Not heard anything myself. If they do have plans to extend the runway do they have any plans to develop the terminal? I can just see a 767 arriving and 200+ passengers fighting for their bags on the carousel. From my experience of ABZ it seems to be just about coping but with bigger aircraft it will be chaos.

Hi chaps.

Sorry got my dates mixed re any decision on the (possible) runway ext in my previous.

I recall Britannia 767s (-200) operating Aberdeen to Florida & San Juan - or was it Puerto Plata - many years ago...must have been about 10yrs ago now? Was "week about" over the summer. Where did they stop outbound en route? Around same time as 757s of Air Transat to/from Toronto. Ah memories...will we ever see their like again?

I thought the original plan to extend the runway was more geared towards appeasing Ryanair, who said they could expand from Aberdeen into Europe, but not with current runway length. At least that's what the spin from Ryanair suggested! Mind you with the current economic conditons I would doubt a 189-seat aircraft could be viable for any route out of ABZ just now.

Flybe/Loganair to CWL aside, any current news of expansion? I had heard VLM (LCY or RTM) as well as Flybe (MAN). As ever, slots don't equal flights! What about bmi R - anything over & above taking over the BHX & LHR services? Or is it all slim pickings.

Not forgetting the Air Transat A310s which were used on the Toronto flights. I'm pretty sure these stopped at MAN outbound.

Plane Stupid strike

Seems they were up 2wks ago when at least one of them was interviewed. They must have been "casing the joint" because seems about 10 of them have broken through the perimeter fence & are currently dispruting operations at the airport, although it is not closed.

2 on the terminal roof, rest on a taxiway.

Seems Trump & the increase potentially in GA on the back of this is the focus of their demo.

These idiots should go and get a job.

I hate paying taxes for a nation of feckin' layabouts.

About time we electrify all airport perimeter fencing, and adopt a "Shoot at Sight Rule".

So they break in, make a compound and scale the roof yet I can't take contact lens fluid without a full scale alert. Oops I have a BAA pass.

Guess we won't see any of this kind of stuff when we get ID cards, that's going to fix everything right?

Some day a protester is going to meet a propellor. Maybee the security balance needs to be corrected. The development outside the terminal cost hundreds of thousands for some bollards and s on yet it seems that anyone can just jump the fence!

Honestly you really really have to laugh/count to 10.

The Police should have used the Gene Hunt/ Reagan and Carter method of policing to deal with these morons straight away. If this had happened abroad, would the Police in Italy,France or Spain have adopted this softly softly style to deal with them...i doubt it!

exlatccatsa,
I believe the south coast travel agent in question (I assume you mean Bath Travel) is offering cruises with flights from EXT and BOH. Maybe bookings are thin, and they think that can fill the seats with "rich Aberdonians".

NewScot,
Interesting news about the runway extension: where did you hear that? I only ask because I know that the decision was due last Friday but BAA hasn't made a public announcement either way yet.

Yet to meet a rich Aberdonian, plenty stingy ones though, as befits the stereotype!

Don't they know there's a Credit Crunch on?

Noticed the BBC had a picture of the soapdodgers cutting the fence, they are quick to publicize their actions, I'll give them that.

But all they did was inconvenience thousands of people - err, OK make that hundreds...

I can only presume the flights will be ABZ-BOH or EXT to pick up a few more pax and fuel with the inbound to ABZ from the cruise port.
Perhaps they won't require the extension for a low fuel arrival and departure?
I heard today the extension go ahead was agreed if the funding could be found.
So we're none the wiser then.

If the funding could be found...

...sounds a bit ominous! I thought they had set aside funding, or was that for other things like terminal development + runway resurfacing.

Take it there will no "Whisky 6" & that backtracks will be required...IF it goes ahead.

Angry What do 'Plane Stupid' think they are achieving by protesting on the ABZ runway?

Yesterday 9 members of the environmental group 'Plane Stupid' cut their way through the fence at Aberdeen Airport and staged a protest on the runway.

Apart from causing disruption at ABZ for the day, what do they think they are achieving?

Maybe they own shares in a fencing company?

You watch, all airports to be double fenced and moated , bit like the fiasco in not being able to be dropped off in the 'drop off zone' anymore following on from the Glasgow attack.

Im off to buy a JCB and some fence posts

I also noticed the protest prevented the Air Ambulance BE200 from getting airborne. I'm sure the great unwashed are incredibly proud of that fact. Idiots.
