Local paper has caught up with the axing by GSM of SSH - claiming only "200 seats" had been sold. Seems DLM may be selling better though.
Maybe it was just the destination (SSH) that wasn't popular, compared to say the likes of PMI, which has always been down the years a popular haunt for local yokels.
Just sad that again the flying unwashed of NE Fitlikeland have lost a service through lack of use - I criticize BAA (sometimes with justification!) but it can't be easy for them to attract routes/airlines if this happens time & again.

Flying "unwashed"? .... why should anyone support a route just because it is there?
It is called supply and demand .... and there is obviously no demand.
Maybe airlines and BAA should do their homework before jumping in with both feet. For ABZ, SSH is an obscure choice of destination.

RT,
Perhaps GSM should try some winter skiing destinations instead. The only time I went to Egypt,I got food poisoned and contracted bronchitis,at the same time. Never again.
I think that Dalaman will do well.A lot of people go there, and have properties there as well.
I see that KLM are up to 5 a day,and Eastern are starting an Oslo service as well.I thought that the winter schedules would make it a bit quieter, but the last 2 weeks have been the opposite. You're missing this on your blog.
As for helis.Well mental is the word, but we all know they don't count.

Oil price
Well SSH has certainly disappeared in an Egyptian sandstorm.
I wonder with oil prices at ~$54 today, how further they will fall & when will they fall low enough to start affecting both the airport & local economy. Bad enough the non-oil economy in a slump, last thing we need is the main employer slumping also.
It's all cyclical & at some point they will rise again, but when that will be nobody seems to know.
Depends on how "long-term" the thinking is among oil cos. Historically the BPs & Shells have always to my mind been rather short-term, perhaps with good reason. These days, it's Oilexco, Apache, Talisman & the like. Will they take a longer term view? Only time will tell I guess.
One thing that may be different these days is many local cos. & much more global & international in their outlook. Perhaps the view that Aberdeen is a place that worldwide projects can be driven from (due to local knowledge/expertise) may help cushion the blow somewhat. Then again, maybe contracts will be curtailed & deferred.
However it is to me proof that diversification (be it The Thatched one or whoever) is needed & should have been progressed long ago.
Or maybe I am altogether too pessimistic - would be interested to see what you all think. But I see ABZ traffic - BOTH intl & domestic - continues to fall in the month just past, of course we're not alone in that. And not on all routes I guess, but an overall fall nevertheless.

Gsm - Ssh
I did look at the GSM website when this flight was announced, the sector time was almost 9 hours, which must have meant a tech stop somewhere. Perhaps they were trying to do a double stop with EDI.

RT - Apache and Talisman are short term - both have already announced a reduction in drilling activity for next year. They operate on low cost and tight margins and their knees jerk harder than John Sergeant in a Viennese Waltz.
I think talk of a slump is a bit too premature but there will be caution for sure. I think a global recession will bite everyone even ABZ. The cocoon we live in up here will delay the onset but it will reach us.

I am employed by a tier 1 contractor in the Oil & Gas arena, we have prepared (as I am sure have most other companies) a contingency budget for next year on 'just in case' basis, I think there will be some further slowdown in Aberdeen.

One of the people featured in the accompanying Flybe photograph today
I used to work with. Part of the first all "local" Flybe crew on the LGW route.
Has come a long way since then by the looks of it!

Cordyce View NIMBY's
It appears that a member of the Cordyce View NIMBY committee has made a noise complaint about the RAF Herc, bringing in a local Serviceman on a compassionate flight; the guy’s close family member was close to death and was taken immediately to the ARI. So what’s next, babies dying because GAMA need to fly them to Glasgow and they can't because they might wake some f****er up? The airport’s been here since 1935, when did the (7) Cordyce residents buy their houses? Rant over, apologies to no one in Cordyce View.

Well I agree with you.Between 6pm and 8am we have to route Bond helis in and out through E2 to avoid Cordyce. This can cause the Tower controller a lot of extra problems,as Bond don't stop flying at 6pm.The Bond apron is a no go area for other traffic,so E3 is our only other option in and out to the East apron.I'm sure 15 mins of a Herc turning and burning is not too much of a problem at 8.30pm.Probably interupted some soap.Perhaps some people in Cordyce should engage brain before picking up the phone.

Fact: Two out of the three final contenders withdrew and Eastern awarded by default. Anyhow, they are being informed that the turbo-prop is more modern, quieter and will be far more comfortable and the 146. That's reassuring.
Who were the other two?

No, the original FLT contract was due to run until June 2010. The contract awarded to Eastern is just an interim contract to cover the period from Feb 2009 - June 2010.
