Good news indeed; didn't expect to see that happen, given the current environment.

Little historical tidbit: today marks a very special anniversary. On the 14th December 1960, fifty years ago today, Aerlinte Eireann launched the first jet services by an Irish airline, when EI-ALA, its first B720, flew from DUB and SNN to Idlewild Airport, New York.

Over the years, we've seen many great aircraft; we've seen many great advances (the 330 today, with c.300 seats burns around the same amount of fuel as the 720, which carried 115) and technology has changed massively, but it's worth pointing out that the one thing we haven't seen is a fatality - a hugely significant record, and a testament to the dedication of the thousands who have worked in Irish aviation over those fifty years.

Here's to the next fifty!

Just noticed today at work EI-CVA, EI-CVB, EI-CVC & EI-CVD are marked as ''tfr AMS Airlines'' from Jan 11. So their getting rid of 4 A320's to AMS Airlines & replacing them with two, first fleet reduction in a while at EI but have to say a good choice if anything better then seeing them parked up on a lovely Summer's day with no route to fly.

Aer Lingus have 4 A320 on order and Kavs8 said 2 are due early next year but when are the other 2 due.

Aer Lingus are also going daily with the Dublin - Hamburg route from March 29. I can't see the new BRS route working out at 3 daily with Ryanair on the route aswell. They are going to increase it to squeese EI off the route like they do with most airlines. I would like to see it work but they need people to go onword to the US. ABZ has a better chance but FR may also put pressure on them aswell.

SNN-LGW

V73. I understood the above was speculative. I can't see EI doing it and if they did they would loose their shirt. The SNN-LHR is performing extremely well as before the 18month layoff so they would probably be better off increasing frequency on this?

As a very frequent flier I would love for EI to tie up with the *A or ST but for the moment they don't so I drive to Dublin from Ennis and fly with LH or AF. Anyway way the new Premier on EI is very disappointing all because you cannot sleep on the new "nearly lie flat bed".

Has anyone else noticed in another (more nerdy) forum that there's a topic entitled "Aer Lingus to launch Turkey"?
Is this some cryptic pre-Xmas reference to Irish budget cuts and their potential detrimental effect on the national airline's ambitions?

I presume you intended to qualify this statement by stating "on jet aircraft". 61 souls were of course lost on 24th March 1968 at Tusker Rock, and the three crew on a training flight on 22nd June 1967 also died.

Not wishing to belittle any worker, but these dead should not be ignored.

I would say the bigger barrier to sleep is the short flight times. BOS is about 5 and a bit hours eastbound, JFK pushing 6, ORD 7. In my experience (this was with three crew, probably even longer now) the meal service takes over two hours and breakfast another 80-90 minutes before arrival. On BOS, in particular, there is hardly enough time to snooze, let alone sleep! OK the seat is not completely horizontal, but it is flat, comfortable, relatively wide and long.More than adequate for the flight lengths at EI.

Absolutely agree; it was certainly not my intention to ignore or disrespect the dead; however, my post was specifically aimed at the 50th anniversary of JET operations, so my comment related to fatalities in jet operations.

BOH v BRS

Why does Aer Lingus not step into the now vacant BOH route?

No competition, potential for USA connections.

BRS' new 3 times daily flight has some political historical meaning i suppose, but there are other opportunities out there (like BOH) with no baggage and no competition!

Is Aer Lingus retiring/scrapping the A321's or are they around for another while yet?

It looks like the A321 fleet is being wound down; EI-CPC was all white (and not just because of the snow!) at DUB on the 16th, for return to its lessor.

Not quite sure if they intend to keep any, but in the current environment, it seems likely that the entire fleet will be returned to their lessors.

Aer Lingus A321's

Read in the aviation press recently that at least 3 are going in the first quarter of 2011. The first, EI-CPC returns to the lessor in January 2011 with CPD and CPF in March. 4 new A320's are due in January, March, April and May (the latter 2 are 4678 and 4715).

Whether the rumoured Emb order will mean the departure of more of the Airbus fleet remains to be seen though the rumour is that several A320's are on the market.

A321 seats

Does anybody know what the difference with the seats in rows 1,2,3,4,5 etc to the rest on the plane. There is a €10 difference in the price.

It's as simple as being able to get off the plane more quickly.

In fact, I'd say there are certain disadvantages to Row 1 (Have to put your hand baggage overhead, No proper tray, air hostess can see what you're doing under your Cara magazine) that make it an unattractive option.

Rows 1-6

Rows 1-6 have an extra couple of inches of legroom. This is more noticable on the A320's that were originally for Iberia. You also get served quickly on the sky-cafe service (usually rows 1 and 3 first to be served) and on a short flight like MAN-DUB which I take regularly this means you actually get to finish your coffee before landing!

If you are an Aer Lingus gold circle member usually these rows are allocated to you without the extra €10 charge
