All down to wind direction. Mostly westerly winds (or westerly component) at Luton therefore 26 used. No doubt someone can give percentage 26/08 is used.

I think you will find this is true of all UK airports with West/East runways, the majority wind direction is the reason why most of our runways were built as such.

Grrr

1/3rd, 2/3rds roughly 08 against 26, and nothing to do with the 'wind' up at Whipsnade!

Did you see the passenger figures for Luton compared to Stansted for July 2011 - That white elephant really should join the heard of Africans up here!

I have just had a look, that 'chip' is still very much in evidence on my shoulder. Toodle pip!

The runway usage split (dictated primarily by wind direction) during 2010 was 36% easterly and 64%
westerly (compared with 28% / 72% for 2009). A monthly breakdown can be seen on page 21 at http://www.llacc.com/uploads/docs/An...ort%202010.pdf, highlighting an exceptionally high level of westerly operations during July/August 2010. A breakdown of runway usage over the last five years is also shown, giving a historical split of 30% easterly and 70% westerly.

Every statisic you could every want is in the document including:

Operator Movements %
EASYJET 32,429 47%
WIZZ AIR 12,714 18%
RYANAIR 8,312 12%
MONARCH 4,104 6%
AER ARANN 2,629 4%
THOMSON 2,294 3%
FLYBE LTD 1,043 1%
BLUE AIR 952 1%
EUROPEAN AIR TRANSPORT 830 1%
EL AL 570 1%
Others 3,725 5%
TOTAL 69,602 100%

plus a breakdown of aircraft types, which are too many to list here.

LTNman

Thanks for posting those interesting statistics.

One thing that surprised me a little regarding aircraft types is that there was 41.5% more Airbus movements than Boeing. How times have changed.

Photographs

Luton Hoo Memorial Park is good for photos if they are landing on 08 - unless you want to sit at the usual perimeter spotting points.

Israir at LTN this Evening?

Another Israeli airline at LTN this evening operating to Tel Aviv, called Israir. Flight number 6H118.

Is this a flight operating for El Al or a charter?

I think you find it has been coming in for a number of weeks and has nothing to do with EL AL.

Israir

Think Israir may have taken over the charters that Sun D'Or Airlines were operating into LTN.
Sun D'Or had its operating license revoked earlier this year and i believe they are now the charter arm of El Al.
They had 3 or 4 757s which presumably will be integrated into the El Al fleet-maybe someone could confirm if this has happened.

LTNman.
Thanks for posting the stats.Loved the complaints section. If they could remove, what is it 5 or so complainants then half the total disappears.
Nice to read they visited one in Harpenden to explain things.
Should have sent the Bear

Israir have a mixture of A320 & B757 which might be seen at LTN, another STN loss.
As for Harpenden, bring back the Court Line fleet, grew up with them above and had no issues, in fact we had 2 pilots and a couple of ground crew living in our road. Things just gone silly in AL5 postcode, mostly commuters anyhow other than the retired bank managers, have you ever seen so many estate agents in a single high street!

Thanks very much STN then. Last RYR flight out, remember to switch off the lights.
I'll think you will find that STN did not get rid of El Al, Luton is just better placed to serve their catchments area now the M1 has been upgraded.

LTNman - you teeze like Buster but I think I know what it is

Luton, Luton, Luton ...

Please dont think that STN is dead, Yes Airline are leaving but this is part of the BIG game, BAA want them to leave and this is for two reasons.

1. Make STN look like a bad investment and aid the fight for a none sale.
2. Slots and Stands for the Olympics.

Luton, you want to hope that BAA find a way to keep a hold of STN because its the only way you will keep growing.

Oh lord give me strength; I can't deal with another round of 'Stanstead' and 'Bear vs Elephant' posts...

So I hear that APCOA no longer own the car parks around the airport and that LLA now has entire control over them. Any ideas if they are going to change anything? Not a lot they can change unless they build another road, can't see this fix they're planning making too much of a difference although it will help...

daz...BAA have no say...STN WILL be sold whether they like it or not...the deal will be done long before S12...as for LTN how much more can they grow? They have virtually no stands free overnight so they will have to rely on inbound operators such as Wizz to significantly grow traffic unless someone wakes up at LBC to allow an agreement that is juicy enough to allow a private investor to actually pump money into the airport for investment to allow for profits over a 20-30 year time-span....don't hold your breath...

I have no idea, the direct quote is actually coming from the airport press office via its face book page.

Luton, you want to hope that BAA find a way to keep a hold of STN because its the only way you will keep growing.
This is just nonsense, BAA is not the only reason STN is becoming what it is. How many endless numbers of European airlines do you think are going to flock to STN to compete with the Ryanair beast thats lurking? Add to that how expensive and time consuming to travel to STN is and LTN's catchment area being vast enough to draw in alot of people who are nowhere near STN.

I don't enjoy the whole "football team" style "we are better" "you are worse" debate but realisticly things are going well for LTN and should get better. With investment in the right places it should continue it's success. STN seems to be facing quite a few issues that have zero relation to LTN or BAA.

Worry more about that 5 star future Emirates A380 hub in "sowfend" (I kid of course).

Mikki I'm sure you speak on behalf of STN airport, It's always good to lose an airline and a route?
