As I understand, everyone that operates out of LHR got a letter, even roles that are not being considered for redundancy, such as the long haul CSM role, despite a 66% fleet reduction . Outstations are unaffected by the cuts, and so didn't receive a letter.
Normally I would expect the selction process to be fair and well thought out, but that just isn't going to happen.
Question. If LIFO were to be considered as one of the criteria, what would happen in the following scenario?
Staff Member one.
Cabin crew length of service: 2 years
Flight Soup length of service: 6 months
Staff Member two:
Cabin crew length of service: 1 year
Which staff member would be given his P45, being in mind that staff member two has been in his/her CURRENT role the longest? Hmmm.....

not illegal no. It cannot be used as a sole criteria, but could be used as part of a number of factors. In times like these, companies have generally been seen to do whatever they want regardless.
What is everyone's take on the scenario i mentioned?

Layoffs: The Last Resort of Incompetent Management
Now look at the culture of the new owners.
Layoffs in the core business?
Not during the crisis in the early 1990s when Weber was struggling (begging) to get the banks to provide financing for the next day's payroll, not after 9/11 and not during the current crisis.
The operative phrase is "competent management".
Which is what bmi hasn't had for a long time, if ever.
There have been good managers (Austin Reed, for one), but with SMB turning planning on its head at a whim, constrained in their ability to manage effectively

....the escaltion of your frozen pension (for inflation)
I'd check your pension rules. I'd be interested to hear what the deal is.

Should be interesting what Balpa's stance is on redundancy. Wasn't it the view that LIFO would be applied at some stage and a test case required - this might be it. I got plenty of friends at Midland i wish anyone taken by the grim reaper the best of luck

5% is for service after 1997 only.
3% max for service before 1997, I believe.
Not much good when the present "quantative easing" by the Bank of England will see inflation like the 1970's. It's coming faster than you dare think. A few years of 25% inflation and you're a dead duck.
Add on Cameron in control (or should that be out of control) of the Government and your pension will be worth nothing by the time you can legally draw it.

The number's still don't add up and they haven't touched the short haul program in the UK
I don't understand what they are doing with Regional, it seems that 50+ of their pilots are at risk of redundency yet some seem to think only one aircraft and 6 jobs are going? everyone at all bases except Chester (Airbus contract) have had a at risk letter.
Leeds is worst affected with numbers required going from 15 Captains to just 4 & 12 F/o positions to just 4, but all bases having positions cut.
Down at LHR the word is that some mainline flight deck will fly the jungle jet at LHR saving some off the 130+ flight deck positions other say that 130 is on top the 50+ regional pilots, 180 pilots would imply 12-15 units going 130-50=80 going would imply 8 aircraft going which is what the press statement said??
So are BALPA mainline going to allow 130 jobs in LHR to go and still have 5 aircraft (ERJ'S) crewed by regional flying in and out of LHR can't see that are Regional BALPA going to have 50 pilot jobs go and have mainline crews replace them?? what a mess

Schroedinger (Schrodinger?).
Do you suffer from the need to impart bad news?
Or do you enjoy it?
If you go back into your box, do you disappear?
You're right about Cameron, though. (Thatcher II).

Nope - just feel a need to impart facts.
Do you suffer from the need to mouth off at people who state facts?
I'll repeat them - just to keep you nice and calm.
Fact is, the bmi pension isn't inflation proofed. 3% max for service before 1997, then 5% max. Sharp rise in inflation forecast by every financial source you care to check.
Ignoring the facts won't save you. You need to face the facts and work out what to do. Do I grab a lump sum (if its offered, that is)? Do I accept the frozen pension? Do I retire now? Can I transfer the pension to some other employer? How safe will the wind up arrangements be? What do I replace the FS pension with for the rest of my working life?
Get real. Its a serious issue. Or, more accurately, it will be a serious issue when you're sixty. Having a go (or a poor attempt at a go) at me won't pay the bills.

I genuinely feel sorry for all you guys caught up in this mess. The writing has been on the wall since BMI stagnated in a cesspool of incompetent management after 9/11.
The two highlights of my BMI career were 1-the day I joined and 2-the day I left. It is a shame to see so many nice people caught up in such dire situation while Sir Michael (shake your hand like a wet lettuce) counts his cash.

Still amazed why our glorious media has looked at his actions and compared them to the likes of Fred Goodwin et al. What's the difference? They both buggered off with their pockets full of cash and left failing businesses.......

spot on Zebedie
SMB ran his own company at his own (and LH+SAS) risk to maximise his own gain, not build a world airline. The whole business was run to support mainline LHR operations and more importantly its slots, because with out the slots it was worth nothing. Luck played a big part but his timming was spot on, he has done nothing wrong or illegal. All of his emplyee's have been paid every month and the call to freeze the 3 year pay deal was not at his behest.
I am not saying he left the company in the best of health, but with a buyout call/put he was always going it was only when? What baffels most is the lack of oversight that the 50%-1 share, share holders appear to have had, they seem surprised by what the have found, even the staff now for the chop must have seen it coming, i don't even blame the various CEO's including the current, they have always had to have had SMB approval and his game plan was always his own.
All will now change for the better and under performing employee's and managers will be shown the door

New Era at bmi
On the 1st December a new era starts at bmi. The man responsible for driving the company to the wall over the last five years will be replaced. The only sad thing is that he will remain as deputy chairman and not be frog marched out of toad hall. A man who stole money from my bank account last January. Thanks to incredibly poor management we have over 400 pilots actually out flying with letters telling them they might be made redundant. This gives a whole new meaning to focused flight deck. To cap it all we get a letter from the CP reminding us to be careful out there as there is always a chance that the uncertainty (they have been mostly responsible for) might lead to unwanted distractions on line. If you read these threads you might be forgiven for thinking that bmi management can't be as bad as they are portrayed here - they are far far worse. I am looking forward to the day when everyone in management above the level of fleet manager talks German as a first language and this comnpany can finally move on and grow.
So whats the book opening on NT still being at bmi at Easter or this time next year
Such as:How he managed to hide so much from the shareholders....
