February Passenger Figures
Figures just released show that 574,384 passengers passed through Luton in February a 3.5 per cent increase on February 2010. Rolling 12 month figure is 8,803,626 down 3 per cent. With Edinburgh just 11,000 below Luton's rolling figure it is going to be touch and go if the Bedfordshire airifield can keep its fifth busiest UK airport slot.

Wasn't Feb 2010 that hellish month when there was a lot of SNOCLO's at LTN? Also whilst we're on the subject is there any news regarding which airlines are coming back this summer? Would be good to see the likes of SunExpress and Onur returning to keep things a little bit more interesting... what ever happened to the likes of TCX coming for a few summer flights? Sleepy old LTN eh!

Sleepy Luton
Yes, I think there was a bit of snow closed last February PlaneCrazy. I cannot see Onur or SunExpress returning this summer as their flights were connected with Goldtrail etc, which went belly-up last summer. It all depends on the charterer - if they see a market the aircraft will fly there but with Monarch expanding their scheduled services to Turkey and Corfu unfortunately I don't think we will see the likes of Onur in a big way but we live in hope. Finally I would not call the fifth busiest airport in the UK 'sleepy' - mundane yes (except for business aircraft) but would you not agree that is symptomatic of most airports these days.

compton3bravo, you are right Luton is not sleepy in the sense of movements; however sleepy in the diversity of airlines / routes / aircraft. I know all of the operators offer a comprehensive route network into Europe, but is there really no demand for long-haul from LTN? Now I'm not clued up on STN / EMA / BHX but do they offer anything along the lines of Barbados maybe, or an Orlando, or a Male? If LGW is the closest alternative surely there must be a catchment area waiting to be tapped into.

Wednesday/Yesterday, Harrods no room , Signature no room, Ocean Sky no room, hangar lines in use.... good thing Champions Leauge not this week, sure Luton would have been turning away trade, once again!

Expect to see a modest rise in commercial movements this summer by an estimated 3-5%.
As for Stansted, the white elephant sees no reduction in it's recent decline (see Stansted thread)!

Called in at the terminal today (Sunday) at 6:30 this morning for what is the start of the half term break for many schools. It was just like the old days with a queue of traffic all the way down to the bridge that crosses the A505.
Despite the notices and the signage on the side of the traffic enforcement van there were many passengers getting out on the roundabout either by jumping out when the traffic lights were on red or more blatantly by parking in the bus lane while they retrieved their luggage. Some cars parked up right in front of the camera van so it was easy pickings. If the camera only caught 50% it was still making around £1000 an hour at that busy time in the morning.
I also had a look at the site of the former Britannia Ops building located by stand 10. It doesn’t seem big enough to put an aircraft stand on it and suspect it will just remain as a piece of wasteland like the site of the former flying club.

March 2011 statistics
March pssenger figures were 671,463 up 1.3 per cent. The rolling 12 month total is 8,811,930 down 2.8 per cent. Air Transport movements were 5,585 up 5.2 per cent. Cannot compare really with 2010 because of Easter etc. will have to wait until the May figures are out for a good comparison.

C/L Final - cant see many German flights coming over if there's no Aircraft parking available as positioning out will make it cost prohibitive. Given that Schalke is near CGN if i'm not mistaken, would guess the majory will come by coach.
Also assume the police will be clever and use LTN for one and STN for the other, so if STN is as quiet as suggested would imagine the Spanish will end up there.

In 1991 and 1992 when we had European finals taking place at Wembley it started off with Italian and Spanish flights using separate airports but in the end they both used Luton and Stansted - of course the UK was a different place then and not essentially a police state as it is now - cameras and signs everywhere telling what you can and cannot do - it is first thing that hits you as you step out of the arrivals hall after you have flown in from abroad plus the traffic as well of course.
Many aircraft did not stay overnight and that was when it was played on a Wednesday and there was plenty of parking. The cargo area at Luton was used as a bus park!
In Euro 96 many German supporters flew over so we will just have to wait and see plus the large amount of corporate traffic whoever gets to the final.
