surface it looks like the Luton to Copenhagen route is doing very well with both Ryanair and easyJet:

In August, 36,260 passengers flew the route, making it the fifth busiest route at the airport.

From what I can make out, in August there was 46,212 seats available on the route and this gives an average load factor for both airlines as 78.46%. Which is very good for such a new route, and the sheer number of seats being flooded into a new market.

However you need to also bear in mind that easyJet and Ryanair saw average load factors of 94-95% across their networks in August, so this is still some way off these sort of numbers.

(Seat numbers in August is based upon the below workings:

Ryanair had 23,426 seats available on the route based upon 124 rotations using the Boeing 737-800 seating 189 passengers.
With them flying the route twice daily in both directions, seven days a week.

easyJet had 22,776 seat available on the routebased upon 146 rotations using the Airbus A319 seating 156 passengers.
With them flying the route three times daily on weekdays and twice daily at weekends in both directions.

If easyJet happen to use the 180 seater A320 on any of the LTN-CPH route the number of available seats will be higher and above mwntioned load factor will be lower.)

--------------------------------------------------

I am not as confident as others this demand and number of flights will last or even be sustainable in the long term.

Both Ryanair and easyJet are benefitting from substantial discounts or incentives from Copenhagen Airport, to operate this "new" routes. These discounts were not made available on routes to other London airports, as they already had routes to Copenhagen operating.

With easyJet now pulling the plug on their Stansted route to Copenhagen, I think it is only a matter of time, once the incentives run out, Ryanair will switch the route to Stansted.

As Copenhagen will soon no longer be a Ryanair base, it makes far more sense from a logistical point to base the route where the airline has 40+ aircraft based, rather than operating it all with the 4 737's at Luton.

With the exception on Dublin, Ryanair has an awful track record at Luton, for operating multi-daily frequency flights. We have seen Milan-Bergamo, Stockholm Vaasteras and Gerona all come and go, or be completely scaled back.

Also before Luton even started offering flights to Copenhagen, easyJet have only been able to offer a daily frequency from Stansted in the past. In a year or twos time, I think we will see once or twice daily frequencies on the route from Luton, with easyJet and Ryanair will be no to be seen on the route from the airport.

Prices will also likely bea lot more realistic with lead in fares at £30+ and NOT £10!

It is not just Ryanair, you also need to need to look at easyJet's recent track on multiple daily frequency flights on routes they have launched, and wound them back in from operating 3-4 times a day to either single or twice daily routes. Routes that spring to mind are, Barcelona, Madrid, Lisbon, Rome, Milan, Berlin, Dortmund, Zurich, etc...

i thought Ryanair's Copenhagen base has already been closed a couple of months now.

Copenhagen - Luton from £9.99
Luton - London from £10
