What awful timing for a long weekend in Athens!
Who wants to arrive in Athens at 03.00 (unless you are transferring to Jeddah!)
At least Turkish have day flights both ways to IST.

1st. Athens airport is used to get to other destinations in Greece, Mainly the islands and thessaloniki so it is actually good to arrive at 3.00am for morning flights.
2nd.I don't think this route is aimed at people who want a long weekend.
3rd.Why are you comparing it to Turkish?

I would have thought that 5 years was the maximum period Permission can be left without use and then it expires.

Caveman - These times quoted are they just slot applications? I see that BHX-ATH is just two days a week, (Mon and Sat) is it still confirmed as 747 or is another a/c type to be used?

PS What does ACL mean?

315GBP for the cheapest web return with Hellenic to Athens - not cheap in my opinion but if you do the journey I suppose its better than the trip via LHR? Fingers crossed all works out with this operation, isn't it ironic that in one of the toughest years for the aviation business BHX bags flights to IST, PHL, THR and now ATH & JED, someone in the BHX marketing team is doing something right...... Lets hope the AI rumours are correct too just to finish off with a bang!

Gayfriendly, I do travel regularly from UK to Greece and unless you travel Low Fares (I include Olympic their service can be terrible) remember with the multitude of add-ons this bumps up the "reasonable" headline price. I like to take hold baggage and have an allocated seat then you have to pay at least £290-300 plus. Plus I wont have the added cost of travel to London.

As you say I have been amazed how many new airlines have seen BHX as a viable option in this present climate. As I have previously posted BHX vastly under serves our region and maybe the locos add ons and long car journeys are just too much for cash strapped travelers. Maybe people are now willing to fly from an airport near where they live?

Thanks Daza for the info, when you put it that way then yes Hellenic are offering a good price, I had no idea that others charged that much - then again I can fly to Muscat for not much more and its twice the distance. If the price is as competitive as you say hopefully it will catch on - what worries me is how many travelers to ATH (or indeed other destinations served from BHX) will still fly via LHR or MAN because they are not told or are not made aware of a BHX option. OK, schedule and price are deciding factors, lets hope its promoted properly.

I fly three times a year to/from Muscat and when asking some travel agents in my home town (Kidderminster) for flight times and prices I have to specify BHX otherwise they offer MAN or LHR first even though they are aware that EK serve Brum! Does BHX do much in the way or direct marketing to Travel Agents I wonder?

Is there really that much leakage of pax to MAN? The biggest hinderance for BHX is LHR; when AA stopped the BHX-ORD service, I seem to remember one BHX business passenger who used it quite regularly bemoaning the idea of having to go to LHR when it would be have been as convienient to use MAN-ORD?

As GF says, the biggest problem is that people just accept the fact that they can't fly to wherever from BHX. When given a flight from MAN or LHR they just accept it.
Even a transfer in Paris or Amsterdam is preferable to the trip down to LHR etc.
More publicity would help, from both the airlines and the airport.....

Me too-but the EK connection is awful -arriving in MCT at 03.45 and it is more expensive, generally, than daylight flights changing at BAH with GF.
My ideal ( other than flying out from BHX) would be a day flight without plane change both ways.
Perhaps Oman Air and BA could do code exchange or maybe, as Oman Air are looking to open up new routes with their new A330's thay should look at BHX!

Well, if Hellenic Imperial are really intending to operate the ATH-BHX-ATH sectors with a B747, I have grave doubts that the route will ever be profitable. Consequently, I for one, wouldn't risk parting with my money to advance book with them. I'd be too worried they've already quit the route by the time my departure date comes up, and I wouldn't be too confident that I'd ever see a refund! But, good luck too them! I won't make any excuses if they prove me wrong and are still flying the route (with B747s) two years after they begin service.
