VAT is not charged on airfares.
The discrepancy is likely due to the airline's desire to set a certain headline (total) fare. There are loads of threads on Pprune debating the good and bad practices of airlines in setting their taxes and charges figure.

is looking at all airline taxes and charges in 2009 under pressure from Brussels and will be bringing in new rules. All part of getting back at FR & Mike the mouth really but schemes like BEs are likely to be stopped as its all Mickey Mouse so they can advertise - fly for free.

The BE website shows the FULL cost of selection of a flight on the RHS as soon as you select what you want and complies with the law as required.
The old issue of third party taxes/charges means that it is unfair (unfare)for the airline to be targeted with the full cost of a ticket - these charges should be openly allocated to the recipient.
BA Connect stuck to the old system of just telling you what the total was - they wanted to be seen as completely honest and realised there was no need to separate the charges because the public didn't want to know/ wouldn't be fooled by these antics. They wouldn't book a flight because it was advertised as cheap - they wanted quality.
I have just looked for their website to see what they are doing now but.............. it appears they are not with us any more.
The bottom line is if you want to get on an aeroplane for a return journey to anywhere, you should expect to pay at least £100 return.
Flybe make a profit of about 5-6% of turnover which is not a lot considering their turnover. What it does say though is that what they are charging is about right.

Another point is BE don't advertise £0 fares. The lead fares e.g LPL £27.99 are only taxes and charges precious little if any of that fare goes to BE.
Yes SOU is returning from the end of March. Initially I believe MON/WED/FRI/SAT/SUN and possibly on an IOM based Q400.

flybe "taxes and charges" on GCI-LGW-GCI are £40.10 Vs Aurigny at £23.50. The difference is because flybe include fuel and insurance surcharges to the tune of £8.30 per sector, whilst Aurigny absorbed these into their fares some time ago.
THe only reason I can think why flybe continue with these as "taxes and charges" is to give a lower appearance to their fares when prospective customers search through availabilities.
That said they do show the inclusive prices on the right hand side of the screen.

third party fees and charges should only be separately accounted if the buyer has the option to separately source the service, choose a cheaper option like credit vs debit cards or decline it like checked baggage. Since Joe Punter can't negotiate his own ATC or terminal charge it should be one ticket price end of story.

IOM- JER with FlyBe
I don't think this has been highlighted on here previously (apologies if it has), but I've noticed that for S09, BE are offering IOM-JER (via LTN) three or four days a week. No aircraft change, but obviously a short stay on the ground at LTN.
This seems to be possible because the new LTN-JER route is operated by an IOM aircraft and crew. Fares appear to start at £79 return, which undercuts Blue Islands and Manx2 significantly, but this doesn't seem to be something BE are actively advertising at present.

Was moaning about Aer Arran's miserly 15kg hold baggage allowance a while back (and caught some flack from one of you for saying it....).
Just started booking Jan/Feb travel and discovered FlyBe are not operating my usual 0955 IOM/LGW rotation on the days I wanted to travel.
Had a look at the RE offering, and there, in banner headlines on the booking screen, is the message that RE allow 20kgs of hold baggage in IOM/LCY flights.
