I wish they would do meal service, when you consider how many other airlines that are full service airlines, do offer, full service. It seems all the major companies may be a bit complacent whereas smaller carriers realise that the extra service is appreciated.

A very 'different' service

'and the likes of Monarch who offer a very 'different' service.'

Monarch do indeed offer a 'different' service.
Wed and Sat from LGW with a pm flight
Mon, Tue, Wed and Sat from LTN with either a morning or pm flight.

For those wishing to eat a meal, you can pre-order. It includes free tea or coffee. Otherwise buy on board is restricted to Bacon Panini, toasties or filled rolls. And for those wishing to have a little extra legroom, that's available to purchase too. The choice is yours

Well it's got to be better than a wrap and overall probably cheaper too

ExpectmorePayless

I think where Monarch are concerned your user name is a little off, most Paymore and get less, one of the worst on time performances in the UK especially at LGW, seat comfort is a lottery, but at least ZB know it and all their cabin crew are going for reprogramming/new chips installing, latest great new idea, lock out the seats to stop recline function to improve comfort? if they really wanted to improve comfort they'd take a row of seats out..yes it would cost more, but you are already paying more to fly Royal Monarch.

Nearly dead's & newly weds this way...............

It seemed to paint a very sanitised view of BA that isn't always what I've experienced when I've flown with them. I don't doubt that BA can & sometimes does deliver 'world class' service but it's not always a given

What regions do you recommend BA could fly from and actually make, you know, money? Perhaps relaunch Inverness-Heathrow or open a small hub in Birmingham offering high quality point to point European services?

LGW-LCA-LGW Outbound Sat 05Jul14 / Inbound Sat 12Jul14

BA £455 with 23kg baggage allowance and a free wrap
ZB £401 with extras package including 26kg baggage allowance and 34 inch extra legroom seat. Buy a hot tasty in-flight meal including complimentary hot drink both sectors and I make that a saving of £36 per person.

And with no recline on some seats, you'll be able to eat a meal without some inconsiderate moron taking up any of your personal space.

On-time departure statistics are tabloid journalism. Better to arrive on-time.

BA Band 4 Catering

Hi,

I have been taking a look at the current on board catering standards booklets(my flatmate works for BA) and I think that the wrap service is indeed to do with market differentiation. All LGW Band 4 flights in ET departing after 09.29 offer a bar service, followed by snack then tea and coffee. However, flying from LHR after 09.29 on Band 4 in ET, you get a full meal tray offered with hot meal. There are however three glaring exceptions, Heathrow to Las Palmas, Mykonos and Santorini, all of which offer the wrap snack service as at LGW. I think it is no coincidence that these are also holiday/leisure focused routes just like most Band 4 flights are at LGW. It would seem therefore that BA thinks leisure travellers only need (or justify??) a snack on board.....

GF, You may be right.

It seems to be the same on LGW's long haul bucket and spade services. Returning from St Lucia (UVF) last summer, disappointingly we woke to the usual croissant and ubiquitous Otis Spunkmeyer muffin!

Having travelled frequently on those Caribbean services, I was surprised that a hot English breakfast was on offer on approach to LHR from SIN a month or so later.

That is interesting to see that there's potentially a difference on the long haul routes as I believe quite a few of the LGW routes are pretty high yielding, BGI, BDA and MLE all spring to mind (with the former two being on 4 class 772's).

I'm sure you must appreciate a 7 or so hour flight is going to be catered differently to a 13 + hour flight whether it is or not departing from or arriving into to LHR or LGW. This doesn't just apply to BA.
The majority of passengers would not want to be served a Full English breakfast meal just a few hours after eating a full 'evening meal' on an overnight flight from the Caribbean / North America.

BA's Longhaul onboard product offering from both LHR and LGW is pretty much the same. There are some minor differences due to different suppliers on some catering products i.e dessert pots / breakfast box styles...

As on shorthaul, there are different catering bandings on the longhaul flights too. These depend on flight length / destination / and sometimes can include competition...

I recently experienced exactly that in Virgin PE on a 6.5hr EWR-LHR overnight trip.

I actually found that the brekkie helped me to start adjusting to the fact that after 3 hours of darkness, and no sleep, it was now morning!

How are BA finding the 787? They seem to be subbing it out quite a lot of late on the BA92/3 Toronto

last week sitting next to an American guy in Business on short haul from Europe

He asked if they had Jack Daniels - the senior purser said "Wot? I don't think so...." I asked her to open the drawer and there was a whole rack of JD bottles - "Ooo- I never knew we had those!"

Where in Gods earth do they get them..............

Back in the day, "Ooo- I never knew we had those!" would have translated into "Bother! I had my eye on those for myself..." - but I'm sure that sort of thing doesn't happen nowadays

I'm sure they aren't all like what we saw on BBC2 and their are lots of very good and hard working ones, but some of them depicted on that program I honestly couldn't believe that they had made it to that stage! Didn't paint a good light to the viewer watching!
