Thomson Airways already operate long-haul, but only 3 or 4 departures each winter for the fly cruise pax. Monarch and Thomas Cook A330's also operate to New York, Barbados and other caribbean destinations for the fly cruise crowd (and short-break shopping trips) of Bath Travel/Kuoni/P&O. In total around 1 flight every fort-night from BOH in the winter months is a long-haul flight. So plenty room for improvement and additional capacity (once the economy kicks back into shape)
Barbados could definitely be operated weekly from BOH - Bath Travel tried back in 2003, but they were doing so with a B747-200 (440 seats) and that proved too much capacity... A330 or B787 would be ideal.

Good news for Bournemouth today is that Thomson and First Choice will continue to operate a based aircraft for next Summer 2010 with the release of there brochures
New for Bournemouth with Thomson is Sharm el Sheikh ( one destination we have been needing for a while now ! ) Corfu , Monastir , Antalya and Bodrum along with the usual destinations we have had on offer before , although Heraklion , Reus and Faro have stopped these routes should still be carried on with Ryanair , Palmair and Olympic
Not sure if they are using the based 737 300 as i dont know if this has the range for Sharm el Sheikh ?
The new departure terminal should have been finished by next summer so a good start here for some new routes and much needed space

adfly - And then you woke up and realised this is 2009....one of the worst years in aviation history!
If established l/h operators are struggling from major hub airports which have a much larger catchment area than BOH as well as regional connecting flights, what basis would they have for even contemplating operating routes from BOH?

...yes but
SouBe makes a good point, but as usual the devil is in the detail.
CAA (and IATA) stats show that while there is certainly mayhem and overcapacity in many areas - the Atlantic is a good example where L/H from the regions is likely to be in for some deep cuts - when you take a look elsewhere, and in particular at at the Gulf routes which feed destinations further afield, you actually see double digit growth still, even from most of the regional airports. Check out Newcastle's stats on the Dubai route for example.
I still think that you will see Emirates in particular strengthen the UK regional presence, in part because their boss Tim Clarke (under Sheikh Ahmed) is a Brit who perhaps understands the UK market a little better than his counterparts in the Gulf .
The down turn will see I'm quite sure a further entrenchment by Emirates, Qatar and Etihad, and I expect shrinkage at BA, SQ, CX and QF amongst others.
EK from Bristol to DXB is not so hard to imagine, BOH not for a while yet, but never say never. The London airports are still highly runway capacity constrained.
As for transatlantic, to quote a certain MOL, a bloodbath is on the cards this winter.

From the airports news section,
Increased capacity and new routes for Summer 2010
Thomson Holidays and First Choice have today announced that they will be increasing capacity from Bournemouth Airport next year. From May 2010 they will be basing a 189-seat Boeing 737-800 aircraft at the airport which has 25% more seats than their existing aircraft.
To coincide with the arrival of this new aircraft, they will be adding five new destinations to their route map: Antalya and Bodrum in Turkey, Corfu, Tunisia and the increasingly popular Egyptian Red Sea resort of Sharm el Sheikh. The flights to Turkey will also provide holiday makers with the opportunity to link up with one of the Thomson ships cruising around the Eastern Mediterranean.
Commenting on this news, Rob Goldsmith, Managing Director of Bournemouth Airport said: “To announce increased capacity and an exciting range of new routes in the current economic climate clearly shows the confidence that Thomson and First Choice have in Bournemouth Airport. Both operators offer holiday makers realistic prices and high standards, and I am confident these new routes will be a great success.”
In addition to the new routes, Thomson and First Choice will also be operating to Malaga, Ibiza, Majorca, Paphos, Rhodes, Dalaman and Tenerife next summer.

Just noticed in the New Routes section on the BOH website that Balkan Holidays are also listed as new for 2010 operating to Bourgas, operating 30th August to the end of September

This really is great news, well done everyone at BOH working hard to get these new services.
This is particularly reassuring as this expansion is coming from the charter side rather than the LCC side (i know Thomson Airways is essentially a LCC but they have reverted to pretty much charter operation at BOH)
Perhaps the next round of good news will be related to FR or U2 increasing their services. I would hope the cancellation of PIK would be temporary and if not that U2 will replace the gap.

This is the current thinking re BOH (but could change dependent on economic recovery)
2nd a/c summer 2010...
BER (3 wkly), BHD (4 wkly), PIK (returns 4 wkly), DUB (back to daily +3 wkly), CIA (4 wkly), AGP (increases + 3 wkly),
Routes under consideration post 2010: Naples, Stockholm, Prague, Salzburg, Malta, Venice, Bergerac, Nantes (returning), Madrid (returning), Cork, Inverness

BER? You mean Berlin? That would be awesome if that was confirmed as happening. Loads of foreign students in Bournemouth from Berlin. Lots of in-bound from that region to Bournemouth and the West Country... should be a success. When will Ryanair confirm this???

adfly - in answer to your question
To answer a question posed earlier - Thomson Airways currently operate long-haul from BOH to Dominican Republic. Two departures this Jan 2010 10th and 24th.
i think regional airports have HUGE potential for long-haul and so does Boeing, hence their belief in the B787 to offer direct flights from regions to regions long-haul rather than the hub approach taken by Airbus. ALTHOUGH JUST HEARD BOEING HAS DELAYED FIRST FLIGHT OF B787 AGAIN, AND QANTAS HAS CANCELLED/DEFERRED SOME DELIVERIES! so maybe not!?
