Red Arrows

Just had a flypast by the Red Arrows, straight through Port Erin Bay, over Ronaldsway, and away. Perhaps it was a "Hello" for the new tower! (Looks like they are on their way home from a show in Newcastle, Northern Ireland.)

I see from another thread that BE s BRS will stop for the winter. Is IOM LPL and MAN continuing with same number of rotations or has EazyJet made to big a hole in the numbers?

BE are currently selling IOM-BRS 3 x weekly right through the winter, so information on 'the other thread' may be questionable. The aircraft also does BRS-JER so suspect the objective is to provide an aircraft for that busier rotation and to keep Manx2 on their toes at GLO.

LPL and MAN frequencies are retained at daily x 4 and daily x 5, except for certain slack dates in January, as is usual.

EZY will only come in 4 x weekly, with no Saturday flights, which doesn't represent a very flexible or attractive option for most travellers, so they will continue to be an irritation to BE rather than a serious competitor.

I dont think anyone expects any of the islands airlines to run what is currently published. EZYs pax have all come from BEs LPL and MAN and Manxy2's BLK so somethings gotta give coz the market sure aint recovering right now. It wont be EZY pulling off though.

BRS is hardly ever even half full and this is peak period and Manxy2 have cut flights to GLO to keep theyre loads up. Usual story of just pass the pax around to different airports but no change in numbers. Its gonnabe a long cold winter on Fraggle.

Aer Arann

What's going on with Aer Arann's LCY operation? So far this week there was a technical problem yesterday causing some delay, and this afternoon's rotation has been cancelled, with delays to this evening's. And it seems to be becoming a more frequent problem. I know the crews work hard to make up time, but the cost of extensions to Ronaldsway hours must be eating into their profits.

The older ATR42s they now use appear to be much less reliable than the ATR72s which launched the service last year, and certainly less reliable than FlyBe's Q400s.

Are they now playing with this route, or are they serious about providing a reliable service?

2 delays and 1 cancellation....I would not call this frequent problems myself. How has Aer Arran's reliability faired up since they started the route?

Dunno that. Comments welcome. My view based on being personally delayed 3 times in two months, my occasional review of the IOM arrivals/departures web page during this period and the clear disruption yesterday and today (2 delays and 1 canx in less than 48 hours). But hopefully not tomorrow, when I go home...

(I'd have thought you'd have appreciated my reference to Q400 reliabilty, Cloud1 !!)

Haha oh I did really!! The Q400 is getting more reliable but lets not jinx it

Although to prove that I am not just on here to fight Flybe's battles, I thought I would comment on dear old Aer Arran. From a passenger perspective then 3 disrupted flights probably does seem excessive but in the grand scheme of things its not. Seriously thought it would be good to know what their overall reliability has been like...

Maybe someone on here has stats which may show a difference when they changed equipment??

Hi,
I was at IOM Ronaldsway today, first time there, and what a fantastic airport with amazingly friendly security staff. I'm not an airline insider but I follow aviation very closely and have an interest in Aer Arann.. so whilst waiting for today's IOM-LTN flight on Flybe I noticed 2 Aer Arann ATR42s, EI-CVR was on the Dublin rotation, after it's departure this morning EI-EHH arrived.

Before my 11:35am flight I noticed that both engines on EI-EHH were being inspected on the stand.. the plane was parked directly in front of G-JECO which is what I flew on.

I have flown with Aer Arann a lot over the past few years and have only picked up minor delays. I do think however, that since the new fleet was moved over to Aer Lingus only ops, that the Aer Arann brand is suffering a bit - this is a laymans point of view.

Remember RE are sending back 1 ATR42 at the end of August. Technical hiccups occur as everyone knows but ontime operations are the basis of a good service. I wouldn't think twice about flying with them because the delays i've hadhave been no worse than FR but one thing bothers me, and thats the LCY route.. that really should be a flagship route with ultra reliable service on a good looking plane! not wishing to pander to the business community too much but they are bread and butter..

Interestingly, and I say this with total honesty, my Flybe flight today was a few mins delayed in boarding and a few mins late push back etc. in departures I overheard a businessman on the phone getting a bit annoyed by it as no announcements were made in the terminal etc. and he could see staff milling about the boarding area.. all in, we made up the time and although it took more time to get out of Luton than i was in the air, I think this reinforced in my mind just how important certain routes are.

I would also be interested to see any stats re ontime flights etc over the period since the aircraft changed from 72 to 42... that include Pax nos...

Just to chip in my two pence worth as a regular IOM-London business traveller. When Aer Arann launched the LCY route with the 72 it was great as LCY is so much more convenient for me personally. Add in a comfortable aircraft, great crew who recognised and looked after regulars and a reliable service and you had a perfect combination. Result? I used their service virtually every trip.

However along comes the Aer Lingus Regional contract. Nice 72 goes and is replaced by a flying trash can of a 42 which even the crew were embarassed about. Reliability goes down (I accept this is from my persepective ie events that happen to me) and service becomes questionable, even after the flying trash can is replaced with a more respectable aircraft. Prices also seem to mysteriously increase. Result? I start to use FlyBe despite LGW's drawbacks.

Current situation? I went back to using Aer Arann to see if anything had improved and unfortunately I have had delays and cancellations and in my personal opinion the service has suffered. So its back to FlyBe for me, and with LGW improving (all be it slowly) under new ownership I'm afraid that for the time being Aer Arann have lost at least one formally loyal and regular customer.

Manxman11 - you've summed it up perfectly.

And just to clarify I'm talking about delays due to technical problems, not weather related.

I hope people from Aer Arann look at these forums as I think ManxMan11's comments taken at face value are a bit worrying.

Personally I have flown on the older ATR 42s a fair amount, they're not pretty that's for sure, but they work hard. Aer Arann does have a good product when all the bits fit together, my last flight with them in June picked up a small delay but the crew were excellent and the flight was fine, albeit they ran out of sandwiches on board

Does anyone know if the RE ATR72 from air contractors has ever been used on the IOM routes? EI-SLM the one with the hideous green livery (not aerlingus) just wondered if that was any more like the factory new aircraft that have been moved to the franchise ops? EI-SLM is a much newer plane.

RE have said that 1 42 is coming out of the fleet at end of august.. according to another site they still have 4 x factory build 72's on order and 1 x 72 due from air contractors.

I've watched the airline industry for a long time and its never nice to see operations with delays. I think RE have a good team and I've only ever experienced courtesy and friendly crew - genuinely. Unlike my first flight with Flybe on 14th August, the cabin crew were as miserable as sin, probaly the worst I've come across on any airline, yet on the return flight yesterday the crew were fantastic, some of the best - with clear audible announcements, flight status updates and very helpful and friendly cabin.

I find it interesting to read the experiences of regular service users. I actually thought on the flight out that if this is typical flybe crew then it sets a bad impression, luckily enough my perceptions have been changed. Hopefully ManxMan11's experiences will change in future too, especially if the service is more convenient (without delays) for him.

Thanks HaC - I'm also referring to tech related delays - weather ones I'm used to!

Bananamanuk - I don't know what RE are up to but on the face of it they have taken a successful route (one of their best an insider once told me) and messed it up.
I'm surprised you found an unfriendly crew as the IOM based crews (and I may be being a bit biased here!) I have always found to be very pleasant but I guess everyone can have their off days.

Seems to me that this time next year Arran brands no longer exist and everything will be AerLingus Regional. 42s are dead meat when the irish PSOs go next year so the 42s will go too and remaining ops will be all 72s aer Lingus branded. Zillion dollar question is where LCY will be in this. Gotto be either a Lingus 72 or nothing....... this is not good news as it was great on the 72s but regulars are now switching back to LGW.

Hello ManxMan11 - I genuinely hope that you see improvements on that route because as you said it was more convenient to you. With regards to the unfriendly flybe crew, it was cabin crew the senior attendant was plainly miserable and hardly welcoming. She almost seemed put out to be doing what she was doing.. like you say everyone can have an off day, but first impressions mean a lot. That said, it's something that can happen on every single airline so nothing against Flybe, like I say the return flight was just fine, very highly rated in my book! (for what that's worth!)

IOMSpotter - you raise an interesting point, but why would Aer Arann continue to invest in their brand now, i.e. sales and marketing etc if they were going to ditch it? Aer Lingus have no financial input into EI Regional. If RE was to just become EI Regional ala CityJet/ Air France, there would be a considerable cost involved in a full rebrand.

It's a shame the loads have fallen. A few thousand more pax per month might have tempted BA Citiflyer to operate one of their E170s on the route if RE pull out. I, like Manxman11, find LCY more convenient for my frequent trips to London. And it would be more attractive for connections to European destinations as well.

Oh well. One can only hope for some improvement.

Happy to use BE, and do so as well. Just hate LGW!

You fellas need to get ont o that Shulz fella who runs Arann and let him know what you think. I've always been told the London route is Aranns moneymaker and they can't afford to let it lose passengers like you lot. Tell him whats what and see if he comes up with any answers, yessir.

Air Contractors (I think) ATR72 back on the route this morning. Better that than the -42s for sure, but not perfect - arm rest torn off seat !0D, back seat pocket fastenings bust etc. Not as good as EI-REO and her siblings which ran the route for the first year of course. Anyone know if it is RE's intention to replace this with a new airframe, or are they waiting to see how the Aer Lingus Regional deal pans out?
