TGR,

There was a production circa 1988 by Channel Television "A Day In The Flight Of", if ever one gets a copy I'd love it to show the kid(s). It was as Air UK introduced BAe146's on, in particular, the GCI/LHR route (Jets in GCI in those days were a rarity), I was the starring Ops Controller whereas we had to make up nonsensical situations and flight disruptions whilst I had wires up my trouser leg and around my b@lls etc.

By the time C4 (or whoever) filmed Sky Truckers (Cargo Lion) in 1997 I'd learned my lesson and about the only clip of me in that production is me sitting on a swivel chair, back to front, totally unshaven so much so that my own mother didn't recognise me.

Sure I did some filming for the production, including in many a bar and hostelry in Luxembourg, but they never used it much like they didn't use the footage of the director being medivac'd back to UK having been mown down by a motorcycle on a pavement in Accra

Right, enough of thread drift, back to subject please and a copy of "A Day In The Flight Of" please

Question about slots

I've got two questions about slots.

I've noticed that flights BA510 - 524 even numbers only (LHR - MAD direction) are actually operated by IB aircraft. They flights operate with IB codes in the MAD - LHR direction. Is this anything to do with slots holdings by the IAG airlines?

I've also seen that AA have purchased a pair of LHR slots for $31m from Cyprus airlines. The actual number of flights operated by AA has reduced significantly since the tie up with BA (withdrawn from BOS, JFK down to 3x daily from a max of 6x daily, reduced frequencies on DFW route, etc). What has happened to the slots - are they leased to BA? Presumably there is some time of commercial agreement?

On another matter is it just me who finds it strange that AA is undertaking a large campaign to promote its up to 17 flights a day with their BA partner from the LON area to the NYC area when they actually operate, err, three of these a day with their own metal, or again is that part of the joint operating agreement?

1. All Madrid- Heathrow- Madrid IB/BA flights are dual coded (Plus LAN connections) and Iberia retain a number of slots in their own name.

2. BA/AA TALC joint venture operations has seen some cross transfers with AA terminating Boston on own metal , yet increasing Miami and Los Angeles. One AA slot pair is currently leased to BA whom are operating an additional daily JFK rotation whilst AA reconfigure a number of 77E frames this season. AA will recover this slot in 2015.

3. As part of the merger with US, AA have to release 2 slot pairs from LHR to allow competition the chance to apply for LHR-PHL routes. The slots come from the joint pool as far as i am aware.

4. All BA/AA and now US services from/to Heathrow - USA are part of the joint venture and are metal neutral.
Both AA and BA can and do market each others flights as if they were there own -rather more than a simple alliance codeshare this is a joint risk shared profit/loss operation and a very deep partnership.

5. The partnership also includes daily AA and US services to and from Manchester and JFK/ORD/PHL which are also marketed by BA.

The flights operate with IB codes in the MAD - LHR direction.
Flights between LHR and MAD are operated by Iberia aircraft using Iberia callsigns in both directions.

They all have BA codeshare flight numbers too, of course, but the difference is that in the LHR-MAD direction those are in the normal range for BA-operated flights (e.g. IB3171 masquerades as BA520) whereas in the MAD-LHR direction they are in BA's codeshare range (e.g. IB3162 pretends it's BA7054).

I have no idea why the difference.

The one thing for sure about flights to/from MAD-LHR / codeshare / whose flight number I don't really care the only thing I notice is that the fares are never cheap on this route. Enough said on duopoly!

Iberia's LHR-MAD flights have been treated as BA "prime" flights since Iberia moved to Terminal 5.

I assume this is a systems/process issue because everything in Terminal 5 is set-up for BA's operating procedures.

BA882/883

Anyone any idea why BA have dropped flight's BA882/883 LHR to KBP, we had an email saying the flight is canceled next Tuesday with no explanation as to why, we can either rebook and fly on an earlier flight (not an option as we was flying from MAN the same morning) or cancel. Looking at the BA website it seems to have been canceled for most of the last week too. When we flew a couple of weeks ago the flight was pretty full, I would say at least 80%.

*Mods* If you feel this should be in the spotters section please move it, I do not want the moans complaining again.

She now also requires Dairy Free. Do you do option for both Gluten and Dairy free or can you request it? The Ba website only let's you select one of above but not both . Only in WTP this time. Any advise appreciated

Wouldn't the more obvious course of action be to phone the airline instead of asking on an anonymous Internet forum??

Since the political unrest in Ukraine the loads have dropped significantly coupled with a chronic pilot shortage maybe you explanation.

Calmcavoc, I did call the airline but they was less than useful and normally Pprune can be the ideal place for answers.
queenvic, I take your point of view but the problems are only in the East of Ukraine, the rest of the country is business as usual and my last few flights have all been busy with very few seats left.
Anyway we managed to get on the Monday evening flight from Luton with Wizzair, had to pay more because of having to use the train, but at least we will be back in time for work on Wednesday.

You can only select one or the other. Airlines try their best to cater to most peoples allergens on long haul flights but can't please everyone. I would say choose the gluten free option, (as most likely the only dairy would be the milk jigger or perhaps in the dessert) see what you get served and take some of your own food as back up anyway. Its a long flight so anyone would be mad not to take atleast some of their own snacks anyway.

EDI-GIG

Calmcavok, I do appreciate your input. Most are anonymous on here but many are on the 'frontline' and are well equipped and helpful enough to give a quick answer.

Cazza_fly . Thank you for your advise. That's what we will go with.

I operated on this flight last week and we only had 10 on the whole plane. The loads have drastically dropped off since all the problems started. Plus the airbus fleet is understaffed at the moment.

What's this I hear about a possible LBA night stop. Is the LHR shuttle route really doing that well?

LBIA, that has been rumoured (on galley FM) for a while now. Currently, the rotations on offer are pretty poor for connections. But, if it happens, it wouldn't be until the winter schedule. Don't hold your breath though.

Probably more the case that the first departure from Heathrow and the last from Leeds are losing so much money.

My daughter caught the last departure from Leeds recently and said there were only about ten on it.

By contrast a few weeks earlier we caught the first departure from Leeds on the Monday and the last return from Heathrow the following Sunday and both were full.
