Regarding the Channel Islands
You have probably answered your own question: others have tried & failed. The market for elderly holiday makers may have been there but the new "elderly" want to travel further afield than JER & GCI.
The Channel Islands market is changing & the facts might be that BOH cannot support a regular service with SOU so close at hand. They have the right frequencies & volume so even if a large number of people live closer to BOH than SOU many have become wary that a BOH operation is unlikely to last / offer the frequencies required / offer the fares required.

One factor with the BOH-Channel Islands market is the ferry from Poole (and a lesser extent Weymouth). Not saying that would make a BOH-Channel Islands airlink unviable, but it does provide competition, especially for non time-sensitive leisure travellers

Compare it to SOU and the only ferry compeition is a slower service from Portsmouth

Ryanair cuts 9/10 routes from MAN

Does this mean BOH will also suffer?

Manchester airport regulates how much BOH charges airlines... and if this is the case (which is unbelievably stupid given the different markets and revenue requirements) then BOH will definately suffer

MAN airport management i feel are rather too conservative for an airport like BOH when it comes to LCC's. The new terminal will need Pax in 2010 and that can only come from more competitive pricing

MAG

Err, £45m investment says a good deal about MAG commitment at BOH. Dont' confuse RYR gaming with MAG airport management strategy.

Not to mention that MAN has LPL, LBA and EMA within a reasonable drive, all RYR airports, a new RYR base at LBA makes a difference.

Not so long ago RYR waved 'Bye Bye' to BHX in favour of EMA, it didn't take long for BHX to then re-appear as a new RYR base.

So don't read too much into MAG moves.

And NEVER believe a word of a Ryanair announcement.

Ryanair promised to base additional aircraft if BOH installed a CAT III ILS. ILS installed - where are the extra aircraft?

Seems strange for a company of Ryanair's high esteem and regard for its passengers and client airports to not fulfil a promise it has made.

BOH terminal.

how is construction coming along? will there be a second floor in the new build for either landside or airside access or is it all open floor to roof for natural light? really hope the arrivals hall goes up soon, seems to be taking ages and the winter will surely slow the progress given daylight hours and weather

Who exactly in Ryanair made this 'promise' and where is it documented? Sounds like an urban myth to me. I have been back though all the announcements on the Ryanair website and I can't see anything about a second aircraft. Care to name your sources .. ?

We pledged 5 aircraft at Bournemouth airport and this has been picked up in the press and the airport. It's no secret. But it hinges on not just the economy but whether there is sufficient demand on the routes at BOH

Ryanair have added a second rotation to Tenerife for the winter schedule. The flights now operate:

Friday and Monday. Both departing at 13.15 returning later in the evening.

Lets hope things pick up and that they base a second plane. Really hope they bring in Rome and Venice for summer 2010.

Surely they could work Hahn as a 3 x weekly flight. They had reasonable loads when it was daily a few years back. I know it's all down to yeild, but surely with all the language students and German tourists in the South West it would work. Other German routes should cope with a few rotations a week.

Question

I totally agree, but why just "Hahn" there are several destinations in Germany that could work well in both directions all year round, Berlin, Frankfurt, Munich just to name three, students & tourists alike would use BOH and of course the link for service personel would return, I just don't understand why no one seems to want to touch this region, just keep banging away at the bucket & spade Med routes. Surely there must also be some mileage in routes to Austria, Belgium, Denmark, Norway, Sweden, Switzerland(Zurich) summer & winter, even pushing slightly more east into areas like Latvia etc etc.
One of the Lcc's could carve out a good little trade to some of these destinations surely

Another question for Ryanair

Quote [But it hinges on not just the economy but whether there is sufficient demand on the routes at BOH ]

For a start the economy is fd all over the UK and it hasn't stopped expansion at LBA and EDI

How does Ryanair assess whether there is a demand for a route ?

I always thought they just based Aircraft and then started routes ( some quite bizzarre ) and wait to see what happens.

There must be another reason the based aircraft never showed up, what is it ?

Could it be the same as Manchester, that they just can't get there own way on Landing Fees.

Ryanair

Assuming that Ryanair has quit Manchester because of failure to get a deal with MAG may be a mistake - I know thats what the PR said, but it still more likely to be another story.

If you were running Leeds airport and Ryanair asked you for a special deal, what would you ask for in return?

How about, 'ok Ryanair, you get the deal, but in return, you drop the Manchester and Doncaster routes, to give new Leeds routes a better shot at success through the winter'

Ryanair lose nothing, they gain a new base with a decent deal, and the ability to press both Manchester and Doncaster into a corner in future.

Hard negotiation but good business for Leeds and for Ryanair.

As for based aircraft, Ryanair will always go where they think the money is... why is that a surprise to anyone?

RYR are not alone in changing their minds on routes and bases later, if the market changes. BA change their minds every year in one form or another, there are countless examples of PR announced policy by BA that changes or quietly disappears few months later (look at Open Skies for example).

RYR will base more at BOH I am quite sure, but not before Spring 2010.

Speaking to an employee.

Terminal fit out begins towards the end of the year and it's supposed to be open by April next year.

The arrivals hall hasnt begun construction and at the moment it seems to be 50/50 whether it will go ahead in the immediate future.
