Of course, the airport management know all this fine well. But they need to be seen to be doing something, hence the periodic surveys about destinations that never come to fruition, that they 'continue to talk to their airliner partners', that they have more destinations than ever before, that the runway extension has proved its worth.
Yup, AIA may have its own brand, but we all still know who runs it.

Interesting article in todays P&J regarding yesterdays BACF flight to Barcelona. Scheduled to take off at 0630 but was delayed until 0930 as crew refused to fly the aircraft due to being kept up all night by a party in an airport hotel. Would it have been the Marriott? Ground staff claimed it was due to 'operational reasons,' but the crew were supposed to be telling the real reason to passengers onboard the aircraft.

The runway extension was only 124m so I can't believe anyone was naive enough to believe 777's were suddenly going to be touching down from Florida.
AIA have stated themselves that the 124m was designed to allow aircraft such as tonight's Freebird A320 to operate direct to DLM, TFS etc, full.
You could only get a 757 direct to these types before so it is serving its purpose I would say.

Who knows any news on the Abz London city routes???
Seems to of dropped the first flight of the morning and are now only flying 2 return journeys a day instead of the normal 3,
Anyone else notice this recent change?

LCY seems to be doing all right at the moment. The middle of the day rotation seems to be a little weak throughout the week except Fridays it seems.
The Friday morning night stopper was dropped to accommodate the Thomas Cook Reus flight which uses the BA E190 that comes up Thursday nights. Apart from that the schedule is unchanged.
So thankfully the Friday night stopper hasn't been dropped due to poor performance and it returns for W13.

I believe a BMI A319 was used up to 2011. BMI ended all charter work after that so last year TCX used their own A320 which was probably a bit big but necessary since they weren't given much notice by BD.
So this year of course they are operating the BA E190 - probably a bit small and have halved the capacity.
TOM and TCX often contract out their flying from non base airports it seems which is why we've got the likes of Freebird, Albastar, Travel Service, Air Europa etc operating instead of their own metal.

Growth at Aberdeen
Good to see the latest figures out showing growth in all 3 areas, especially the helicopters, and over 300k in may is a good improvement, now hopefully the upward trend continues although some more routes would be better
movements up
Almost 2500 movements last week.. that's encouraging but how many are HUMS flights that weren't required last year?

New owner for Edinburgh and surprise surprise a huge increase in passengers/routes and aircraft movements, maybe Aberdeen will be lucky as well and be sold by baa or whoever they call themselves now.

I think they'd die in the ditch to keep ABZ - all those Business class passengers, the long term security of all the helo flights (they aren't going anywhere else now) and little competition from rail
and they get away with absolute minimum investment as well

Oh well fingers crossed for a new owner and some proper investment, not enjoying driving to Glasgow for summer holidays with the kids or constantly waiting for bags and been stuck in queues after returning from London many times a week

remember when BA used to deliberately leave bags of flights from LHR until the last flight of the day because of weight issues? Regular travelers used to keep a stock of semi-finished baggage claim forms ready - and taxi drivers loved it - they provided a guaranteed delivery service all over the NE

Long Haul
Does anybody think Aberdeen will eventually get scheduled long haul flights? They currently do charter flights to destinations of about 5 hrs flying, but perhaps something to the USA??
Also with Aberdeen's growth rate as a city and as a region should increase the catchment amount of pax hopefully within the next 3-5 years

No - the only one that might be attractive (because of the high fares that could be charged) is probably Houston but that is 4600+ miles or 7500 kms which really means a wide body
A 787-9 would do it nicely but you'd have 280 seats to fill - maybe at 50% load factors given the prices you could charge the oil field trash.
but off a 6400 ft runway................... not so likely.....

Didn't bmi Regional serve Kristiansund for a while back in 2007 or was it City Star?
Interesting timings on the Tuesday with an 8 hour layover in KSU.
They say they are looking at further opportunities to serve O&G industry - wonder where else. Dan Helder have publicly spoken about wanting an ABZ route. Can't think of many places that warrant a scheduled route.

Problem with scheduled compared to charter is the flt loads don't warrant anything more than something that flies 20 pax about 600nm max.
So bmi must be getting the aircraft chartered to perform the route as doing it as a schedule would not be making money

From my somewhat hazy memory, KristianSUND was served by City Star indirectly via Stavanger.
bmiR served KristianSAND (Kjevik) directly - but lasted only a few months.
Where else? Any more Norwegian routes? Oslo is the obvious one, but there have been services over the years to:
Alesund
Haugesund
Bronnoysund
Bodo
Trondheim (as flown by Loganair on a charter(?) just last week).
Could any of these be resurrected? Would they fit the bmi model if they are after niche routes? Or would these be just another 'Gronigen'?
They don't make aircraft small enough for some of Aberdeen's niche routes these days!
