Wizz have announced that, subject to regulatory approval, they intend to launch 3 x weekly flights between Luton & Kiev from 15 september. Kiev to Bergamo & Dortmund are also planned.

Youtube video from the top of the "new" control tower taken in 1995.Take this nostalgia trip now and remember how things were just 13 years ago
13 years ago? Crikey! Since that video was made the original interior coat of paint & decoration appears to have stood up quite well...

Interesting Silverjet link: http://www.flysilverjet.com/press-re...any-roles.aspx

Interesting Silverjet was start of end

Silverjet shares have been suspended. The new investor has not given them the money that was expected. They are trying to find some money to keep going but it looks like the end will come in a few days.

It is very sad that people have been sold a story of sucess when things were going so bad as far as the costs are concerned.

Things did not seem to add up for a long time and the claimes of the boss were always very carefully worded to mislead.

Silverjet...are trying to find some money to keep going but it looks like the end will come in a few days
An extremely sad outcome if true. And with crude at $130 - $135 a barrel, Silverjet won't be the only terminal case either at Luton or elsewhere, over the next few months.

Looks like the heady days of airline & route growth-growth-growth are about to end; one must hope that Luton's aprons don't once again, begin to look as empty as they do in that 1995 video.

Only the environmentalists and NIMBYs will be pleased with the impending carnage.

Wonder if LTN will ever see an airline operating a New York service again? It always looked good on the arrivals board

EZY012 Edinburgh 07:40 07:31 Landed 07:31
Y7102 New York (Newark) 07:40 07:40
EZY062 Glasgow 07:45 07:40 Landed 07:40

Wonder what the airport will do with the Silverjet lounge?

andyafc...sorry I must be missing something here..."no doubt the demand is there"??? Actually, the facts would say that demand clearly isn't there, at least not at a level that is prepared to pay a price that actually makes any sort of commercial sense. How many more carriers need to go bust before that point is evident?

Grrr

I think talk of the demise of Silverjet are somewhat 'wide of the mark'. According to the rumours I have heard, the silver pheonix may rise again! Silverjet's largest creditor may well have the final say and don't discount Viceroy?

If SilverJet were to gain financial backing which is highly unlikely now, do you really think people would have the confidence to fly with them........no.
Im afraid its all over and the bubble has burst for them all SJ,MJ and EOS RIP..... they tried but they failed and its a shame.

Monarch Airlines' managing director Tim Jeans has condemned Luton airport for charging high aircraft parking fees, but failing to develop its potential.

Monarch’s managing director said the airline was charged £7,000 a day for every aircraft parked at the airport for more than 48 hours, compared with £1,000 at Manchester.

Parking up two 767's at Luton for more than a few days would cripple any airline in parking fees. £7000 x 2 Silverjet aircraft x 7 days = £98,000 per week. RIP Silverjet, you brought excitement and vision to the airport. You will be missed.

The Ryanair thread is suggesting that FR are looking at a number of additional destinations: Beziers (France), Trapani (Sicily), Kaunas, Malaga, Rzeszow and Szczecin from this winter.

Unless existing routes are to be dropped or cut back, that looks like an additional based aircraft.

The twice daily BGY appears no longer bookable after 25 Oct. Could be late of course, but seems to be available from most other bases. Pity if it goes completely. Would free up some sectors though....

With SilverJet now gone and the aircrafts likely to be flow out of LTN in the coming weeks to be put in Storage or Broken Up this is going to give LTN some valuable spare stads that they have lacked over the last year or two...

Is there any chance Ryanair or easyJet may choose to base some additional aircraft at the airport, esspecially seeing as they are not on great terms with BAA at the moment...

------------------------------------------

Just to contradict myself SilverJet maybe back!

RYR? Who knows what MoL may be thinking. However, it's probable that he'll ground many of his airframes this winter to save fuel costs. EZY? Forget it! The airline has already circulated its staff advising them of the probability of route cutbacks at several of its smaller UK bases and probable stagnation at its main ones.
