I understood it to be nightstopping. Hopefully the pax will get hotels - there are a couple around the airport recently opened in fact.
I always thought of Rovaneimi, Kittila, Enontekio etc to be Santa-related especially at this time of year, but I guess you could ski around there as well!
Question is - which one houses the REAL Santa??

Heli support flights secured for Wick
BBC News - 'Dip' in Highlands and Islands Airports' passenger numbers
'Hial also reported that Wick John O'Groats had secured a contract to provide a base for helicopters serving the North Sea oil and gas industry.'
Presumably more fixed wing charters ABZ/WIC/ABZ to link up with the helis, which Loganair had been doing this year.
Wonder what fields offshore are going to be served from Wick, new or existing.

Good News Continues
I see SAS have had another look at ABZ-OSL and have decided to increase the frequency from 3x weekly to 6x weekly with rotations on Tue, Thu & Sun now added to the schedule. Still operated by a mix of 737-600, 700, 800.
I expect bmi Regional will be scared now which is a pity since they've made a reasonable start to the route.

Richard, I think that HIAL talking about WIC and Heli contracts is the one that has just finished with Chevron. Haven't heard of any more contracts though they are trying to secure more

Good Year for Aberdeen airport
So a good 12 months for Aberdeen, I'm sure December will fingers crossed show growth again.
But new routes announced for Riga, Corfu, Dalaman, Oslo, kristinsand, Malaga, Barcelona, Bristol
Increase in charter destinations and flights for summer 2014
Increase in capacity for Frankfurt, Heathrow, Dublin, Belfast, Manchester, Birmingham, Norwich, London City, sumburgh
Increase in helo movements and all types now fully flying after some well known incidents
Finally some sort of money been spent on the terminal, even if it is only window dressing the problems,
A potential new owner, fingers crossed for gip to take over and put some real investment into the airport.
So 2014 looks like a busier and bigger year and hoping for a full year of helicopter flying and good weather

Yes ABA, a potentially interesting year ahead.
My main hope for the airport is that the HAH Board do agree in Q1 2014 to sell the airport given the apparent level of interest. Out of the three (ABZ, GLA, SOU) it is thought we are the ones with potential best value.
It's way back deep in the thread, but I always go back to the post that showed BAA historically put back very little that it took out of ABZ, thus we were starved of investment over many years. Things that are being done now perhaps should have been several years ago, & even now they are reacting to events, not being proactive as perhaps they should have been when it comes to the infra.
Why only part of the runway extension? More (especially international) stands? More remote aircraft parking? Why - despite being told again & again - only one baggage carousel? Only now are they aware they needed to expand the facilities?
Right now the airport is - being generous - barely adequate for current & forecast levels. At worst, it is breaking at the seams. Will the cosmetics being planned now really make a difference?
It seems to be GIP v Ferrovial v one or two others if HAH sell.
Having seen what they have done vis a vis Edinburgh, I ,like ABA, would prefer GIP, but that's just personal preference. I am not particularly enamoured with Ferrovial & the debt taken on board when they took an interest in BAA.
I'm not expecting an Edinburgh-style explosion of airlines & routes here, but I DO think GIP if it was them would have a more pro-active approach on the face of it.
BAA/HAH were forever saying they continued to talk to airlines - perhaps a change of owner will help persuade airlines that the strength of the local economy is worth investing in - & that they would no longer be talking to BAA/HAH.
Not every route will or does work of course, but that applies up & down to all airports in the UK throughout the midst of time. Routes come, are tried, & some go. But you'd like to think that being lucky enough to be in a continually strong area for industry would count for something.
Anyway - whoever acquires it if indeed it is up for acquiral - I hope some aggressive investment & route development follow. Sadly, at the moment, I get the impression of the MD sitting in her office hamstrung by being owned by the remnants of the BAA - but continuing 'to talk to airline partners'. It's a well-worn phrase now - too much talk but not enough action, perhaps.
And of course - if they sell, how LONG would it take to actually divest the airport from HAH ownership, especially if there is a bidding war?
We shall see.

S14 Seasonal as it stands
The schedule seems fairly similar to last year with a few changes.
Bourgas - 1x weekly
Barcelona - Dropped
Corfu - 1x weekly
Dalaman - 3x weekly
Ibiza - 1x weekly (increased from May-Oct compared to Jun only in 2013)
Menorca - 1x weekly
Malaga - 1x weekly
Palma - 4x weekly (Seems that MT have dropped PMI with BY & Barrhead taking up the slack)
Reus - 1x weekly
Tenerife - 1x weekly
There is also the charters to Enfidha and various Italian airports
A rather incomplete timetable is available on the airport website which will be updated as time goes on.

Perhaps it's easier to fill seats on PMI - especially with MT appearing to be giving up the route.
BCN was appearing a little too often for my liking on the ABZ Facebook page advertising last minute breaks.

Abz stand problems
Probably a well known fact is that Aberdeen does not have enough stands, especially when it comes to international stands.
So at the moment there are 11 scheduled destinations that are international plus during the summer 6-7 months you can add another 11.
So going by the summer schedules released by airlines so far including air Baltic, SAS (Oslo) bmi regional (2xoslo) it's currently showing that there are 5 early morning international departures between 6-6.40, 6 international arrivals between 8.40 and 9.05 and also between 18.15 and 18.40.
I'm struggling to figure out how 6 aircraft fit onto 4 stands, also during summer and I'm yet to confirm departure and arrival times but on a Friday you have 4 international charter flights and 2 on a Monday, hopefully none of these are scheduled for peak times at Aberdeen as I'm not too sure 7 or 8 aircraft will be able to fit onto stands 1-4, also charter flight tend not to have quick turn around times and are generally on stand for at least an hour.
Surely a case for Aberdeen to increase the number of stands, especially when passengers are demanding more international destinations both charter and scheduled.

With the CAA stepping in to 'cap' Heathrow's intended increase in charges, could this have any ramifications for any possible sale of the non-London assets of HAH?
HAH will likely appeal the CAA action, but may cause a rethink in plans for LHR.
In turn, could that slow down any potential sale of ABZ & the others with less incentive to try to develop LHR? Or with less revenue than expected if the CAA cap is confirmed, could conversely they decide to speed up the sales so that they get in revenue in from the sale of non-LHR assets?
